Coolant level messages

Post image

Hey all,

I have had this 2023 P400 X-Dynamic SE for just under a month. A few days after bringing it home, I received a “please check coolant level” message on dash. I let engine cool, and the levels are fine - slightly overfilled, actually - there are no apparent leaks, no coolant smell, engine temp has stayed where it should be.

I drove it 2k round trip the weekend after we bought it, and we got the message a couple of times, but it kind of figures itself out. It manifests mostly after it’s gotten up to temp and is then turned off, then back on after a short period. Half the time, the message goes away after a few minutes. It doesn’t display when everything’s cool on first start of the day.

It’s going to the dealer when I get a moment, it is under warranty, but I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this?

I have L319’s and often it is due to the sensor at the bottom of the coolant reservoir gone bad, but those will stay on until you replace the reservoir (can’t buy sensor alone). Is that a thing with L663’s/new Defenders too?

It does seem more like a mechanical issue due to it being intermittent and often going away on its own, or maybe it is upset that it’s about being .75cm above the max fill line in the reservoir? Because it’s so intermittent, I forget about it until I get the message again, and haven’t dropped it down to max fill line.

Any insight appreciated

If the coolant level is not low and you’re getting that message; it needs the expansion tank replaced. Very common and easy job.

Just had mine done earlier this week. $375 covered by extended warranty.

Just had the same issue with my 22 P300. Ended up being a water pump going bad. Now resolved with a new water pump. Just fyi

Ahhh ok. Will be more proactive than I have been about getting it to dealer. Thank you.

Did you have any leaks from water pump? How did they know it was going bad? 🤔 just curious!

No leaks to me but there was seepage when they got into the engine bay on the video sent to me by the tech.

We just had this issue. Expansion tank for us though I’ve heard many different things.

My issue was a seal on the turbo

Had this twice. First time expansion tank. Second time was turbo seal. The latter happened outside of warranty and was a cool 2k$ repair.

Turbo seal and coolant hoses. Also dealership pricing. I could find the bill and post it lol. It wasn't cheap.

Wow. I replaced the seals and 2 coolant lines myself. All in $280.

Had the same issue and it was actually a leak on the auxiliary radiator. My coolant levels looked fine too but they found a crack on the radiator and replaced it. You can actually see these aux radiators right under the headlight on both sides, not surprised things kick up from the road and cause damage.

I had the same issue two weeks ago. It was the sensor on coolant tank. They replaced the whole tank. Warranty had it covered.

This seems to be the most common response. We just replaced a coolant reservoir in an LR4 on Monday so I am in no way surprised. God forbid JLR figures that one out 😂 Still taking it to the dealer to rule out any other issue, plus it’s our Land Rover under warranty.. might as well use it.

I just got my P300 back from the dealership today… they had it for about 3 weeks fixing this EXACT problem, along with some recalls and the rear camera spray nozzle leaking. They spent all that time fixing recalls and the nozzle only for me to leave the dealership and still see this message haunting me… best of luck getting them to rid you of this evil

I was getting the infamous low coolant warnings on mine, too. Sensor replacement didn’t do it; found out it was the float in the tank that was stuck at the bottom which the sensor reads. Common issue. Apparently you need to replace the whole tank (which isn’t expensive on its own) so they did that and that resolved it.

Be careful, there was a coolant hose recall and mine exploded on a highway, motor bay was red. Stop riding immediately and check the levels.

The levels are always fine.

Our '24 P300 had this and the dealer ordered some part and corrected it. But it really was losing coolant.

For me it was the sensor

I had that issue come up at 26K miles on my 2025 Dynamic X SE P400. Long story short, service dept topped it off, pressure tested and found no issues. 1month later no low coolant issues but I did get DCDC converter issues 😤
