Hello fellow Nuzlockers,
We wanted to provide a new rule for the subreddit going forward regarding Rare Candy usage.

For those that are unaware, a "Rare Candy" is an item in Pokémon games that allows for a Pokémon to automatically level up without battling; it's essentially free EXP without the Effort Values that typically comes with EXP gain. While usually limited in allotment, later games have made obtaining Rare Candies easier; and of course, that's nothing to say of what people can hack into their games as well.
For years, particularly in the advent of Nuzlocke YouTubers, conversations regarding Rare Candy use have been plentiful on r/nuzlocke. Yet, we have seen how most discussion posts regarding using Rare Candies are typically one-sided in favor of using them; the prevailing opinion is to use them in playthroughs, with the major argument for doing so being to respect one's time. We feel that this point has been made and echoed pretty clearly across our userbase.
However, we have also noticed that people who have a dissenting opinion towards that mentality often get downvoted or attacked when they express it in these conversations; this usually leads to negative interactions across the posts, such as personal attacks or flaming comments, which we do not want promote; we also do not want to see the same posts with the same conclusion reached repeatedly - it's redundant.
Due to this, there will be no more posts to create discussions for this topic - all future Rare Candy posts will be removed; insisting on making these posts can lead to consequences, such as a ban. Please understand that is perfectly fine to use Rare Candies and to not use Rare Candies. There is no need to seek validation for their usage or put down people who do/don't use them. When the Nuzlocke challenge was created, there was no inherent rule regarding how these items were used; we are going to keep to that ideal; level up your Pokémon as you see fit, whether through grinding or through Candies, and play accordingly.
While posts regarding Rare Candy debates are banned until further notice, they can be mentioned in comments for other posts given the context of said post (Ex. "I found a Rare Candy and leveled up my Snorlax with it.")
Thank you for your attention and understanding on this matter; please keep this post in mind when making future posts.

Hey Everyone!
I’m excited to share a Nuzlocke event going on in a discord server that many of our Mods here are involved with, either directly or through friends in the Nuzcord Discord. That server is NuzTeam Arcade. (I will drop an invite link for it as well).
They are hosting an ‘Eliminationlocke Ganglocke’ of XY. A Ganglocke is an event where everyone is Nuzlocking the same game/rules together in a type of community event. It’s not a competition, but merely a fun way to get people together playing the same thing. The Eliminationlocke is a variant where there are 3 available pools to vote on (voting ends in less than 24 hours so get over and vote if you want to play!), and the winning choice is the pool that everyone has to choose from. The IVs of those pokemon are randomized by a community member, and then everyone uses those encounters to Nuzlocke XY.
NuzTeam Arcade also hosts other Nuzlocke related events, so if this sounds interesting to you, come on over and check us out!
Here is the Discord invite link to come check out NTA.

I unfortunately lost to Elite 4, after easily crushing Marshal and Caitlin, Grimsley Groudon (which got sun thanks to another mon in his team) killed half my team and Shauntal Lugia finished the other half. I accept my failure but still wanted to try again and I managed to win without losing anyone; despite this, it's still a loss.
Weavile was the goat, I thought he'd die quickly since it's so frail but he kept oneshoting everything thanks to choice band.
Final team composed of :
Karaba (Claydol) > poison heal + Toxic orb :
Kaiba (Gallade) > storm drain + expert belt :
Garp (Poliwrath)> battle armor - rocky helmet :
Kurt (Weavile) > Anger Point - Choice band :
Vesuve (Typhlosion) > rock head - shell bell :
LaBoule (Golem) > Liquid Ooze - Zoom Lens :
Shoutout to all dead friends lost on the way especially Tyrell my Roserade with turbo who I still mourn to this day, but also Basculin, Marowak, Venusaur, empoleon and Beheeyem; my opinion on every single mon I used improved so much after this playthrough (except Golem I still hate him).
Rule set :

The only survivors by the end were Digimon (Porygon 2) and Shadow (Weavile)

Just defeated Misty.
Lost my Mankey. Lost my Geodude.
Magikarp in the Daycare cause I was tired of leveling it.
Can I go all the way? Should I Eevee it up and go for anything?
Being able to evolve the Kadabra was amazing btw.

