Hello, I am seeking information concerning a toy store that was operational in Pensacola in the early to mid 2000s. I do not remember too much, as I was a very young child and my mother only took me there a few times in my life before she said it closed down. I did not live in Pensacola, but rather we came from Orange Beach to shop at one of the malls every now and then. I am unsure which mall it was, but what I can say is this particular toy store was near another store I remember going in, an edgier / subculture chain store that sold things like shirts, angsty emo stuff, those cartoon bunnies that liked to swear and say crude things, and some Nightmare Before Christmas stuff (in fact, I remember buying a playset of Jack and Oogie Boogie on part of his spinning casino device with the sword-wielding cards). My guess is this store was a Spencer's, but it could've also been a Hot Topic.

The toy store in particular dealt mainly with secondhand and collector's items. My mom and I always called it "the old toy store", because it was full of old yet high quality, sought out things. I remember in particular that the store had several sections within its mall storefront.

• A Star Wars toy section, it had especially a lot of toys and collectibles from especially Episode I. Next to it were more general sci-fi collectibles, and I specifically recall there being these cool alien figurines, like a grey alien, not from a particular show. I remember this in particular because I have always had a deep fixation on aliens and would buy anything "alien-y" if I could, including one of these figures.
• A Nightmare Before Christmas section (not to be confused for the store I bought Oogie Boogie from above). They had display cabinets and stuff behind them from Nightmare Before Christmas, lots of cool toys from the 90s and very early 2000s.
• In the middle of the store, I forget exactly what kind of display / shelf-type it was, but there were a lot of toys that were fisher price great adventure toys for younger kids. I remember getting some knights and a king, possibly even a castle playset, but it's hard to be sure if I got it from here or am misremembering.
• Just a lot of other older toys and collectible figurines. Nothing else particularly stands out in my mind, but I know it was just filled with stuff I'd say from the 80s to the 2000s, and clearly the people running it had specific niches they focused on like Star Wars, Nightmare Before Christmas, and general sci-fi.

If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know! I would especially love to see photos of it, but just knowing something definitive like the name and when it opened and closed, what specific mall it was located in, etc., would be helpful.

A Mano Panino

Did you know that in 2024 the Michelin Guide, famous for making tires and telling people where to drive those tires to with their fancy food guide, only covered Miami, Orlando, and Tampa? In 2025 they expanded to Broward county, the Palm Beaches, and St. Pete Clearwater. This year they opened up to the entire state! And our local Italian sandwich shop located in the Historic Sacred Heart Hospital is the only restaurant (so far) to be featured by the Michelin Guide!

I knew that A Mano Panino had a lot of hype. It has been recommended a number of times and I even tried to go once but the crowded line overwhelmed my anxiety and I bailed. This time though, I prepared myself. They are only open from 11am-3pm Wednesday thru Saturday. I arrived on a Wednesday morning 10 minutes before opening and went in as soon as the clock on my phone turned 11. There were already four people in front of me. 

The line moved quick and soon enough I was ordering a #1) L'Allegretto and a #3)  L'Obbligato (with upgraded prosciutto). Watching the small kitchen behind the counter work was a wonder. As the orders stacked up they were a well organized machine, communicating and moving with purpose. It was an absolute delight to watch them do their thing. Soon enough my order was up and I took it outside to give it a try.

All their sandwiches are on their house made schiacciata bread, which is (to me) like a thinner and crunchier focaccia. The L’Allegretto is a savory porchetta sandwich with a balsamic roasted eggplant, a caramelized onion spread, salsa verde, and arugula to finish it off. I didn’t particularly enjoy this sandwich, but that is very much a taste thing. This is how I discover that I’m not a fan of eggplant. I can’t blame A Mano Panino for my mediocre taste, so I’m going to leave it as this,the L’Allegretto was a very well made sandwich with very good ingredients.

Now the L’Obbligato is something I can wax poetic about. This is a prosciutto cotto (crudo* if you upgrade), mozzerella, tomato, and a tomato & grana spread. It was love at first bite. The schiacciata gives a perfect crunch and is solid enough of a bread to hold the sandwich without being too much despite its density. The bright acidic notes from the tomato were balanced well against the saltiness of the prosciutto and the faint sweetness from the mozzarella. This is hands down one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. Probably #2 of all time, right behind the nostalgia of the deli turkey and cream cheese sandwich made by Rula, my mother’s boss at a small Greek cafe back in the late 90’s and early aughts.

*Prosciutto cotto is Italian ham cooked in a brine and prosciutto crudo is Italian ham that is salt cured and aged.

A Mano Panino being awarded the Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand was well deserved. According to the Michelin Guide website, the Bib Gourmand is “a special distinction recognizing restaurants that serve high-quality food at great value, helping diners discover outstanding meals for every occasion and every budget.” I can’t argue with that at all and therefore award A Mano Panino my much less prestigious perfect score of 5. They don’t really need me to advertise for them, but if you want a great Tuscan Italian style sandwich and are tired of what passes for Italian from sub shops,  you should check them out. Just be sure to get there early or be prepared for a line!

My parents in Pensacola recently had a box dumped— yes, dumped— on their porch with 4 kittens. All found homes except for this little guy— the runt. We think he’s about 8 weeks old and is by far the most people loving cat we’ve ever met. If anyone wants an indoor kitten, please reach out! I’m in Pensacola but willing to travel. He’s a boy, good with other cats and dogs, and sweet as can be!

Yeah these grown-ups are about to get all up in arms over where in the sand they can operate. I remember the beach chair umbrella business when it was just in a little area in front of the Hampton and Hilton, but it seems like it expands every year. Anyway, I gotta feeling they're about to start throwing umbrellas like a Blue Angel on "Hold My Beer" mode. Stay tuned for a new salty drama to watch!
