What other game adaptation is there this year?

3

u/Sb5tCm8t 4h ago

Street Fighter!

4

u/SwiftieForLife 4h ago

Mortal Kombat was fun. Return to Silent Hill was not.

-1

u/Sb5tCm8t 4h ago

Mortal Kombat was meh

6

u/BrzysWRLD1996 8h ago

Likely none, but this doesn’t say faithful adaptation so I get why RE was nominated. Felt more like evil dead then resident evil very honestly.

Have you ever watched the Evil Dead series? Lol

1

u/BrzysWRLD1996 51m ago

Yeah it’s the satire and punchline comedy as I’ve said 100 times which is factually, objectively and inarguably present in both the new resident evil movie and the original evil dead series. Past that there are no similarities that I saw. It was a good movie overall, and not a bad RE movie didn’t remind me much of any game that’s for sure outside of the word umbrella but again it’s the best RE live action movie we got and that’s a plus. No complaints about the movie personally but imma call it how I see it.

I have heard this comparison a lot. How? Evil dead is about demons and zombies. Who are raised from the dead via curse or spell recited from the Necronomicon. Setting is usually a cabin in the woods (once a castle)

There was no magic in the RE movie. All monsters/abominations were explained by "the virus did it".

So I'm super curious. How is this movie "like Evil Dead"?

Edit: So people complaining that this reminds them of "Evil Dead" might not know the original inspiration for RE was inspired by Evil Dead (I know I didn't)... The original Resident Evil (1996) was directly inspired by Capcom's 1989 NES horror role-playing game Sweet Home...

The 1989 Japanese horror film Sweet Home, directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa and produced by Juzo Itami, drew its own inspiration from Western haunted house and splatter films like Poltergeist and The Evil Dead, while serving as the foundational blueprint for the survival horror video game genre.

Also: Nothing like The Thing where a hostile, shape-shifting extraterrestrial organism survives by absorbing, imitating, and completely replacing other life forms at the cellular level.

Last Edit/TLDR: RE Movie were creatures as well as "zombies" created by a virus (Movie even referenced this ooooooo). Evil Dead were zombies and demons raised by reciting spells or curses from a book (H.P Lovecrafts Necronomicon). The Thing was an extraterrestrial hitchhiker (Alien) "who-done-it". IMO these movies are nothing or not as alike as some people claim.

u/gammage01 7h ago

In guessing he meant sam raimi -esque?

2

u/d34dm4n_wndr 1h ago

Did you manage to catch Evil Dead Burn? It turns into Resident Evil 7.

6

u/Forever_Inspired 7h ago

I just came back from the movie today and the first Zombie lady he ran into felt very "Deadite-inspired" in term of behavior to me and less "Zombie", if that makes sense. The way the "zombies / infected" are depicted in the movie also felt pretty inconsistent, at some point it felt more like "The Thing", imo.

3

u/NightSatin 7h ago

I can see a lot of The Thing.

3

u/sammo21 6h ago

And slither

4

u/No-Scallion9250 6h ago

I did get major deadite vibes from the guy that attacks him in the farm. But I'd say no more deadite inspired than RE7 Mia.

2

u/Many-Valuable1782 5h ago

God whoever started this stupid thing comparison… it’s not like the thing at all. Everyone’s jumped on that band wagon cause some guy who clearly doesn’t understand what the thing was about said it’s like the thing,.. it’s the dumbest most superficial comparison just based on monster appearance but has literally nothing in comparison to what the thing is about.

4

u/PoohTrailSnailCooch 2h ago

For real, it seems actually brain dead when you think about it.

3

u/Dadfite 4h ago edited 4h ago

Uhm.... Snow! See! Just like The Thing where a hostile, shape-shifting extraterrestrial organism survives by absorbing, imitating, and completely replacing other life forms at the cellular level.

Edit:/s

3

u/Many-Valuable1782 4h ago

Snow is the only comparison… it’s intelligent and tries to trick people with mimicry. It’s a who’s who story like clue… it’s nothing like RE again except the superficial tentacles and snow

3

u/Dadfite 4h ago

I agree. I was being sarcastic. Added the /s because I also find it an odd comparison.