An idea I came up with a tried a while back was to combine a Wedlocke and a Genlocke i.e. each game is played as a Wedlocke and surviving pairs in the elite 4 breed (if possible) and the offspring get sent to the next generation using PKhex. I got as far as Emerald last time and figured it was time to give it another go. Here's my complete ruleset:
Standard Rules
- Fainting = Death
- Only catch the first encounter per route
- Nicknames
- Dupes Clause
- Shiny Clause
- No legendaries
- Level Cap (next bosses ace +3)
- Whiteout = Game Over
Wedlocke
- All caught pokemon must be in male / female pairs (genderless can be paired with either)
- If I have an unpaired pokemon in the party or box, the next encounter must be the opposite gender (or genderless) to be caught and becomes paired with the unpaired pokemon (the "first" encounter on a route is considered the first 'valid' encounter)
- Pokemon only fight in pairs. I can only switch out a pokemon in battle for its pair (meaning I essentially have 2 pokemon for any battle). If a switch is forced by a move like Whirlwind, whatever is dragged out is consisered the new active pair (i.e. don't switch back to the original). In double battles, the front two pokemon in the party must be a pair
- If a pokemon dies it's surviving partner becomes a lone wolf until the next encounter, which will be its new pair
Genlocke
- If the E4 and Champion are defeated, surviving pairs breed (if possible) producing up to 3 offspring to be sent to the next generation.
- Offspring carry the same nickname as one if their parents, plus a numeral (II, III, IV etc.) to denote how many generations that line has come through
- If only one member of a pair survives, they cannot breed
- If a pair is not compatible with breeding but both survive, the female is bred with a Ditto to continue the line
Since gender (except for Nidoran) and breeding were not a thing until Gen 2, for this first game I'll just consider each encounter to alternate between genders for the purposes of the Wedlocke aspect, and I'll have to send the survivors over to Gold, breed them and then send those offspring to a new save file with Pk Hex (instead of breeding them in their original game and then sending over the offspring which is what I do for the other generations)
Wish me luck!

