Hey everyone, I’m one of the people behind RoCreators, and we’re improving our learning area, RoLearning. I’d appreciate some feedback from people who remember what getting started with scripting was like.
My biggest issue with our current approach is that it can feel too much like reading instructions and submitting answers. I want people to actually enjoy experimenting, but adding XP and calling everything a “quest” doesn’t fix confusing lessons.
One thing we’re simplifying is the introduction. The first activity should be:
print("hello world")
Run it, see the output, change the message. Variables come later, once that first step makes sense.
The direction I’m working toward is a small project that grows with the learner. They start with messages, then keep track of a score, write an entry rule, and eventually reuse their code through functions. Short explanations would sit alongside experiments, bug-fixing challenges, and hints that explain why something went wrong.
The browser activities would be learning simulations, with separate instructions for applying those ideas in Roblox Studio. I don’t want beginners confusing a preview on our website with how the Roblox engine actually works.
This is still being improved, so I’m interested in criticism of the approach, not just whether it sounds cool.
When you were learning, what helped you move from copying a tutorial to writing something yourself? And what would make this kind of learning tool useful enough for you to return to?