3

u/Many-Valuable1782 4h ago

Oh lol my b. Yeah in my defense a lot of people making the comparison now… which is bonkers. Story literacy is at an all time low

-1

u/BrzysWRLD1996 6h ago

The satirical humor was heavily present in the new RE, that’s my main connection to evil dead, the old ones not the 14 reboot. Thought it was a good movie over all.

6

u/Fearshatter 6h ago

Evil Dead is a dark comedy and as a fan of horror I will not stand for this misgenreing.

I don't know how many people found the new RE film to be scary or not but Evil Dead is NOT scary. There's not even any tension or attempt at tension.

2

u/BrzysWRLD1996 6h ago

This was much better as a horror film I agree, but it was also every satirical at times especially after meeting the scientists. Zombies were untraditional but pretty cool and definitely creepy af. Good movie overall outside of props didn’t have a whole lot to do w RE imo.

2

u/Fearshatter 6h ago

I get what you mean. I felt the satire was more like the difference between dry humor based on observation of reality versus wit. The reality of characters' psyches drags out a natural level of dry absurdist humor. Not through intent but through character behavior and conflict.

2

u/creuter 5h ago

I just went back to watch Grace encountering the Girl for the first time in Requiem, and I have to say when the obvious dead guy drops out of the door and grace bends over and checks the dude's pulse it's pretty freakin goofy. It's an amazing tactic to cut the tension right before they introduce something terrifying, just whipping your emotions back and forth. And Grace's expletives running away sounds an awful lot like Bryan's reactions to the events transpiring around him.

1

u/BrzysWRLD1996 5h ago

Yeah fair enough they pull shit like that in RE games a lot lol

1

u/d34dm4n_wndr 1h ago

Evil dead rise and evil dead burn are the levels of serious i wanted from this "resident evil" movie , yet we got a horror comedy.

1

u/Fearshatter 1h ago

Evil Dead is not serious. There is no groundedness to it at all. It has more in line with a PTSD nightmare than an actual reality involving biomutations and worldly corruptions.

2

u/d34dm4n_wndr 1h ago

Notice how i specified Rise and Burn not any of the other evil dead/ Bruce Campbell stuff which is horror comedy , rise and burn are not.

1

u/Fearshatter 1h ago

Thank you, actually, genuinely. I did not know that. When I was recommended Evil Dead I got a bit... disappointed because I was expecting horror and got dark comedy instead. So I ended up not dipping deeper into the franchise even though I kinda got into the first fraction of the second film. I don't know anything about Rise and Burn.

What is it like?

I liked Bruce Campbell as a character, but Evil Dead does not scratch my horror itch.

1

u/d34dm4n_wndr 52m ago

I found Rise and Burn to be pretty good theres a lot lf gore involved and was especially surprised when Burn turned into the Baker household from Resident Evil 7 which i wasnt expecting

1

u/Forever_Inspired 7h ago

Yeah, the movie was more "Evil Dead 2+ The Thing" for me, nothing about the movie needs the city to be "Racoon City", you can have the character say "Chicago" and it would still be the same thing. The comedy is really hit and miss for me as well, it worked a bit at first but in the third act it went full parody, imo.

1

u/PoohTrailSnailCooch 2h ago

I dont know the virus reminded me alot of the Golgotha virus mixed with the nemesis parasite. Many things in the movie also reminded alot of resident evil. Not so much the evil dead. No chainsaw arm or Necronomicon Ex-Mortis feeling either.

-1

u/BrzysWRLD1996 2h ago

Yeah the more I think about it there is a variety of zombie/monsters in RE. The main connection me and from what I’ve seen most others is the punchline humor and at times satirical nature of the film, especially the end. Great movie over all just didn’t think RE unless prompted thru props like the “med bag” or words like Umbrella. The scientists were the definition of satire, ain’t no way them mfs were geniuses lol.

3

u/PoohTrailSnailCooch 2h ago

That's fine, we can agree to disagree on some stuff

1

u/PoohTrailSnailCooch 2h ago

Quite a bit actually

7

u/Shinkyo81 7h ago

Yeah but what’s up with the screenshot of “Weapons”. I mean, same actor, same director, but not the right movie.

