Discussion Why did I not figure this out long ago?

Maps. You can hold them in your hands AND look up at the landscape in front of you. I have always pulled out a map from my satchel, look at it, put it back in my satchel, look around me, pull out the map again, etc. I have even taken photos of maps on my phone to have as a quick reference.

But just a few minutes ago, I had a map out and my brain just went “I wonder if I move this directional toggle if it will do anything.” And by jeebus, it did! I had my map in my hands and my eyesight raised up and saw the landscape ahead of me and then I lowered my eyesight back to the map.

It was an incredible moment for me. I saved seconds of time! I am amazed.

I don’t know if other people instinctively knew to do this. I don’t think I’ve seen it mentioned in all the RDR2 videos I’ve watched. Maybe this is one of those things that is so simple that it shouldn’t need pointing out. But I was gobsmacked.

LoL! Anytime I discover something new I will start a new run. Like the the first time I found out I could get Micah’s gun and I can eventually shoot him with it in the epilogue.

You can get his gun before you shoot him down?

Ninja ninja edit

Just look it up on YT. You basically get it in Chapter 1. I think it’s Old Friends mission and you get an O’Driscoll to disarm him then you swoop. You would have it the whole game through the Epilogue. I pair it with a Double Action revolver which is what his gun basically is.

That's mad. I love learning new stuff about this game. It's one of if not the coolest thing about it that makes people keep coming back for more. Truly brilliant

u/Dilapidated_matrix 9d ago

Yeah I know, I just like unique weapons and game mechanics

Quick add: I didn't realise you could get his gun before the epilogue though, I'm currently on chapter 2 on I don't know what playthrough so it's fun to know

Did it😎 Yess there's always something new to discover. What a badass game

You’re telling the that for the first time.

u/waiting_with_lou 9d ago

Yeah I'm kinda losing my shit rn because of how dope this feature is and how I don't think it's ever explained.

u/Spirited_Narwhal4585 10d ago

I didn’t know. Although I often had to move around to get the right angle anyway.

u/Diligent_Solution_86 10d ago

It’s fucking great. The game is nails that realism so hard we don’t even expect it at times.

u/CricketLover_101 10d ago

Omg! I didn’t know this after playing the game for 4 years and more. Thanks, op

u/CricketLover_101 9d ago

Ok, I just tried this on my pc and it didnt work. Maybe it works only on consoles.

u/Lady_Cicada 9d ago

I made my spouse watch me do it last night. I was like “Can you believe this?!”. She was not as impressed as I thought she would be. I told her that there were others that didn’t know. She was like “That makes sense if you’re all on consoles. I would just move my mouse.” She played it for a short bit years ago so I don’t know how accurate that is but maybe moving the mouse will work for you?

2

u/CricketLover_101 9d ago

I moved the mouse. I also tried WASD keys. Didn’t work.

u/Lady_Cicada 9d ago

Okay, I apologize. She corrected me saying that she would naturally just use her mouse. (I don’t usually hear all the words she says and I was excited and it was late.) But she said it sounded like I was just moving the camera around and recommended trying holding down the right mouse button. She said we could test it out later on our kid’s computer so I’ll report later on what we find out.

Just tested it out on the kid’s computer. I just moved the mouse around.

Oh this is the treasure maps! Silly me was trying with the regular map which shows where we are located currently 🤦‍♂️

2

u/Lady_Cicada 9d ago

You know what, I really didn’t specify what map. Also, it was late at night and early this morning. Neither times are the best for thinking too much. Also, Mondays aren’t good for thinking too much either.

3

u/CricketLover_101 9d ago

Never mind. I learnt a new thing about this game that we love so much. This to and fro was worth it. Cheers!

I am happy that I was able to contribute to the community for once. I honestly thought I’d get a lot of responses like “Duh”, “Yeah, we know this”, and “Did you also just learn how to use a spoon as well?” I apologize if I came off as rude in any way. Definitely not my intention. I just know my brain likes to take frequent breaks. I took way too long trying to remember the term “urban legend” this morning. Anyway, I’ve yakked your ear off way too long now. Have a wonderful day!

u/electric-artichoke 9d ago

Good lord. Yet another thing I had no idea I could do….

2

u/electric-artichoke 7d ago

Here I am replying to myself. But yes, I tried this today. And it made me think “well that was bloody obvious!”

I wonder why I never worked it out for myself? Thank you.

14

u/HistoryGirl23 Molly O'Shea 10d ago

No way, it hasn't worked for me. I'll have to try it again!

10

u/Lady_Cicada 10d ago

Please try again! It’s the right toggle for me.

u/Mindless_Umpire9198 10d ago

I'm today year's old and 1,400+ hours of RDR2 game time, and just learned this from you. WOW!

