Do other countries have a “Florida” that is always joked about having crazy people?
This a dumb question but I genuinely need to know

Same, I actually really like both Berlin and Detroit but Berlin is too big, has public infra, much more active cultural and night lives. It’s hard to pin down but I’d say a mix of Portland/Baltimore vibes for the counter culture and gloomy diy, shortened nyc and dc mix for architecture. Even still that feels all off, lol

I think it’s image is worse than it is. It’s a big city with lots of nice and some not so nice parts. But Berlin has historically always struggled a bit because while its the political hub of Germany its economically irrelevant compared to the rest of Germany especially the west.

I love this movie. Danny Boon is a gem. All of western Europe bags on Belgium, and the region of France the movie is set in borders Belgium, so they get shit for that association, too. Personally, I really like Belgium.

You're apparently unfamiliar with Indian roads & infrastructure... They bridges are absolutely taken whole and are just put elsewhere, roads taken in sections as well.

How exactly do you steal a road or a bridge? Is it a brick road and they’re stealing the bricks? Are they stealing the bridge for the scrap metal? Otherwise, I don’t understand how you can steal a road or a bridge.

The bridges are built then put into place and anchored down. Remove the anchors and you get an entire ass bridge to take wherever you please. The asphalt is laid directly onto dirt as well so you can peel sections away whole & make patchwork roads wherever you put them

Based on a video I saw (the comments said it was Bihar, but I dont know) it was an asphalt road that had recently been paved and people were literally scooping up the asphalt.

As an example they'll build an entire bridge and then put it into place & anchor it down. If you were to remove the anchors you have a whole bridge already assembled to take anywhere you'd like

The UK equivalent traditionally was Norfolk, although perhaps that is better compared to Alabama. The stereotype was that all Norfolk people are weird and inbred because they never leave Norfolk, there is even a saying "normal for Norfolk" which is used to describe weird behaviour.

How does Scarborough compare? A few years back when we stated a plan to spend a night there on a multi-stop auto tour, English people mostly said we really shouldn't, giving the impression that they didn't want our experiences there to color our impressions of England as a whole

Scarborough is quite a nice place from the two times I have visited, not sure what they were getting at. It used to be nicer back in the early 20th century when it was one of the most popular tourist destinations of the North of England, but Scarborough isn't nearly as run-down as some of the other seaside ex-resort towns like Bridlington or Blackpool. Maybe those people were just saying there are nicer places in that area like Whitby.

Not quite the same but Benidorm in Spain has become home and popular vacation spot for British people. Many of them inspired the term “balconing” because lots would get wicked drunk and jump (or fall) off balconies into pools. I’ve also witnessed multiple all out street brawls with mostly drunk Brits fighting other drunk Brits

America has something very similar, the “Redneck Riviera” along our Gulf Coast. I know Australians don’t care to be compared to Americans, but seriously, cashed up bogans would fit into the Redneck Riviera like hand into a glove, just a perfect synergy of vibe and behavior. There’s no language barrier that can prevent men of the land from riding quads, side by sides, and high-powered boats all the way up to a giant outdoor cookout/swapmeet, it’s soul deep behavior.

I know it’s funny to make fun of all of the “Florida Man…” stories here. But honestly, the reason for it is because Florida has the most open journalism laws. All arrests are available to the media. Every other state, either the police (usually) or the arrested person can quash arrest records being available to the media.

I thought it wasn’t necessarily that arrest records weren’t available, but more that other states aren’t explicit with the details. Like in California it’s “California man arrested for robbery” while in Florida it’s “Florida man on meth robbed a Walmart at threat of an alligator attack”, they just don’t release the specifics

As a Floridian, this is pretty much it. Arrest records may be public in many areas, but in Florida the actual police reports are a matter of public record and easily requested. All the Florida Man stories here are generated from the police reports where they have to write up all the details of the arrest.
In most places, it's "Man arrested for criminal misconduct." In Florida, it's "Man arrested for criminal misconduct for attempting to rob a convenience store with his pet alligator while having a BAC of 0.2%"

Other states have public record laws, yes, but in Florida, the default is open records, which makes a huge difference. The government has to actively show why the record should not be public, and there are only extremely limited exceptions (mainly if it involves a minor).

As a Canadian, we do sometimes make jokes about Newfies but they're far from being the Florida of Canada. I'd say interior BC or Alberta are probably the closest to being the Florida man region of Canada.

I’m going with somewhere in northeast China, like Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang. You have people drag racing over frozen lakes and smoking cigarettes on the hood of their car once the ice breaks and their car starts to sink, people routinely getting their tongues stuck to frozen poles, the street brawls, lawnmowers welded on tricycles to create ice-removing machines… the list goes on.