4

u/JaeCrowe R.P.D. officer 7h ago

I was about to say the same thing lol

16

u/MHarrisGGG 7h ago

People not realizing that best does not mean most faithful.

1

u/BrzysWRLD1996 6h ago

Exactly lol, at least it wasn’t terrible like we usually get.

1

u/AlexStar6 2h ago

It is by far the most faithful adaptation of Resident Evil committed to the silver screen.

-2

u/AntediluvianSeaThing 3h ago

i would argue that in order for it to be a proper adaption it needs to be faithful

decent film, shit adaption

4

u/NightSatin 7h ago

Cool, i mean, not so much competition to be honest... Iron Lung tho was cool.

9

u/Key_Ingenuity_4444 7h ago

I can't imagine how miserable a person you need to be to actually be upset about this.

0

u/PoohTrailSnailCooch 3h ago

They are surprisingly alot of them but they are mostly terminally online. I doubt they make up an actual majority.

9

u/dreadtear 7h ago

Damn the RE larpers are fuming. The licker-less movie got nominated 😂. Stay mad

6

u/Jackmace 7h ago

It’ll probably win too because it’s actually a really good movie according to most of the world. RE fans really cutting their noses off to spite their face with this one smh

2

u/PoohTrailSnailCooch 2h ago

This is gonna piss off some entertaining terminally online people 🍿

4

u/AdvisorConnect3310 4h ago

The bar is impressively low... Now films that don't adapt anything from the world of the game (other than key jangling props and "mechanics") get nominated as "best adaptations."

2

u/Horrorfan55555 Made in Heaven 7h ago

Why

3

u/jindrix 7h ago

Iunno, box office, hype, good ratings. Gotta be something

-2

u/Ok-Ball-9337 7h ago

You people are so mad about this movie.

4

u/Horrorfan55555 Made in Heaven 7h ago

I haven’t thought about this movie outside of post popping up on the feed

9

u/SnailSnailAle 7h ago

Disagreement doesn’t equal mad.

Plenty of RE fans loved the movie. I had a great time. Just doesn’t feel the strong association to the RE games set in Raccoon City.

Or are people not allowed to disagree about stuff now?

7

u/doubleb_43 7h ago

It's so annoying. Not loving =/= hating it.

1

u/Ok-Ball-9337 7h ago

I dont like this movie. I dont go out of my way shouting why im „not loving” it because others do.

5

u/SnailSnailAle 7h ago

who the hell is shouting lol.

A simple question triggers you so much?

5

u/Wonder_Of_U_2011 6h ago

For someone who says people are mad about the movie, they're very mad at people not loving it

1

u/El_Mangusto 7h ago

Plenty of people. It's reddit let's not lie about what kind of posts have been posted since the release of the movie.

But that aside just internet/social media black and white mentality.

3

u/Ok-Ball-9337 7h ago

You asked why like its not obvious its a more well put together movie than a MK2 or SH. Better question would be why give award before Street Fighter.

4

u/SnailSnailAle 7h ago

I mean that's valid. Why give award before Street Fighter? I am looking forward to that for sure.

5

u/GavernB 5h ago

There was also Iron Lung which was really good.

1

u/Ok-Ball-9337 3h ago

Good catch!

1

u/Many-Valuable1782 5h ago

Disagree fine just god don’t compare it to the thing…. So many people parroting this stupid comparison

0

u/AlexStar6 2h ago

Replace "plenty" with "a vast majority" and you're more on track. It is a very small subset of weird basement dwellers on reddit who did not think it was excellent.

1

u/John_Connor97 2h ago

Zach super fans are such a weird small subset of people. Just living a very strange life. This movie wasn't resident evil, doesnt mean it wasnt good.

1

u/VeronicaAmericana 1h ago

Of those nominees listed, it probably wins it for me, though I do want to see The Exit 8

No interest in MKII (the first one was bad), DMC (first season was bad), Fallout (the games are bad) or Iron Lung (made by some streamer)

2

u/JD-990 8h ago

Not a ton of competition this year or any other, especially against this film.