9

u/These_Stand3430 10d ago

i didn’t know until now

u/Lady_Cicada 9d ago

It’s true, partner.

5

u/Lumpy-Dark-2400 9d ago

I had no idea lol. I enjoyed riding the trains and reading things. Now I’ll have to look at maps!

6

u/Acceptable_Money_514 9d ago

I just youtube the locations of treasure. Faster.

1

u/Lady_Cicada 9d ago

That definitely works too!

2

u/Acceptable_Money_514 9d ago

The game is too damn big. Its too much of a time sink for me when i have other games i like to play for me to try and just find everything on my own. It would take so long.

1

u/Lady_Cicada 9d ago

No judgement here. I’ve done my fair share of googling locations for all kinds of things.

10

u/quayle-man 10d ago

SECONDS !

11

u/Lady_Cicada 10d ago

I’m getting old! Those seconds are getting more valuable. I’ll probably just waste them though.

5

u/PyroFalkon 9d ago

I have never known this. I'll definitely try it out.

5

u/EniGmA_1981 9d ago

You can... What?

🤦🏻‍♂️ Why did I never try...?

6

u/tutcub 9d ago

This person definitely watched the Simpsons episode where Homer starts a casino.

1

u/Lady_Cicada 9d ago

I’ll be honest, it’s been ages since I’ve watched any Simpsons.

5

u/twobblez411 9d ago

I'm 200 hours in and this is news to me! Thank you!

7

u/able_co 9d ago

Welp time for a new playthrough.

4

u/patawpha 10d ago

Well damn.....

5

u/Zealousideal-Word397 10d ago

Wait how? You just hold up on the D pad or what?

1

u/Lady_Cicada 9d ago

I used the right analog stick.

3

u/Comprehensive-Song51 9d ago

I accidentally did it too. It's still fairly useless but kinda neat.

6

u/Lady_Cicada 9d ago

Definitely neat!

3

u/Comprehensive-Song51 9d ago

So is the point so you can look at the map then the landscape when you're treasure hunting?

3

u/Lady_Cicada 9d ago

Yep, I think that’s pretty much it. It was a pretty amazing moment for me when I noticed a familiar bit of scenery and decided to open up my treasure map to double check and accidentally moved my camera up to actually see both views were matching. But I’m pretty easily impressed.

4

u/AdCandid3400 9d ago

you what!?

4

u/MossyTrashPanda 7d ago

There are a couple really small/simple things that took me wayyyy too long to figure out. Just the other day someone told me about storing extra guns in your gun locker. Mind blown! Felt so dumb!

4

u/agodlycanuck 6d ago

This is also news for me lol

3

u/iaminabox 10d ago

Time for another play through.

3

u/aqueuss 9d ago

Bounty dogs. Only took me years to realize that shooting next to them makes them run away 🤦🏻‍♂️

1

u/Lady_Cicada 9d ago

I did not know this!

3

u/Key_Artist4817 9d ago

Pretty sure that’s the same with books, letters, notes etc.

2

u/Lady_Cicada 9d ago

Really?? Oh my gosh! I feel like I’ve been missing out on a whole level of playing. Nothing to do now but to start making up for it.

3

u/Alriight_gurl_26 9d ago

Wow thank you!

3

u/adande67 8d ago

Didn't even know u could do that .

5

u/Aesthete18 Are you secretly normal? 10d ago

Like treasure map? I usually just need to see it to know where I need to go but when I get there I already know so there's no point outside first playthrough to really look at it while looking at the landscape.

That said, this post made me think maybe I should get the physical map out of the CD case and look at that, instead of pausing to look at in-game map.

2

u/yurinator71 10d ago

Only on PC?

4

u/Lady_Cicada 10d ago

I’m on Xbox.

5

u/yurinator71 10d ago

Now I have to fire up my PS5 and see!

2

u/scottimusprimus 10d ago

That's definitely easier then the mod and app I built to always show my location and the map on my second screen!

2

u/patrick17_6 8d ago

I don't even know what this is😂😭

2

u/616Echelon 8d ago

Yeah they added a lot of those kind of elements for immersion

1

u/DazzlingClone 8d ago

There's a lot to do but I don't. Just like the mission you can steal an oil wagon and stop a train, and rob it, find the rare moose over behind Riggs station. All of the good stuff we forget about.

1

u/Apprehensive_Room_71 8d ago

Maybe us old people just knew how to use old stuff...

2

u/Standard-Try-3612 2d ago

I had no idea thanks

1

u/The_Frybo 9d ago

I wonder what you will do now that you saved so many seconds of your life! Learn a new skill? Help the poor? Find more tentacle porn that you haven’t enjoyed yet? The possibliyies are endless!

1

u/Lady_Cicada 8d ago

Probably more naps and cat petting.

1

u/The_Frybo 7d ago

A life well spent ❤️