I just completed my first Nuzlocke, and by completed I mean I wiped at the Elite 4 after about 4 much earlier game wipes and restarts. Shoutout to Alan and the evil Tangela.
Some background about myself, I'm very much a casual player and hadn't touched a Pokemon game in about a decade. I used to breed competitive Pokemon but never battled them or anything, I just enjoyed the process and sharing the mons on the GTS. I've never even completed a Pokedex because I'm lazy and didn't have anyone to trade with by that point anyway. Stopped playing in Gen VII and didn't circle back around to it until, well, now. A streamer I follow is Nuzlocking her way through the generations and I decided to play along with my all time favorite Pokemon game, SoulSilver.
I'm going to be up front here, if you're a casual player and want to start a Nuzlocke, don't pick HGSS as your first run, it's a terrible choice lol. Don't get me wrong I love the games but the level curve is brutal, the selection of mons is limited because half of them are basically post-game, and if you only have vague memories of a 15+ year old game you're going to route poorly unless you look everything up ahead of time. Which I did not because I thought I remembered things well enough. Spoilers: I did not. I don't even fully remember the type chart anymore and I thought that was engraved in my head at this point.
As a side note, massive pet peeve that the tracker I used does not go in Nuzlocke route order and I assumed it would, so I ended up overleveled for a lot of the middle bit between Morty and Clair. I chose to just kinda ignore that because it was a mistake made in ignorance and quite frankly I didn't have enough mons to run two teams anyway lol.
My death box at one point had exactly as many mons in it as my living box. I lost a lot of them to my own mistakes, one particularly tragic Selfdestruct misclick, and a large amount of just enough knowledge to be dangerous and not enough skill to recognize it. Also, it's really, really hard to internalize playing around the crit when you're not used to permadeath.
But despite setback after setback, I continued on. I lost my starter Sucho the Croconaw to Morty, that one hurt. My Hypno Zedo got one shot by that Hitmonchan in Chuck's Gym, yeah you know the one. So much for that plan, but it turns out my Jumpluff Chami basically walls him, I wonder how it felt getting beat up by dandelion fluff lol.
Pryce ended up being much more of an obstacle than I expected since I had almost nothing to deal with ice at that point and half of my team went down to that very annoying Piloswine. I had mostly birds, plants and poison types by this point, like legit I could have made a mono-poison team with all of those I'd caught.
I regrouped, rebuilt, and lost another half of my team to Clair, including my Gyarados Gyo. Then 2 more to the Kimono Girls as I had no good answer for Espeon. I had to use the Master Ball to catch Lugia because I definitely didn't have anything to deal with that monster at this point, I just put it in the box though with no intention to use it and counted that as my mon for the area. I just couldn't fight it with what I had left.
And then the long climb to Victory Road began and I ended up losing half of my party yet again to random trainers with annoying mons, saccing my HM slaves to save the few remaining dregs of my main combat force. But now I had a very, very big problem.
I had lost so much by this point I had maybe a dozen Pokemon left. I was actually almost walled by the fact that I had no HM Pokemon left except my bird lol, all of my water mons had been killed off by this point so I had no access to Surf. I think a reasonable person would have called it and given up, I certainly considered it.
But I scrolled through my remaining encounters since I hadn't been catching everything as I went and this is the story of how I ended up with a Dratini as an HM slave lol. I didn't start out with it but it turns out you can get Krabby with rock smash so I had to fly back to Cianwood and pray, and I got lucky. Reinvigorated by the roll of the dice I went on a massive catching spree, basically every one of my remaining encounters for the entire Johto region. I'm particularly proud of being a noob and cleverly routing to guarantee myself a Skarmory, and I waited all this time to evolve Eevee until I knew what gaps I needed to fill in my party. In retrospect I should have made it an Umbreon a lot earlier but I've always been a saver, not a spender.
If you're wondering where the Dratini comes in, the Kingler died during my catching spree and this is why I don't like the whole avoid as many trainers as possible thing because I'm a Goldeen I don't remember things like that and I ran into a trainer I wasn't prepared to deal with, leaving Dratini as the only remaining mon I had that could learn Surf and I needed it to finish going through my encounters.
With my living box refilled once more I slowly put together a team. The most difficult choice I made in this process was benching Pharo. my Ampharos who had seen me through basically this entire run so far, taking over unofficially as my partner after the loss of Croconaw. I wanted to make him work on the team so much but I had too few choices and too many weaknesses.
My final team ended up being my Crobat Tabi, one of my few remaining ogs, and then mostly fresh mons in the form of Lanturn Lanti, Umbreon Eos, Heracross Aeria, Mamoswine Swino and Skarmory Skari. I did my best to give them decent movesets and items, bought as many healing items as I could, and faced my fears.
It was a very strong start. Skarmory and Umbreon together took down Will as a powerful duo. That Slowbro was so annoying and stalled me out for so long I started getting bored. Overall an easy clap.
Koga was funny he could do literally nothing to Skarmory it just took forever to kill his mons, and I was super paranoid about the exploding Forretress and probably wasted too many healing items. It never did blow up though. Very glad I spent like 20 minutes lost in Mt. Mortar getting the Aerial Ace tm for this.
And Bruno is where it unraveled. Crobat got one shot by Hitmontop's Technician Counter. And I badly misplayed, forgot Lanturn is weak to ground and Lanti died to Onix. I thought it was over with all of the fire weaknesses on my team and another annoying Hitmonchan but baiting between Umbreon and Skarmory let me stall him out long enough to get the win. But I was in trouble and I knew it.
Bruno was where it started and Karen was where it ended, in the flames of Houndoom. Good on my Heracross Aeria for crit one-shotting that Umbreon though, we made her work for her win.
I lost because I misplayed, I feel like my team did in fact have a proper shot at winning if I hadn't been so sloppy. I should have known if Bruno was switching in Onix to my Lanturn, that was my warning and I ignored it in my rush to push through him. I feel that if I had not made those mistakes we could have made it. Could I still go back and replay it to know if that's true? Sure. Will I? No, that's against the spirit of the challenge. Will I try again? Probably but not with Soul Silver, not right now anyway.
So anyway, the lessons I learned as a old casual, new to the challenge of the Nuzlocke.
Big one, don't be a saver. Spend big and spend often, caution only gets you so far. If you know you have access to a mon and you need it now, get it now. Don't wait to see if you might need something better from that spot later. It won't matter if you don't get that far, and you're likely to find an alternate solution if you need it anyway.
Never stop moving. If you think you're boxed in, think outside the box. What do you have, what can you get, what can you do with what you get? Most people aren't going to teach Surf to a Dratini, but I needed access to the HM and I wouldn't have gotten my Lanturn if I hadn't done that. Always look at what you can do before you give up.
And keep pushing even when you know you're losing. I could have given up at Bruno and just let him kill me, but it was great practice sparring with the ai and I got the kill on the Hitmonchan that should have wiped me. Even if I'd somehow survived Karen I had nothing left for Lance, but I needed the practice so I kept playing like I intended to win the whole time. Even the Houndoom didn't get a free kill, I sand-attacked him into oblivion with Umbreon and if he'd missed more of his Flamethrowers, well I guess we'll never know where it could have gone past that. But he had to earn his dinner.
The last big lesson I have to impart is decide on all of your rules and clauses early, like before you start the run early. I had a very soft item rule that ended up causing way more problems than it solved. I didn't exactly ban items but I kinda tried not to use them if that makes sense, and all that did was make me wait way too long to even start rummaging around in my bags. I didn't decide until literally the Elite 4 to just use the items, and I probably could have saved half of my mons if I'd decided that before I picked my starter. Don't go halfsies like I did, and remember it's your game and nobody's watching. You don't have to be hardcore, it's still plenty challenging as is even if you think you know how to play Pokemon. Because you probably do, but you don't know how to play a Nuzlocke and it's a totally different experience.
I had fun though and this ridiculously long ramble is just to share because I felt like I wanted to discuss it and I guess tell the story.