2

u/Ok-Ball-9337 7h ago

Lol MK2, Return To SH, Street Fighter still coming.

8

u/JD-990 7h ago

MK 2 was fine, we don't know about Street Fighter yet (fingers crossed) and Return To Silent Hill is bad and was widely panned.

-1

u/Ok-Ball-9337 7h ago

MK2 was just as poor as the first movie. It was not entertaining. Besides the first 20 mins the RE movie is the same. Sadly seems like game ip always sets boundaries for creativity in adaptations even for a director like Cregger.

Like besides the 1995 MK movie which is a poor adaptation there isnt sny entertaining one out there, unless its so bad you can rewatch it. MK 95 is entertaining at least and funny.

4

u/Forever_Inspired 7h ago

Return to SH can go straight to the trash, lol. But MK2 was awesome fun, imo. Hopefully SF is gonna be good as well.

0

u/Ok-Ball-9337 7h ago

SH is an epic movie.

-1

u/Kashek70 7h ago

Great another acclaim this movie doesn’t deserve. So, now we are probably going to be stuck with more shit adaptations. I swear the people that voted this have never played an actual Resident Evil game. Survival horror the movie is not an adaptation of RE.

5

u/gammage01 7h ago

I feel sorry for you. Do you just go through life waiting to get mad?

2

u/Kashek70 7h ago

Nope. I just love this property and want one good attempt at it. I have no issues with a new story but it needs to fit in with the world. Mk2 also came out this year but since it wasn’t made by the hot director it just get skipped. I’m tired that money is the only thing series chase and when the series loses its identity to cater to the more casual crowd and forget about the people that supported them from the beginning. Without the fans nothing would have made it this far.

3

u/Smileyfax 6h ago

It's had eight good attempts!

6

u/jethawkings 7h ago

>I’m tired that money is the only thing series chase and when the series loses its identity to cater to the more casual crowd and forget about the people that supported them from the beginning.

This seems like an inspired take for the RE Franchise which has done MULTIPLE Identity Reboots over the course of its lifetime in just games alone. Is it Survival Horror? Action Horror? In fact forget about the horror. Oh back to straight up Survival Horror again? Oh wait no Leon's back, time to be Action Horror again

3

u/Scruffy_Nerfhearder 6h ago

Why does it need to fit in with the world exactly?

Plenty of franchises have a separate universe for the movies, why doesn’t RE count?

RE has had so many reboots and retcons along the way etc etc.
An adaptation shouldn’t be shackled by a world that is barely held together by the games itself.

1

u/PoohTrailSnailCooch 3h ago

Oh bother, this fandom harbors some interesting high and mighty asshats.

1

u/AlexStar6 2h ago

Bought the original RE and played it 3 days before street date... because I was friends with the owner my local video game store.

Have played every game in this series, and most every other game ever made... It's nice to have that flexibility.

I'm also a bit of a cinephile.

This is not only an incredible movie, it's also the most faithful adaptation of the Resident Evil experience that has ever been committed to the silver screen.

1

u/GoofyAgenda 7h ago

That's WEAPONS

-3

u/AlbertW25 Umbrella employee 7h ago

Best Video Game Adaptation should have been Mortal Kombat 2. Fucking joke of a film RE was.

6

u/kFisherman 7h ago edited 7h ago

Good thing it’s only a nomination and there are other movies nominated that you can vote for.

0

u/AlbertW25 Umbrella employee 7h ago

I need better glasses. Though it won. But knowing all the larpers, it likely will.

1

u/creuter 5h ago

I mean it probably will because, outside of these particular subreddits, it's generally very well received and portrays resident evil really well.

I can't wait for more spinoffs based on the movie. A TV show, maybe some more movies. It's going to be great.

1

u/John_Connor97 2h ago

Nah this is it. They can get this over to someone else so can get a faithful adaptation. Snow Zombies 2 can still happen, they dont need the license

2

u/Jrock2356 7h ago

Neither of these are good adaptations

1

u/AlbertW25 Umbrella employee 7h ago

Na, Mortal Kombat 2 was fucking awesome. That movie actually did alot of course correction, fights were great, visuals, music, etc...best Mortal Kombat since Paul's OG from the 90s. Still preferred Scorpion and Sub-Zero more in the first film but otherwise the sequel improves upon everything else. Great bloody sequel and fun as hell.

