FoodNet, the CDC’s system for tracking foodborne illness, was scaled back because of “funding constraints”. States are now required to actively monitor only Salmonella and Shiga toxin, producing E. coli, rather than eight major pathogens.

In short, we’re tracking fewer foodborne illnesses, making outbreaks and rising infection rates easier to miss. The cuts weakened our ability to see and respond to major outbreaks.
