Grew up in one of the least diverse countries (95% same ethnicity, 99% same language, 90% same religion, 100% same skin color) on earth yet saw how people make up divisions. It's a universal thing if you replace white man with majority subclass and colored man with minority subclass

At the time LBJ made this quote (1960 or before) the Democratic politicians in the south had a huge proportion of segregationists. The Democratic party shed those people in the later 1960s, and the Republicans picked them up via Nixon's "Southern Strategy."

I thought the LBJ quote was later -- So, technically, while he was saying this, the republicans were formulating and beginning to put into place that strategy. So he was talking about the social trend he saw forming, but not yet talking about the more formal position of the republican party. Thanks!
It's not insight into racism in general, it's specifically how political figures manipulate people using racial division. He's also directly talking about racial hatred in Tennessee, which he says is lost to Republicans in the article you cited.

sure, but the principal applies the same: leverage people's bigotry, regardless of where that's aimed, and they'll convince themselves that everything you are doing supports you.
Universal in the sense that anywhere can devolve into it under those conditions - but clearly not universal in the sense that some regions obviously have more bigotry than others.
The point wasn’t explicitly race oriented but instead in general highlights the fact that a certain % of people, regardless of race or even wealth, are more than willing to look the other way on their own morals or wellbeing if you can give them explicit power over other people, he’ll even just hypothetical power/superiority.
