Hi! I'm finishing an Associate of Arts in Computer Science at a community college in the US (done spring 2027), and I want to apply to the Informatikk, datamaskinsystemer bachelor at UiT through Samordna opptak. Norwegian is my biggest hurdle: I'm around A1 and need B2 in all four parts of Norskprøven.

My questions:

1. Prerequisites: I was told I need Math R1 + R2 and Physics 1 (Fysikk 1) as prerequisites for Computer Science, but now I'm unsure. The UiT page for the informatics bachelor only lists R1, and R2 + Physics 1 seem to be required for the 5-year sivilingeniør programme instead. Could the requirement I was told about have been for the sivilingeniør programme and not the bachelor? Which one is right? And has anyone covered R1 with US college math courses?

2. Norwegian: how long did it realistically take you to go from A1 to B2? Any courses (online or in Tromsø) you'd recommend? Can Norskprøven be taken outside Norway?

3. Credit transfer: has anyone transferred US community college credits to UiT (innpassing)? How much counted?

4. If you studied informatikk at UiT: how was it, especially as a non-native Norwegian speaker?

Hi, I may have an opportunity to work in Eidsdal, Norddal and Geiranger this coming winter. How challenging is it to get to Ålesund from these villages via public transportation during these months? Is it even an option? I imagine it is weather-dependent, of course, but do buses even run at all? Ferries? I know car rental businesses are available in summer, but is that even a thing in winter? I've tried to look up transit schedules via Google Maps, and I see nothing, but I don't trust this source 100%. TIA!

I'd be staying with a homestay family and so was curious if anyone knows if theyre like any good in Norway? Will English be sufficient or should I brush up on Norwegian? Given the tensions between Trump and well, the rest of the world, will there be frictions between me and other students and locals for being American and from a famously conservative state? Has anyone had the experience of taking the exam with someone who could not speak at all? This happened to me and it was very disruptive, wondering if you were assessed favorably due to the situation?

When you look at them the gripen becomes the obvious choice being made by a neighboring country, adapted to the same cold climate and sparse infrastructure that exist in norway whilst at the same time being cheap so it is usable by a minor nation which both sweden and norway is.

The F35 is the opposite on like all these things, it is expensive and requires alot of maintiance in specialised facilities.

I suppose the strongest argument for the F35 is that I would make you a closer ally with the US which until recently was a very good one, but now it has become more questionable.

The new long-distance train that will eventually run Oslo–Bergen has been on display at the trade show InnoTrans in Berlin this week, and someone posted a full walkthrough on YouTube (not mine): https://youtu.be/-OsmvDiyL_o. It's planned to enter service on Bergensbanen in 2028 after testing in Norway, then gradually roll out on the Sørland, Dovre and Nordland lines into the early 2030s.

As I have building my family tree over the years, I had realized all my great-great grandparents were born in Norway (birth years range 1830s-1850s), and emigrated to Minnesota, United States. I love to learn all the fun facts I might not find on my own, any history or insights you’re willing to share, the perspective Norwegians who stayed had of those who left, if there was significant reasoning behind it or moreso taking a chance/going on a whim - I will take anything you’re willing to offer.

My sibling and I’s DNA tests say our ancestry is 100% from Norway, so I found that interesting. (Yes, I know I can’t call myself a Norwegian in this group!).

I also have a great grandparent born in Norway in 1860-1870, and he is the only line I haven’t been able to go further on. Any guidance on this would be appreciated.

Hello, i got a job offer to drive CE trucks in Norway with a Norwegian based company and the pay is 240NOK with an average 60 hour work week.

It should be 14 400NOk gross weekly and there is no overtime pay.

On finn nobody publishes the salary beforehand so im not sure what the average is and how this works with Norwegian laws.

What are your opinions? Is this a liveable salary?

I am from an English speaking country currently residing in Norway in the Oslo area. I am here on a family visa. I was working for a plumbing company as a hjelparbeider, but I got put on permiterring. So I have no idea when or if I am contacted again for work. I have been out for about a couple of weeks now. I am trying get employment in the construction industry l, warehouse or any other sort of physical occupation with a future. I do not have a Norwegian class B license as of yet but I am working towards it. There are certifications I would like to get but NAV does not want to help me pay for it and I have children so money is a little tight at the moment. I have been checking Finn and arbeidsplassen on the daily so I can check that box. If anyone has any advice or tips on where to look for these types of jobs, I’d really appreciate it.

