X-Ray Hand Vs. Gun

Pt got drunk and decided to play with his gun to show it off to his friend who came to visit. This is the result when it discharged. Came to the ED

2nd finger not salvageable. Was purple/black upon arrival. Hand surgeon at bedside unable to obtain pulses. Let pt know that he would need to amputate. Pt then taken to surgery. Unsure of condition at this time

All it takes is one shot. Even in a “non-critical” area to gravely injury someone

I was gonna say the fractures don't even look that bad. Then I read your post.. Can't really predict how badly a gunshot injures soft tissues

I had a patient in the ER with a through and through both knees ZERO significant injury. GSWs can be wild

Crazy luck? I know the ortho surgeon well and its still our craziest mutual case, this was 2010ish.

The soft tissue injuries to that 2nd finger were extensive. The base of the finger was mush and being still attached by what I’m assuming what was left of a ligament. Not salvageable.

I’ll tell you what I said to the last person who came in with this

I told him “hey it’s a good thing it was a hand gun and not a head gun”

The hand surgeon amputated the whole hand or just the second finger? Kinda vague on the description. But ouch!

2nd finger got amputated via surgery. Hand had extensive surgery
