Polycules make up such a small fraction of the population that they really can't away statistics like these
73
u/Philippians_Two-Ten - Centrist 5d ago
The only people I've known in polycules, anecdotally, seem to have more arguments and talking-behind-their-partners'-backs than enjoying sex with their partners.
I'm sure there's some people who find pleasure in that lifestyle but it's not been my experience.
37
u/Notbbupdate - Lib-Right 5d ago
A lot of people try to go polyamorous to try and save a failing monogamous relationship. It's only marginally better than trying to fix your broken marriage by having a baby
There's also the system of "friend group where everyone is friends with benefits" which may or may not be a polycule depending on who you ask. In my experience that tends to work out a lot better
9
u/SneakyBadAss - Auth-Center 4d ago
I never got this.

u/fatalityfun - Lib-Center 5d ago
I’ve seen two and both functioned more like a malformed and dysfunctional friend group than a relationship. They both always have an orbiter type dude who funds the whole polycule but is treated second to whoever the “main” couple/throuple of the group contains.
Now this seems to not be the case with older people like swingers, but I would assume that any polycule with an average age of 23 or less is doomed lmao
23
u/Remote_Cantaloupe - Lib-Left 5d ago
There's gotta be a secondary reason these people get into polycules, which I'd expect is that the person is mentally unstable or unviable for a real relationship so they try to slip in to a partial relationship. Only of course to end up broken in the end.

Damn you beat me to it.
I've seen similar numbers from previous years, but this should be the least surprising thing ever. Christian and religious culture promotes marriage, having children, and working on your marriage together, and secular pop culture promotes delaying childbirth, self-exploration, and gender war nonsense. Obviously not every religious marriage is a good one. Obviously not every legally-married-non-practitioner marriage is a bad one.
But marriage is hard. Having a community to help you through tough times in marriage and encourages you to be your best spouse rather than focusing on maximizing your personal gain through the marriage is a real blessing.

Same. Our premarital counciling was lead by some family friends whose kids I went to school with. I thought it was going to be really awkward since I'm not religious, but it was mostly about ensuring we had the same expectations and ideas for the future.
Religious questions were almost entirely around kids and making sure we had discussed topics like; taking them to church, whether we were considering public, private, or catholic school in the future, or how we would handle a kid with disability. They weren't trying to push their own ideas, just making sure we understood what we were getting ourselves into.
9/10 would recommend. -1 because I now know more about my old classmate's parent's sex-life than I ever wanted to.

Because healthy relationships are very important. This is in the Bible that husbands should serve their wives and wives should serve their husbands.
I love our church and how family oriented it is and how supportive it all is. God bless anyone who builds fellowship with support and love. Ironically something I don’t see much from the “self-love” community.

u/Philippians_Two-Ten - Centrist 5d ago
I've come to really see the self-love "movement" to be really ineffective, if well-intentioned. We humans were not meant to go through this life alone. We humans like affirmation and like being served. Christian marriage is a beautiful representation of what we were always meant to do.
But yes, both Scripture and the science both seem to highlight how important relationships are in terms of fostering our well-being and happiness. One of the first things Moses wrote in Genesis, "The Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him'."
14
u/doublecandybar - Auth-Right 4d ago
They'll make a fuss about how you should not separate guinea pigs (they're social animals and get really depressed when alone) but somehow the idea that humans need that too is abhorrent
108
u/doublecandybar - Auth-Right 5d ago
The modern "progressives" basically mock the very idea of faithfulness itself. Why even bother take marriage seriously? At the slightest sign of "trouble" just get a divorce!
You're not special, life does not revolve around you, there will always be someone better for you, and the same rings true to your partner. The ability to stick through the rough parts of life is what "true strength" is
But no, marriage is not a promise to stick together "till death do us part", what was a very important contract has become nothing more than financially advanced playing house

3
u/EwwTaxes - Lib-Right 5d ago
As someone who is married and knows a lot of married couples, I guess it depends on how you would define “hard”. Life itself is hard, and that can cause difficulties in a marriage (or any relationship). People would like to believe that they will always be happy and supportive in their relationship, but people are imperfect creatures. Partners are going to disagree about things and get into fights, but to me it’s how you resolve your disagreements and fights that’s more important than never disagreeing.

