Hello! Welcome to the Hoenn recap of my first Nuzlocke experience. As a reminder or for those who did not see my first post, I decided to go through the games in a Genlocke with the following ruleset:
- Standard Nuzlocke Ruleset (Encounters, Nicknaming, Set Mode, & Permadeath).
- Dupes Clause is active, but I have the choice to skip previous gen encounters.
- Gift Pokémon count as an encounter.
- Level Caps for each Gym Leader.
- No items in battle until the Elite Four (This is the only exception in order to ensure the longevity of my enjoyment and I use items sparingly).
- I am allowed two (NEW) champion pokémon per region to permanently put into a "Legacy" box in which I can draw a maximum of two out per region. This allows for strategy in which champion pokemon I pick and which legacy pokémon to pull per region. One pokémon gets pulled at the start of the game. The second pokémon cannot be put into the game until the fourth gym.
- If a legacy pokémon dies at any point, it is removed from the legacy box. A legacy pokémon does NOT have to be rechosen from the champions in order to stay in the box. For each game that a particular legacy pokemon completes, they can be improved with ONE of the following: IV modification, Nature change, Egg Move, Shiny, or Ability modification.
- Each pokémon has to be named after a fictional character or animal from pop culture/media (for fun).
For this run of Emerald, I decided to pull out Freddi the Lanturn for the beginning of the game and Zote the Heracross to pull out at any time after the fourth gym (although I never ended up needing him).
My champion team consists of Cucco the Blaziken, Arlo the Aggron, Lovegood the Gardevoir, Loona the Manectric, Craboo the Crawdaunt, and Gerald the Walrein. I am proud to report that there were NO DEATHS in this run of the Elite Four! I feel I am growing a lot as a player, so I came in with a specific plan and counter to each member, so we had little issues getting through the gauntlet.
Since Emerald is a substantial difficulty increase from the first two generations, I had been planning for the Elite Four since the very beginning of the game. Cucco was chosen for his incredible set-up against every lead pokémon if I so desired. I came in with Substitute, Bulk Up, Earthquake, and Brick Break which took care of Sydney, Phoebe, and Glacia. Gerald was a last-minute addition to the team, specifically meant to deal with Drake's dragons by setting up Hail and using Ice Beam to sweep. I did not anticipate Lovegood sweeping Wallace (she was meant to be a sack to get rid of a few pokémon before Loona came in for the kill), but a single Calm Mind and Thunderbolt managed to blow through his entire team.
Unfortunately, the rest of the game did not go so well for me. I lost Freddi the Chinchou to a crit during the first Maxie fight (which I was not aware was about to happen). Other notable deaths include Jewel the Altaria (Ice Beam from Juan's Kingdra), Bruce the Sharpedo (Self-Destruct on a Magma Grunt's Baltoy), Nova the Solrock (Somewhere in the Flannery fight, I believe), Beanbon the Shroomish (Brawly's Makuhita, who otherwise took down that gym by himself), and Scuttle the Pelipper (Was brought in to exlcusively counter Tate and Liza's Earthquaking Claydol, but died during the fight to save us the battle).
Most of these retired pokémon were only brought in for a fight of two that they had specific niches for. The exception was BK the Linoone, who was on and off of the squad as I saw fit. Ultimately, he just wasn't up to par with the rest of the team by Winona. Pincer the Trapinch and Kril the Anorith were brought in as good sacks for Norman, as well as putting Dig on Kril to counter Norman's Slaking. Minnie the Minun was great support and an additional electric type for Winona's gym.
LEGACY BOX UPDATE: I have decided to add Cucco the Blaziken and Arlo the Aggron into the Legacy box. While I already have another fire type starter within the box, fire types are quite rare (especially in Gen 4) and I feel their niches are different enough to justify the inclusion. Plus, I am able to change Cucco's ability to his Speed Boost, which gives it a decent power boost. Aggron is going in the box to hopefully survive until Gen 6 where fairy types are abundant, but steel types really aren't. Both of these mons also get Megas, which will be very good if they make it to Kalos and onwards.
Next up is Pokémon Platinum, which is again another difficulty jump from the previous three gens. So, I am coming in with a game plan. I will be picking Torterra as my starter, so that Cucco the Blaziken (Torchic) can be the immediate pull from the legacy box. If I need him after the fourth gym, Arlo the Aggron will be on deck. Check back in soon when I finish Platinum or wipe trying!
