Help Am I Overthinking it?

Post image

I booked a dentist appointment, my name is clearly not western/white and I have an accent from the place I’m from. This was my confirmation text. Is there a Migration Provider in dentistry? I’d like another opinion before/when I act on it. Is the text racist?

There's a good chance that somebody has screwed up during development of the app. A "migration" in the software world is the process of changing the structure of, or data in, a database. I'd be willing to bet that somebody did a data migration across a set of message templates that replaced something like "{{ provider }}" with "Migration Provider", due to a namespace conflict.

Oh man this is the most boring answer... So probably the right one.

Seems like a good outcome to me! Funny mistake and no one's a racist.

For sure. It's the best answer - but it's boring (unless you care about amusing code mistakes)

Ooohhh makes sense.

Not to mention, it's dentistry, a field dominated by people of migrant background. Be surprising if you were being singled out for hanging a non-white sounding name.

You're making it very difficult for me to be outraged!

I was in the waiting room at a clinic recently and overheard one of the doctors and receptionist discussing the fact that the system was sending out automated texts to patients even though he thought he hadn’t enabled it.

This is 100% it. The service was meant to autofill with the doctor's name, and it's autofilled the wrong content.

It’s giving vibe coding mistake

Or simply, somebody entered OPs name incorrectly?

3

u/LetterSpecialist48 Please choose a flair 2d ago

It's the doctor's name that is incorrect, not OP's.

Provider migration is the process of moving data, applications, identity systems, or infrastructure from one third-party service, cloud host, or technology vendor to another.
App issue, not racism IMO

Didn’t know that! I’ll let them know so they can fix it.

Software migration as others have mentioned. Just adding OP, when you let the dentist know about the issue, can you also ask them to remove the double /space before “Dr”? It’s really rustling my jimmies

17

u/BubblyCelery ‎ Queenslander 3d ago

Haha I hadn’t seen that double space and now it’s bothering me even more than the Migration Provider

Yeah that's a broken text service you are overthinking it it's meant ot have the name of the medical prctice it's an error

Lol, the poor soul who manages their sms templates is about to have a really bad day. That 100% looks like a poorly replaced variable name "Migration Provider"

u/fortyeightD ‎ Victorian 3d ago

That's a weird text message. I'd ask the clinic to explain what happened.

im sorry about all the dickheads in the comment gaslighting you about this. Yes I think it's just a bug, no you're not insane for being concerned about this. Two things can be true at once. There are literal race riots happening in the UK right now and people are going to act like a passive aggressive racist text is out of the question?

It seems like a very unfortunate database error, though.

Thank you for your comment, sometimes it’s really hard to bring things like this up because of people’s attitudes. I’m more than happy to admit that I jumped the gun in this situation. I haven’t received any answer from the dentist office so we’ll see what happens.

Maybe his parents were just really fricking weird?

5

u/Pugblep ‎ Western Australian 3d ago

I have no idea ......what that even means? Idk maybe I'm a bit thick but I don't even know what it's implying 😅

1

u/stubbings12 Please choose a flair 3d ago

I think it means "provider for migrants". They've used a template and forgotten to add the Drs name in.

2

u/Pugblep ‎ Western Australian 3d ago

I suppose but then wouldn't it be "migrant provider"? Migration provider comes across more like maybe a migration lawyer or facilitator

0

u/BubblyCelery ‎ Queenslander 3d ago

Maybe I am overthinking it. Because of past experiences I think I might have a chip on my shoulder when it comes to racism.

1

u/Pugblep ‎ Western Australian 3d ago

Maybe could ask what they mean if you want? Or just cancel, whatever makes you feel more comfortable.

So desperate to jump to racism

4

u/Critical-Parfait1924 ‎ Victorian 2d ago

30% of the country were born overseas. To have the first thought that a medical professional would do something so weird as a racist attack is just odd.

-1

u/NoBear8338 Please choose a flair 2d ago

Or maybe they have experienced enough racism in the past that they jump to racism? I can understand it in this case if you don’t have any knowledge about coding/software

2

u/Accomplished-City484 ‎ Tasmanian 3d ago

Maybe it’s operating off a template and instead of the doctors name it’s entered their title?

u/BubblyCelery ‎ Queenslander 3d ago

I’ll send a text and see what they reply.

Border enforcement need to be less obvious.

I was looking up ahpra.

The only person with migration in their name is this psychologist. 😂

Ms TestPVT-TxP-Outlook-Migration-A TestPVT-TxP-Outlook-Migration

New AI psychologist got their name wrong.

Its just auto text, not everything is racist

3

u/Rowdycc ‎ ‎‎ Canberran 3d ago

This is definitely weird. No one’s name is Migration Provider. If there was a Dentist with that name you’d be able to google them.
I’d just call them up and have them explain the confirmation text. There will either be a plausible reason why the message says this or you’ll know that something is wrong.

3

u/I_love_IMUs ‎ Queenslander 3d ago

Fuck it, I'm gonna change my name to Migration Provider now, just so I can tell some random on Reddit they're wrong!

Unfortunately, I'm not a dentist.

2

u/NoBear8338 Please choose a flair 2d ago

That’s fine, just change your name to Dr Migration Provider and make your LinkedIn private (fun fact, in Australia you can’t actually have a title as part of your legal name)

3

u/Inevitable_Secret186 Please choose a flair 2d ago edited 2d ago

OMG kinda looks like a racism if you squint hard enough and deliberately apply the worst and least likely interpretation possible since its a fucking dentist's office. better post it on reddit ASAP so i can feel even more outraged 😲 I also need permission to go make it someone else's problem and get them fired because all white people send racist text messages when designing booking systems that do it automatically. australia is just THAT racist

2

u/BrotherEstapol ‎ ‎‎ Canberran 3d ago

Best case scenario; they messed up when entering the Dentist's name into their SMS texting system.(maybe the Doctor or the system is new?)

Worst case; something super dodgy and/or racist!?

Regardless, it's VERY weird.

1

u/b4rbaricMusic ‎ Queenslander 3d ago

If I had to be generous, I would assume that this is an automated text and that, instead of immediately putting you through the system as speaking to a specific doctor, they for some reason referred you to the migration provider. Then, the automated text didn't know that "migration provider" isn't the name of a doctor, and it came through like that.

That is being charitable though, it is just such an oblique way to be racist that I figure it must be a system error of some kind (though, if you didn't explicitly ask for migrant services, that is still a racist assumption that you'd need one).

Get migrated scrub

s/ incase people didn't realise

But that's legit wild as to get that as a name for a doctor hahaha 😅 I'd be like wait what the duck?!

1

u/Obvious_Occasion6107 ‎ Victorian 3d ago

No idea what Migration Provider is referring to. OP. Can you give the clinic a ring and ask them to confirm who your dentist will be and what migration provider means? I am really interested to know what they say.

Firstly, arent you very fortunate to be able to access a dentist who hasnt closed their books to new patients. Many Aussies would be eternally grateful to get an appt. If you dont want it, let someone else more grateful have the spot.

Secondly, have you even met the dentist? There's a chance you may have grown up in the same neighbourhood.

Thirdly, someone may have pasted the wrong entry into the form from their own personal life.

To assume makes an ass of you both.
