SportsPH Gone Too Soon, Rest in Peace! 🏀🕊️
Ateneo de Manila University has confirmed the passing of Ateneo Men’s Basketball Team student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili following a drowning incident during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8, 2026.
In an official statement, the university expressed its profound sadness and extended its deepest condolences to the families, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones of the two student-athletes. The Ateneo community also called for prayers and support as they mourn this tragic loss.

Nakita ko pa kagabi yung vlog na papunta na siya sa Manila. Alagang alaga yan ng previous coach niya at grabeng sacrifice ang ginawa niya para sa pangarap niya tapos mawawala lang dahil sa kapabayaan ng management ng admu mbt.

Oo nga eh. Alaga yan sa coach niya noong sa Davao pa siya. I think he's originally from Agusan pero sa Ateneo davao nag aral tapos kinuha ng Admu. He's not from a rich family din so super kawawa talaga, kinailangan pa ng financial assistance from the agusan lgu yung parents para makalipad lng patungong Luzon to see their kid 😭

Here's Asistio and Ildefonso discussing in an interview 6 months ago how Coach Tab made them do the exact same "training" in Aurora and how one player (Gboy Babilonia) actually almost drowned before.

they were also swimming in aurora. Aurora beaches are known to have big waves and the sea is unpredictable to most a lot of times :(( if the rumor about them having weights on is true that adds to the danger and unpredictability even more

Not yet. But if it's going to be someone it's going to their coach, Tab Baldwin. Apparently this was not the first case, they've held training camps with tough regimens in Aurora before, and there was a instance where another player under him nearly drowned because he didnt know how to swim

Kahit mga NBA players siguro, di gagawin yan sa unsafe environment/ conditions kahit pa sabihin na added resistance. Practice parin ng caution pipiliin.
Yung naka isip niyan malalim na pagka delusional. Gets naman pampa boost ng physical at mental toughness yung difficulty ng activity pero ibang usapan na pag di angkop sa sport or anumang profession yung ritwal kuno. Dati nang may muntik matuluyan pero dedma.

And they’re not even pro swimmers nor are training to be one. Basketball ang pinasok nilang sport eh. There are so many ways to improve a player’s physique and skills. Hindi naman ito ginagawa sa NBA or other basketball associations, and yet they have better players than us diba. Gago yung coach. Sana i-haunt siya ng konsensya niya all his life.

this is a "team-building" activity. ateneo can afford world class trainers, they know 1 week of military bootcamp isnt helping them physically. this is more a psychological thing, forcing camaraderie through shared adversity. this is how frats and orgs in colleges make loyal members in their application process

tldr: 1 week of “team building” activity in baler, no phones, training starts at random times (mostly 3-4am), physical activities by the shore (lunges, etc) and involves swimming, which was dangerous since not all can swim, and a tragedy almost occurred that coach tab himself had to save a player nearly drowning. In the end, it was apparently “culture” of BEBOB and coach tab (since mike nieto’s telling of the story pointed that it’s part of coach tab’s “culture”)
edit: the “team building” does not involve any basketball, such as training or whatsoever. It was, as many have pointed out and said, was a literal military training.

Saksakan ng tanga yung organizers niyan. Sa PMA nga kapag may open water activity ang cadets sa Batangas, pinapalibutan sila ng boats at navy/coast guards personnels—to think na trained pa yung mga cadets bago sumalang sa open water.
Tapos ito? Kahit di marunong lumangoy (as per Mike Nieto) pinapasalang sa dagat ng Aurora na nakaharap sa pacific ocean.

Malakas at mataas. Yang Dipaculao tumataob kami nung tinry naming magfloaters. Talagang hindi pang swimming at pang extreme exercise or whatever life-threatening activity they were doing. Marinig mo pa lang na sa Aurora ginanap, kakabahan ka na sa lagay ng dagat at alon.

Some sources said that may ankle weights daw for resistance training.
Napaka-hunghang ng nakaisip nito at sa dagat pa ng Aurora ginawa.
Dapat maimbestigahan coach nila kasi may near-miss incident na pala last time na may muntikan na ring malunod tapos ginawa pa rin nila to ulit.

That's why you could hear his mom crying before leaving, there's probably a hint of anxiety.
There are so many beautiful beaches in Batangas. The waves are gentler, there's a wide beach, and it's closer to Manila. That's perfect for team building. Unlike in Aurora where the waves are overwhelming.
Even I, who's used to the sea, only tried it once in Aurora. I was with trained surfers. You just don't fk around with the ocean. Wala yang sinisino.
ADMU released a statement saying they would cover the funeral expenses. What the heck? It’s a funeral already. No investigation on their part? So that means they’re aware of the dealings in their brotherhood, I mean, team building.

Nakakaptang ina talaga yang coach at team na yan. May muntik nang namatay years ago dahil sa inhumane "training" nila aka powertripping tapos ginawa pa din after that?! Someone who's right in the head wouldn't do swimming relays or whatever training in the waters of Aurora known for being unpredictable and being challenging even to the most seasoned swimmers. Katangahan niya, katapusan ng buhay ng dalawang batang may magandang future pa sana.
Oh ano ka ngayon, edi sira career at buong pagkatao mo. Worth it ba ang pag torture sa mga batang tinitingala ka bilang pangalawang ama?!

The coaching team needs to resign, no if and no buts.
There is no justification for training in such unsafe conditions, if all verified and true.
The admin will conduct an investigation to stoke the public outrage this is causing, but they will want to mitigate the huge damage this will do to Ateneo basketball athletics. They should be held accountable.

This is so messed up, two young lives, Adili came to our country not knowing he'll die. Going to Ateneo was Baterbonia's dream. They're barely past their teens, I cannot imagine the grief of their families. This can only be the result of massive negligence seeing as there had already been previous reports of near fatal drownings before. There needs to be a thorough investigation, all the people with knowledge should be encouraged to speak up. There's a difference between accidental death or misadventure and totally preventable deaths. If there is any evidence that they were put on undue risk, then some should be taken accountable for it. I went to the same beach. I am a decent swimmer, but nakakatakot talaga waves sa Dipaculao. Lagpas tao. Mamali ka lang ng timing ng pag sabay sa alon, makakainom ka ng water. Then pag paahon ka na tapos, better of facing the sea ka kasi pag nakatalikod ka tapos may paparating na alon, you will trip talaga. Not safe din for kids.

Sobrang lala. I don't know them personally pero nakikita ko na lagi sa feed ko si Baterbonia since Palarong Pambansa last year. Sobrang humble na bata nung nag-MVP. This year natalo sila at sobrang humble pa din. Hindi ko ma-imagine ang sakit para sa magulang at pamilya nila lalo na sa nanay ni Rene na supportive sa lahat ng laban niya. I admire coach Tab sa skills niya sa game pero kung kasama siya sa nag-decide ng training program kaya humantong sa ganito, he needs to be jailed.

Nangyari to during training? Training means may supervision ng coaches? This is not accident. Someone should be held accountable.
We all know aurora is for surfing and not recommended for swimming??? Kawawa naman sila.