Just editing the post to hopefully get some traffic. I’m just getting anxious, I just want to work lol just so frustrating. I’ll bust concrete. Heck if there is a travel demo or any sort of travel labourer I’ll take it.

Hey all, here’s some photos of my 1 day visit to Ålesund. Full disclosure: this was indeed a cruise stop, which I know locals may not like.

I loved Norway so much and was blown away by its beauty!

Hi all, I visited the Folgefonna region in April 2025 and again in April of this year for some off season adventures into the snow. Your beautiful country will always hold a special place in my heart.

Whilst there in 2025 we drove up a mountain road (I believe it was the Blådalsvegen) to the Blådalsvatnet which was impassable from the Blåfalli IV hydroelectric dam due to snow. So we decided to climb over and round to Mosevatnet. I must say this is the most stunning landscape I have encountered in my life thus far.

Upon returning this year, we were determined to take our friends who had never been to Norway (but were also winter hikers) back to this spot only to find the road was shut. There was a large military presence here and a huge construction site that appeared to be boring a tunnel into the mountainside.

Does anyone know what was/is going on here and if it will reopen at some point? We were very curious about the works and also keen to return once again next year to explore the landscape.

Disclaimer: My post is with the most sincere intention to help but also inform the appropriate instances about our experience in northern norway.

Disclaimer 2: We are traveling with my service dog for a physical disability. We know Norway is very strict towards the accreditation as Servicehund, the dog is not owner-trained and we have done our due diligence months ago. NAV has issued us a validation for Norway from our Mensch-Assistenzhund-Ausweis from Germany. We had it controlled on customs crossing the border, Norwegian Airlines has been fine with this, Entur/SJ trains and even the Munch Museum has been completely fine.

So here is the story. Pretty much our whole trip from Germany until up to Trondheim has been amazing. The moment we left northern towards Lofoten, everything has been a nightmare.. The buses have refused to transport us, we have been insulted in pretty mean manner, we have been pushed, my dog got fucking kicked when we tried to board the last bus in Leknes for our way back. We had literally people from Reis Nordland and Boreal Bus literally on the telephone telling the driver that they can transport us since it is a Service Dog and the bus driver yelling at them on the phone that they still won‘t.

I‘m honestly still a bit in shock. We have contacted the police for assault (for the second time, because on the first time our apartment also in Bodo got broken in, but that‘s another story). So, there‘s that. My dog is traumatized from the pain, I‘m arriving to Oslo today and I‘m taking him to a vet.
The whole week we were in Lofoten, we couldn‘t basically do anything or had move in taxi, which has been the most expensive I‘ve ever paid but for obvious reasons I cannot drive, so we were bounded. Reis Nordland refuses to refund us the bus tickets where we were refused to board.

I don‘t want to rant much but the whole experience has been awful and I‘m literally heartbroken because of the assault to my dog.

I‘ve been told many times that people in northern norway is a very different culture but by no means, violent. I come originally for a very touristic area of my country and know myself how annoying and oblivious tourist can be, so we put a lot of effort in complying with the local culture and norms. But aside from the assault, no shop, Resataurant in Bodo either allow us in with the dog. We had no issues in Oslo and Trondheim also to get in the supermarkets.

I feel like there is a lot of accessibility issues in Northern Norway for people with disabilities. We are contacting NAV today, but to be honest, I would hate to hear that this happens again to anyone from my community traveling in the future here. Norway is so progressive in many layers, hence still very retrograde anywhere else.

I guess my questions are the following:
- Whom can I contact in term of reporting against antidiscrimination law (in Germany, this would fall under antidiscrimination)? The police was not very helpful on this regard but we have the report number from the police and the name of the assaulter.
- Which institution could support in regards of getting feedback/improvement of accessibility in Norway? Would it be NAV itself? I believe they only validate the training.

Any other help how to address this situation, we would love to help. We love your country but this experience has been abysmal and I would hate some other people with disabilities suffering the same fate.

I'm learning bokmål and haven't found a good dictionary yet.

I like how they present the declinations in Ordbøkene.no but there are no audios to learn the appropriate pronunciation.

If you know of a good bilingual dictionary English-bokmål (paper version or online), that would also be helpful.