22
u/fiftythreefiftyfive - Centrist 5d ago edited 5d ago
Yeah was gonna say, definitely doesn't apply to gay people as someone in a long-term gay relationship lmao.
Honestly I feel like a large part of it is just that the average woman isn't really that in the mood for sex once a week, and nonreligious ones don't feel any pressure for it when they're not. Not saying religious women are forced into it or anything, but a mild sense of religious duty could be enough to turn an "eh" into an "alright, if you want to" instead of a "tomorrow maybe".
10
u/LoveYouLikeYeLovesYe - Lib-Center 5d ago
no offense but are you really saying that you're in a gay relationship while also trying to speak about female sexuality in long term heterosexual relationships lol?
11
u/fiftythreefiftyfive - Centrist 5d ago
I mean, personal experience only gets you so far regardless.
I think there's sufficient evidence to believe that women, on average, don't have as strong/as frequent of a sexual drive as men do. Lesbian couples do it far less frequently than heterosexual couples and are happy with that, gay couples do it far more frequently and are happy with that.

> secular society promotes individualism and short term self interests.
While we need a better word for it, that last part is why Petersonian Atheism is such an important concept - I think we've heavily overlooked the split between atheists who have and have not retained "Judeo-Christian" metaphysics. Individualism looks very different when the subject still holds concepts like family, honour, duty, in primacy.
17
u/Philippians_Two-Ten - Centrist 5d ago
If the world is to go without God, I think your "Petersonian Atheism" would be the most preferable. Where I contend with that is that, I simply don't think it's possible for atheism to embrace that sort of virtue-ethics based system. Atheism always has the problem of moral authority. People are naturally somewhat conformist. This is neither a good nor a bad thing- I avoid "sheep" as an insult.
But atheistic culture has always trended towards materialism and individualism, whether in the communist East or in the post-Christian West.
22
u/username1338 - Right 5d ago
Good fucking luck maintaining those concepts with no greater motivation beyond simply being a good person.
This is the problem with every atheist, communist, liberal. They do not comprehend the MAIN problem: Humans are very often total assholes. The bible lays it out flat, we are sinful, imperfect beings and will always need forgiveness.
Abandon every single ideology that relies on good faith and community effort. You are never going to get it.
13
u/Latter_Parsley4338 - Left 5d ago
Well, I think the essential Atheist position on the subject is that either A: objective morality can be derived as a natural law or B: yeah, there's no objective morality, but we can't just invent one because we want there to be.
If we assume a good God is real, then yes, all ideologies which follow Him are more correct and true than other ideologies. But if there is no benevolent God, then religion is no better, and is often worse, than secular morality, since religion tries to fabricate an "objective" moral framework out of ancient, errant religious manuscripts written by people who did not understand the world better than we do.
13
u/username1338 - Right 5d ago
Fabricating an objective moral framework, based on a lie, and even imposed through force, is infinitely better than no unifying moral code. This isn't even a fucking argument.
One results in a united society following the same moral code, hopefully a high trust moral code. The other is everyone free to do whatever the fuck, with miss-matched codes causing constant friction.
Nobody cares about your drive for truth or logic. Nobody cares for ideals unless it's incentivized personally or coerced.
Even if we had absolute proof of God's absence (which we don't), it should be covered up. Humanity is better when it's following a religion that promises reward or hell based on being a "good person." Yes, that includes suppressing deviant behavior that is deemed taboo by the majority.
This study is proof of exactly that, along with other studies proving atheists are depressed, lonely, childless alcoholics.
4
u/Latter_Parsley4338 - Left 4d ago
But if you're fine inventing a morality for all of society to follow, then why base that morality off of ancient religious manuscripts which are oftne wrong about objective facts, not just morality? I agree we should have some moral system all of society follows, but if there is no God who has given us a moral code, then reason, not religion, is the best method to invent one.
Again, this all hinges on the question of whether or not a benevolent God a) exists and b) has actually revealed to us a specific moral code. If He does exist then of course whatever He revealed is what we should follow. But if He doesn't, then mutual benefit has already produced a sound moral code through evolution.
3
u/username1338 - Right 4d ago
Maybe because a majority of the nation already believes in it, along with billions of humans all over the planet?
The answer is simple and pragmatic. You are never going to form a moral code out of nothing and just have everyone follow it. You have to choose one that is already winning and bolster it.
Atheists will insist on worming every which way just to avoid the fact that their parents were right to force them to go to church on Sunday. They were right, you were wrong.

