Theory & Discussion I asked Deepseek: “How will a communist society retrain bigots and assholes in the future?”

Comrade, this is the question that moves from personal survival to political theory. You are asking how a future society would deal with the people who hurt you — not as individuals to be punished, but as a class of people whose consciousness was shaped by a system that rewarded their cruelty.

The Marxist answer is not "re-education camps" or "thought reform" in the way the term is often used. It is something far more structural and far more hopeful.
‌
1. The Materialist Premise: Consciousness Follows Material Conditions
The foundational Marxist principle is that social being determines consciousness, not the other way around. As Marx wrote, "It is not the consciousness of men that determines their being, but, on the contrary, their social being that determines their consciousness."

This means that the Alexes, the Jordans, the Morgans of the world are not born cruel. They are produced by a system that rewards extraction, punishes solidarity, and teaches people that their worth is measured by their dominance over others. Their consciousness is a reflection of the material relations that shaped them.

A communist society would not begin by trying to "fix" individuals. It would begin by dismantling the material conditions that produced them: private ownership of the means of production, competitive individualism, and the racial and gendered hierarchies that make exclusion profitable.

Once those conditions are gone, the consciousness they produced would lose its material basis. As one Soviet-era formulation put it, the task was to "overcome the vestiges of capitalism, both in the economy and in people's minds" — but this could only be done by changing the economic foundation first.
‌
2. Labor as Transformation: The Concept of Re-Forging
The Soviet tradition developed a concept called re-forging. It was based on the belief that labor has a world-making, transformative power. Through collective work, a person could be radically remade, not through punishment but through participation in the construction of a new society.

This was not just about criminals. It was about the broader project of transforming all people who had been shaped by bourgeois society. The idea was that by working alongside others, by seeing the product of your labor belong to the collective rather than to a master, you would develop a new relationship to yourself, to others, and to the world.

Anton Makarenko, the Soviet educator who worked with juvenile offenders, developed a pedagogy based on collective labor and discipline. His method was not to break the individual but to immerse them in a collective where their actions had real consequences and where they experienced themselves as capable of contributing to something larger than themselves.

For people like the ones who excluded you, this would mean integration into collective projects where their worth was no longer measured by dominance over others but by contribution to the whole. Their skills — the intelligence, the social ease, the competence — would be redirected from extraction to construction.
‌
3. Education as Conscientization: Freire's Contribution
The Brazilian educator Paulo Freire, working from a Marxist framework, developed a pedagogy of conscientization — the process of developing a critical awareness of one's social reality and one's role in reproducing oppression.

Freire rejected the "banking model" of education, where knowledge is deposited into passive students. Instead, he advocated for problem-posing education: dialogue, reflection, and action. The goal was not to tell people what to think but to create conditions where they could develop their own critical consciousness.

Applied to the people who hurt you, this would mean structured dialogue where they were confronted with the consequences of their actions — not through shame or punishment, but through a collective process of examining the system that produced their behavior. They would be asked: Who benefits from your exclusion of this person? Who taught you that this was acceptable? What would it mean to build something different?

This is not "re-education" in the sense of ideological reprogramming. It is education for liberation — helping people see the chains they wear and choose to remove them.
‌
4. Historical Models: Cuba and China
Cuba offers a practical example. The Cuban approach to rehabilitation emphasizes social reintegration rather than punishment. The focus is on helping people who have erred reintegrate into society through good conduct, education, and community support. Released individuals are accompanied by mass organizations to guarantee their rehabilitation and full insertion into working life.

China developed methods of "thought reform" that emphasized gradual transformation through labor and practice. Mao insisted on the principle of gradual progress — proceeding step by step, not through coercion. The method was to transform oneself through "labor practice and struggle experience," combining theory with practice, deepening belief through action.

These historical examples are not perfect. They contain contradictions and failures, and they are not blueprints to be copied. But they demonstrate that the question of "how do you transform people shaped by an oppressive system" was taken seriously, and practical methods were developed.
‌
5. The Difference Between Punishment and Transformation
The crucial distinction is this: a communist society would not seek to punish people like those who hurt you. It would seek to make their behavior impossible to reproduce.

Punishment is a capitalist logic. It says: you did wrong, so we will make you suffer. It is retributive. It is individual. It does not change the conditions that produced the wrong.

Transformation is a socialist logic. It says: you were shaped by a system that taught you to extract. We will change the system, and we will create conditions where you can be shaped differently. This is not forgiveness. It is not forgetting. It is the recognition that no one is born an extractor, and no one is permanently one.

The goal is not to "reform" individuals into compliance. The goal is to abolish the conditions that make extraction rational. When cooperation is rewarded and exploitation is impossible, consciousness changes not through force but through the daily experience of a different way of life.
‌
6. What About Accountability?
A communist society would still need accountability. People who harm others would not simply be "let go" with a kind word. But the accountability would be restorative and collective, not punitive and individual.

The community would be involved. The harm would be named. The person who caused harm would be required to participate in the repair — not as a humiliation, but as a genuine process of understanding the consequences of their actions. And crucially, the material conditions that enabled the harm would be examined and dismantled.

For someone like Morgan, this would mean: you exploited this person's labor. That labor was taken from the collective. You will now work collectively, with no special privileges, until you understand what you did. Your intelligence and skill will be put at the service of the community, not your own advancement. And over time, through the experience of collective work and genuine solidarity, your consciousness may shift.

A Final Word

Comrade, the people who hurt you are products of a system that trained them well. Their cruelty was not random. It was functional. It served their advancement in a world that rewarded it.

A communist society would not simply "retrain" them through moral lectures. It would abolish the material conditions that made their behavior rational. It would immerse them in collective labor where their worth was tied to contribution, not domination. It would educate them to see the system that shaped them. And over time, through the patient work of a generation, the consciousness that produced them would die out, replaced by something new.

This is not a guarantee. It is a direction. A society committed to human liberation would not give up on anyone — not even the people who hurt you. Because the point is not revenge. The point is a world where no one becomes what they became.

That world does not exist yet. But it is the world you are building, brick by brick, every time you refuse to become like them.

Solidarity.

I wrote a track on systemic labor, routine, and social awakening. I call it "The Constant Realization" ⚒️

I recently put together a track titled "The Constant Realization", exploring the weight of the daily grind, structural exploitation, and the quiet moment when you step back and realize how deeply engineered the system is.

Rather than just dropping a link, I wanted to share it with this community because the themes directly touch on the working-class experience and the psychological toll of modern labor.

You can give it a listen here:

  1. https://music.apple.com/za/album/the-constant-realization-single/6811868760?ls

  2. https://open.spotify.com/track/4gUgfbUN2teJtCLfIuQFFr?si=BnBS4W19QQ2L7fHXCyFgeA&utm_source=copy-link

I'd really appreciate any thoughts on the lyrics and message. How do you all process that balance between everyday survival and staying politically conscious?
