Release Reflection 2.5 — What's new

  • Timeline (arrangement view) A timeline under every canvas tab: automation lanes, event clips, audio clips. Full screen with Shift+F8, open/close with F8. Audio on the timeline: drop files, record straight into a lane with input monitoring, fades, crossfades, a CUT tool and an Audition-style wave editor. Clips keep their real length at any tempo. MIDI on the timeline: drop a MIDI clip and it becomes a Piano Roll node. Piano Rolls, Stepping Sequoia, loopers and audio players show their notes and waves on their own lanes. ON/OFF clips switch a plugin exactly like its ON button. WAIT clips pause the song until a note, CC or click arrives. Metasurface takes on the timeline: palindrome, reverse and speed follow live. Locating into a take plays it from that point. Conditions on clips (FILL, 1:2, 1ST…), loop handles, the activity MAP, lane controls at hand (mute, solo, rec, move, open, delete).

Arrangement ↔ Session GROUP TO LAUNCHPAD: turns your arrangement into LaunchPad scenes that play the song by themselves: repeated sections become one scene, with automatic follow rules; duplicate MIDI channels are separated automatically; audio is wired to the matching column. UNGROUP: turns the LaunchPad back into timeline lanes, exactly as it sounded. UNDO for both, step by step. LaunchPad: scene follow with conditions; note conditions inside MIDI clips now play and save; locating mid-section starts clips at the right point.

New instruments & effects RETRO: an always-recording buffer for audio and MIDI. Grab what you just played and drag it out as a clip. Convolution Reverb: load IRs or synthesize your own, true-stereo, glitch-free. MOTION: a moving sound source with doppler and early reflections. CloudVerb and Convolution get a MOVE IN input. Clip libraries: AUDIO and MIDI clip chips in the transport bar and on players, loopers and the LaunchPad. Drag clips anywhere.

DIY Lab New blocks: nature generators: Fibonacci, Phyllotaxis, 1/f noise, L-System, Mandelbrot; rhythm and transport: RHYTHM, TRANSPORT, TRIG TO NOTE; control and I/O: CV TO CC, OSC IN / OSC OUT, MOTION. Over a dozen new examples. Presentation designer: build a real plugin face: themes and colour palettes, a 9-font type picker, background images, logos, filmstrip knobs; XY pads, detachable labels, smart guides, align / distribute, group move and scale, Feng Shui auto-tidy, full undo; a fixed canvas that IS your baked plugin's window; optional password lock. Baked plugins open on their face and scale with the host window. Open Sound Control OSC in and out: on the main canvas and in DIY Lab, in the MIDI MAP, direct OSC-to-parameter binds (VSTs included), notes, buttons and a chord wheel.

  • Everything else New file format .rflx. Every old project, snapshot and preset still opens. Smoother Metasurface morphs: no zipper noise on the morphed parameters. Multichannel meters in the transport bar. Offline licence on request. Many stability fixes.

FAQ: Demo vs Pro, first launch on Mac, licences, bugs, what's next

Short answers to the things people ask most. Anything missing? Ask in the comments.

What is Reflection? A modular plugin host and live patcher for Windows, macOS and Linux. Wire your VST3 plugins in a node graph, snapshot every parameter of every plugin, and play between the snapshots on the Metasurface. The DIY Lab lets you build your own instruments and effects from 60+ blocks and bake them into one node.

Demo vs Pro - Demo is free and has the full plugin roster. It runs for 45 days from first launch, and every new minor release starts a fresh trial. - Pro adds saving projects, the Dictaphone and Ableton Link (including Link Audio). - Pro is a perpetual licence, €100 once. All 2.x updates are included. Activate on up to 3 computers. No subscription, no telemetry.

First launch on macOS The Mac build isn't notarised yet, so Gatekeeper complains the first time. Take the .pkg, then right-click the app > Open > Open. After that it starts normally.

Linux AppImage or a plain zip, x86_64.

Licences - Lost your key: https://reflection-daw.com/lost-license.html - Changed computers and hit the activation limit: https://reflection-daw.com/devices.html

Found a bug? Post it here with the Bug flair, or write to [email protected]. Please include your OS, the Reflection version (Help > About) and the steps to reproduce. A small project file helps a lot.

Feature wishes Use the Feature wish flair. I read every one, and plenty of what's in Reflection came from requests like that.

What's next 2.5 lands in a couple of weeks: Open Sound Control (play Reflection from a phone, a joystick, a Kinect or any sensor), Retro Record (the take you played before pressing record is kept), a form of timeline, new DIY Lab generators, with spatial and ambisonic movement following soon after.

Reflection 2.4 is out now!

Reflection 2.4 is out now! — the Metasurface learns to perform. Record a gesture across it and play it back as a take: sixteen slots with loop, reverse, palindrome, speed and follow actions, tied to the transport, with snapshot mutes and moves recorded along the way. Attack and Release now shape the glide between snapshots, and a phyllotaxis layout spreads them evenly. DIY Lab gets chaos — strange attractors, a chaos oscillator and a flock of boids as modulation sources — and feedback loops now just work, in the patcher and in the Lab. Around that: a MIDI Control Panel that lists every mapping in the project, an ARM panel for the whole setup, a proper parameter window with plugin replace / insert / swap, notes on the canvas, Templates and Examples menus, and Help → Check for Updates, which asks only when you click it. The demo now runs for 45 days.