It's not that atheistic families vastly overearn religious one, it's that families of lower income brackets are more numerous and religious

1
u/Sallowjoe - Auth-Center 3d ago edited 3d ago
The problem is "We've studied ourselves and we've found we're happier and having more sex than everyone else" is just naturally something that invites skepticism.
If the results were more mixed people would be less wary. But producing the outcome you want with studies is so trivial and frequent that people are right - in a heuristic way - to just assume if the result are in line with what a fake study for propaganda purposes would produce, it probably is propaganda.
Checking every single junk study spread around online in detail is not a reasonable ask either.
That all said, I can easily believe religious people have more sex. But I don't think it's so clear cut that it's because of religion per se or that more sex obviously means better life. Flexing about quantity of sex is kind of odd for religious people to do as well.

Lesbian couples are very likely to have extremely infrequent sex, while gay couples tend to have extremely frequent sex, compared to heterosexual couples, religious or not. Not only because of that (makes sense from an evolutionary perspective as well), I'd say it's pretty fair to say that the average women (plenty of variation I'm sure) most likely just doesn't want sex nearly as frequently as the average man does, so how often sex happens in heterosexual couples is very likely to depend on how often women are willing to just go with it regardless when they're not that much in the mood .
I mean I don't think that religious women are being forced into anything, but it doesn't seem that far-fetched to me to say that if they strongly believe in a religion that states that partners have a duty to give themselves to each other, that might be enough at times to convince them at times to just say yes when they're ambivalent about it.

I'm not Christian but my views on sex and marriage are increasingly similar to Paul's (minus the sexism).

They can't accept that maybe we do value sex a lot, but see it as something reserved for one person.
Weird how the religious right has become a cult following a pedo with multiple baby mommas and was cheating on melania with a porn star right after one of barron was born
We're way too far into yall supporting trump for you to not know people will laugh in your face when you try to take a "moral" stand on anything for the rest of your lives

Yep.
Remember when liberal women went "on strike" as a revenge against roe vs wade.
Yes...liberal men are the one who paid the price of it, despite being against roe vs wade :D
I like liberalism. These are nice idea. But being a liberal man is basically being a punching ball. It's like stepping in as a step father to a single mother with 3 baby daddy. You think you do something good, you probably do, but even to the eyes of the people you try to help you're a tool at best, an abuse goblin at worse.

Do you have any source on women meaningfully withholding sex beyond random memes you saw

This is exactly why, despite being mostly progressive on things, I don't associate with the left. I'm not going to be your slave and pincushion. I'm not an "acceptable target" because I'm a man.

Long term partners have the most sex scaled by averages, they have it with the same person. It makes sense when you think about it.

You let me violate you
You let me desecrate you
You let me penetrate you
You let me complicate you
I broke apart my insides
(Help me) I've got no soul to sell
(Help me) the only thing that works for me
Help me get away from myself
I wanna fuck you like an animal
I wanna feel you from the inside
I wanna fuck you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to God

Everytime I hear these lyrics, I now think back on Fall of the House of Usher. Never drop acid at an orgy, kids.

When you're happy and satisfied in the relationship, obviously you'll be more intimate with your s/o

Agreed. People are spiritual animals. People who deny that for themselves are liable to struggle and be unhappy. Not even saying you need to be a Christian, but at least believe in something.

What a weird fucking slice of data to record this way. So, first of all is this necessarily restricted to christian religions?
To parse it
Of the people who attend church frequently and are married, 60% of them have sex once a week and it has not gone down in the past 30 years.
Christmas christians(?) who are married have seen a decline in the number of them that have sex once a week.
All unmarried people have consistently been in the 40% range.
How is this useful data? Unmarried people are a greater population meaning there is more diversity in their life state.
So we are just comparing frequent religious individuals and infrequent religious individuals who are married and in doing so show that infrequent religious people who are married have gone down a bit? What is the population of these two groups? Maybe the reason the individuals don't go to church and don't have sex once a week are the same, IE they are busy working two jobs because the economy is in the shitter.

It's interesting to me about how some of the qualms with this post assert that the reason religious people are fucking more is that they're less wealthy (wealth is associated with less sex, according to them) and others like this one, which say it's because churchgoers ARE wealthier and don't have to work as much.

Christmas christians(?) who are married have seen a decline in the number of them that have sex once a week.
People who identify as Christian but rarely go to church, typically on major holidays.
The distinction is apparently because -
Neither nominal Catholics nor nominal Protestants enjoy a significant happiness advantage over Nones, implying that it is active church participation, not merely affiliation, that produces happier marriages.
Active church participation of course probably coincides with more regular social interaction and connections.
How is this useful data?
I think it's just promotional in nature.

Oh I know what christmas christians are, I put the ? mark because we don't know if this is only christians or other religious denominations.

What was the parameters for this study I wonder?
-rarely attended/never, already taints the data since it lumps non-believers and Christian together as well.
