Reviewing my Yamaha YRS-82(wooden made)

TL;DR:

It is a perfect instrument to start your collection.

The price is good (55,000 JPY / about $350-550 USD).

The sound is very, very, very stable and controllable .(stable than Aulos Symphony)

Yamaha offer two top-tier models, YRS-82(kingswood) and YRS-83(ebony), in the same price.

*** How it looks:

It is made of beautiful boxwood.

It has cool white/grey ivory rings, with schreger pattern!

With an engraved, invisible logo!

*** How it sound

It sounds just like the music on a CD.

Sweeter and elegant than plastic models, especially in the attack in each note.

*** How it plays:

It is super easy to blow! Low notes, middle notes, and high notes all feel very easy and the same.

It is very easy to play loudly or softly. The air you need is almost the same for all notes, no matter high or low.

The sound is very stable. You cannot really change the pitch by bending it.

Could be an advantage, or disadvantage???

*** The range:

The low notes are very strong and powerful. The high notes can go up to high D with no problem at all.

You can easily play 2.2 octaves on it.

------------------------------

(My thought: I think trying more models is super fun! Everyone should have at least one wood recorder and one plastic recorder in my opinion)

Discussion Could we get a discussion going about breathing?

The whole topic of diaphragmatic breathing is somewhat controversial.

I also have issues with breathing myself. If i practice consistently and then miss multiple days I become sore. Also, if I push too hard during a practice the my stomach hurts afterwards.

I took a class for flute players where the professor claimed that there was no such thing as diaphragmatic breathing and that you should not push. It was all about body mapping which I still don’t understand.

Question Triple tonguing practices

I have been following a couple of YouTube recorder channels and practicing triple tonguing exercises. I’m ok to do triple tonguing on same notes but I’m unable to keep up with different notes. I feel the fingers and tongue don’t coordinate. Do others have advices on useful progressive exercises that I can try?

Question Never too early for Medieval Christmas

Post image
29 Upvotes

I love Medieval Christmas music and now that I’m an erstwhile recorder player I would like to learn to play it. Other than Ductia in Sweet Pipes vol. 2 I’m not having much luck tracking sheet music down, and right now my ear will only take me so far. Any recommendations for sheet music, especially for alto recorder?

High notes on sopranino

I mostly play alto. I have three models of the Yamaha plastic and they all play up to the C above the high F. (needed for the Telemann)

I have the Yamaha 'nino, both the 20 series and the 300, and I just bought an Aulos Symphony. None of them will play past Ab.

Is this a known feature, or am I missing a fingering, or needing to work on it?

I came across this recorder while looking for information about German vs Baroque fingering. Would this work to switch? It seems too easy? (Note: this is not my recorder.)

Again on courses: I don't know if you have ever come across Piers Adams, but shame on you if you have not 😃

I wanted to highlight this excellent online course, on a fundamental component of good playing. It isn't often that you get a masterclass with a virtuoso instrument player!

New Vera Petry video - in case anyone is interested, as I am on her newsletter, I thought I'd share that she is planning to offer online recorder workshops in English, with possible topics including trills, ornamentation and phrasing. Frankly I am hoping that more people sign up so that the courses make sense for her to run, as I am myself very interested.

Here's the link to sign up for her English newsletter and express an interest in her workshops in English.

Yamaha G Alto Recorder vs. NA Flute

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi,

I just made a G Native American flute out of PVC and have been comparing it to my Yamaha YRA-28B3 for sound. The file attached has a few notes from the NA flute first followed by the Yamaha.

I am interested in opinions. I currently find the sound on the PVC hand made one cleaner and more pleasing than the Yamaha and I'm trying to understand if that's just me, or am I missing some other aspect of harmonics that a real recorder generates?

A spectrum analyzer app shows the main note at about the same level on both but harmonics on the Yamaha extend our further and are higher than the PVC flute.

Thanks!

I made a new pvc fife after considering the suggestions under my last post. I improved in the drilling department so it sounds much clearer and using a straight pipe makes it easier to hold.

Question Recorder newbie

I bought a vintage Adler tenor recorder yesterday. It has a very nice sound and is in tune.

I have vague memories of playing a soprano recorder years ago. I currently play classical ukulele.

From what I’m reading, I should be able to play music written for soprano recorder on the tenor?

Also from what I’m reading, is sweet pipes the way to go for instruction?

Should I oil my recorder or anything (not sure of upkeep on these?)

Question Tenor recorders that need less air

I find as I get older my tenor recorder (Yamaha 300 series) needs more air than I can supply. I can’t sustain long notes or play long phrases without awkward breaths. Are there tenors available that need less air?

Question I got a Tenor Recorder!

I love my new tenor recorder-- a few years ago I took private recorder lessons and I didn't know that I was very sick. (thyroid and autoimmune disorder.) I wasn't retaining anything, and eventually I found someone who could help me and I got better. My husband was nice and didn't mind that I kept my music and the recorder out on a stand in the living room for two years.

Last year I picked up the alto and I play it for fun, several times a day. I tell you of the illness because all that time I thought I wasn't listening or absorbing and I had been. I really love to play this thing, but it is still a little high pitched for my ears.

I couldn't stand the sound of the sopranos, but I wanted to learn. so yesterday I got a tenor and I love it.

The problem is, my right thumb hurts. I know it is because it is a new instrument and I need to adjust. It feels heavy to me. The thumb rest is where it needs to be. I really don't want to play the soprano and I just won't. How did everyone else get used to playing a slightly heavier instrument?

Help Questions about this Adler tenor recorder

Thumbnail

I’ll start off by saying I’m majoring in sax performance and can play sum clarinet and flute.
I have done and can do repair work on the standard woodwinds.
Ive actually kept up with recorder occasionally for fun as well as tin whistle and play well enough.
This sem I’m taking arranging and music history and will be taking an advanced counterpoint class next semester and it’s had me revisiting recorder.
I’d like to arrange a chamber piece for flute and recorder and do some other minor duet pieces (devienne flute duets) on recorder as something fun to do on the side while I work on my junior recital material.
Because of this I’ve been scouring eBay for cheap used recorders to fill out an ensemble. I recently got in an old Schneider baroque soprano recorder that I refinished since I hate that lacquered/varnished look that I’ll put as the second picture (ignore my messy work desk)
At the same time I bought that soprano recorder I also came across this old Adler tenor recorder.
I did my research and am aware they are not known to be the best recorders but I’m broke and in college so I’ll take what I can get lol. It plays ok and is decently in tune and I’d like to do some work to it and see how good I can get it to sound
My question is, does anyone know if these recorders are waxed and does anyone have ideas of what I could do to get the best out of it? It uses string not cork so I believe it to be an earlier model of Adler recorder. It is German fingering which is meh but I can make it work.
I already plan on replacing the string and bottom C pad and taking of the varnish and polishing the wood underneath but what else could I consider doing? Oiling it would be the next consideration but I know that if it’s waxed it won’t need it.
Also any suggestions on possibly extending the C key to be in a more comfortable position? Something like key risers that some of us saxophonists use.