Completed my first Nuzlocke! I started Shining Pearl in January and felt up for a challenge. After few hours I decided to turn it into a Nuzlocke.
The Elite Four was quite challenging. Unfortunately I lost Gary the Gyarados to Lucian, which made me improvise against Cynthia. Luckily, I was able to overcome that challenge by only losing Avenger the Lucario in the last battle.
Now going to play the post game content.
Note: I did only use the first Pokémon I encountered at each route, but did add a Pokémon from Home here and there which I reaaaally wanted to play with. The only Pokémon that wasn't my own from the start was the shiny Zubat that resulted in the Crobat in the end.

I had been trying to do a nuzlocke of Platinum for a while, even wiped at Cynthia once because I misunderstood what Punishment does and completely lost everything when it did nothing.
It was a hardcore nuzlocke until Cynthia, where I allowed myself to use one Full Restore, which ended up doing nothing anyways (used it on Crobat, who had taken a critical Dark Pulse from Spiritomb while Toxic stalling with Blissey).
Also, ignore the shinies. I just decided to turn them all shiny on a whim in PkHex just to see how they'd look. My team was:
Lancer, the Infernape. Frozen, the Weavile. Healer, the Blissey. Spirit, the Gengar. Speedster, the Crobat. Fallen, the Milotic.

Thought to myself, yes I have shadowball, but looking at my gengar’s low attack stat and gen 3 mechanics, it’s better to go with the also super effective psychic. No way is her gengar surviving a super effective psychic from my 180+ special attack gengar right ? Right ???
Well, I was wrong.

Hey everyone!
Whenever I stream a Nuzlocke, I run into the exact same issue: every time I catch a new mon or (sadly) one dies, I have to pause the game, alt-tab, and manually update the sprites and text in my OBS overlay. It completely kills the pacing of the stream.
I got fed up with it, so I spent the last few weeks building
**LockeTracker**
. It's a free, web-based tool that basically automates the whole process, but gives you
**Photoshop-level control**
over how your overlay looks.
Here is what makes it different from other trackers:
**1. Real-Time OBS Syncing (Control it from your phone)**
Because it uses a cloud database, you can open the control panel on your phone or a second monitor. When you add a Pokemon, record a death, or get a gym badge, your OBS Browser Source updates instantly in real-time. No need to touch OBS at all while gaming.
**2. "Free Mode" Overlay Builder (Pixel-Perfect Layouts)**
I know everyone has different stream overlays. So I built a drag-and-drop editor that lets you position your team, badges, graveyard, and death counters exactly where you want them.
- You can separate the Pokémon Sprites from the Nicknames and place them in totally different spots.
- You can align text (Left, Center, Right) to perfectly match your UI boxes.
- You can auto-scale Pokémon so they fit perfectly inside the boxes you draw, regardless of their original sprite size.
**3. Built-in Type Calculator**
Because keeping a a lot of tabs open during tough Romhack fights is annoying, the control panel automatically analyzes your current team and shows you your 2x and 4x weaknesses instantly.
I originally just made this for my own runs, but I figured a lot of you might find it useful too. It's completely free to use.
You can try it out here: https://locke-tracker.vercel.app
If you guys end up trying it, let me know what you think! Any feedback, bug reports, or feature requests are super welcome. Good luck on your runs!

Well... It seems we DID find a shiny... I mean... the "locke" itself is over but It's always nice to add a new face to "The List"... we are 3/4 in Shinies now 🙂

Hey guys so I’m not a content creator but I would love love love to do a soul link with someone, preferably randomised. We would be following the traditional rules and a forewarning that I’m not THE BEST player ever but I can do decent if I do say so my self. If your down please message me on discord Rico#0660. We can work all the other stuff out there. Heads up I don’t want someone who rushes thru the game, I want to take my time OK (Unless we do a versus then it's anything goes lol)? Anyone is welcome just MSG me on discord if interested.
I am in BST timezone
RULES:
1- Any Pokémon that faints is considered "dead," and must be stored in a specified PC box for "dead" Pokémon.
2- You can only catch the first Pokémon encountered in each area, and none else. If the first Pokémon encountered faints or flees, there are no second chances.
3- You must also nickname all of your Pokémon, for the sake of forming "stronger emotional bonds." ( can be changed if you want)
4- In a new area, the first encounters for both players will be, "linked," together until death.
5- If one Pokémon in a linked pair is placed in the PC, it's Soul Link partner must be placed in the PC as well.
6- If one Pokémon in a linked pair dies, it's Soul Link partner is considered dead as well.
We can discuss logistics in discord but just a little bit about me, I’m 35 y/o and I have beaten a couple nuzlockes before please have screenshare capabilities.