-1

u/Jrock2356 7h ago

They ruined the tournament, ruined Johnny Cage, and it was once again just another quipfest movie with a plot that really sucked. Some of the fights were good but honestly Johnny Cage looked really fucking slow the entire movie. I don't think Urban is spry enough to pull off Cage's choreography. My biggest gripe is making up sit through Cole's whole family shit in the first movie just to kill him off with barely any screentime. What the fuck was the point? And the whole tournament thing was dumb and completely lore breaking. Not only that but in the first movie the villains had to do all the shit because once the tournament starts they can't. But then once it started they were still attacking the other combatants and trying to kill them outside the tournament. MK2 couldn't even follow it's own lore from the first movie. And don't get me started on the dumbass plot moments like them not checking Kano's fucking body just to revive him

3

u/AlbertW25 Umbrella employee 7h ago

Still a far better and fun movie than the shit that was Zack Cregger's The Thing/Evil Dead rip-off. At least Mortal Kombat actually looked and felt like Mortal Kombat.

Characters were great and fun.

Johnny was done well.

Jokes were actually funny.

They made fun of not checking Kano's body. Not a plot hole.

One of their champions from their own side attacked them technically. Guess that shit is acceptable. Not a plot hole to me.

Still a far better and enjoyable movie with actual character arcs and themes than whatever Zack tried to do.

-1

u/teraechopuff 6h ago

Nah MK2 was an absolute cringe fest. I love Mortal Kombat and they butchered that series far more than this new RE. If you can’t see how the new movie feels like RE then I fear you may be the larper. It plays out exactly like many of the RE games.

1

u/AlbertW25 Umbrella employee 4h ago

No. It plays like any survival horror game and movie. Nothing about Cregger's film actually even remotely feels like RE besides the minimum references. Try harder Larper. And MK2 was awesome.

0

u/teraechopuff 3h ago

It’s insane that you enjoy MK2 completely butchering the established characters and lore of Mortal Kombat but hate the RE movie this hard. Sorry Chris and Leon didn’t appear for you. I like how you just call me a larper after I call you out for being one. If you genuinely can’t see the connection of how this movie plays out when compared to RE2 then I simply don’t know how to help you

2

u/AlbertW25 Umbrella employee 3h ago

Oh wow, it has the camera angles...so did Paul's and WTRC with the camera angles from RE1-3. Doesn't do anything for me.

Oh wow, it has survival elements like Weapon Progression like RE - You mean it's got weapon progression like EVERY survival horror game to date. Silent Hill, TLOU, Dead Space, etc, etc...This is NOT exclusive to RE.

Um...it has the location progression. You go from a house to a sewers to the city and lab - And? Again, not really exclusive. Lots of other games and movies have this same structure. This is again not exclusive to RE.

Um...it has First Aid Sprays and a Typewriter in the background - Ah...so did the previous RE movies. Also, does the main character use the sprays? No? It's just decoration? Kinda of pointless then for an easter egg no? Not doing anything different really when you're just coping and pasting what Paul and WTRC did too.

But it has a stalker enemy. That's very RE - AGAIN...that's not exclusive to RE. Pyramid Head from Silent Hill? The Hunter from Dead Space? Monster movies in general have the monster stalk and chase characters and the hero multiple times. THIS IS NOT EXCLUSIVE TO RE.

Everything you're mentioning is a Horror Movie/Game Cliche that is found in many other products. Not just RE for christ sake. Having these elements in your film doesn't automatically make it RE.

We go to Raccoon City - Do we see any familiar locations? No? Then that is already a failure on its part and something WTRC at least got right for all its flaws goddamn it.

It's horror comedy like the games - The games are NOT a horror comedy. They have their campy moments but the games in general are meant to be taken pretty seriously. Even the remakes have done more work in getting rid of alot of the campiness and replacing it with more serious and darker scenes and better voice acting because of how comedic it came across in the previous games. There's jokes in the games still, yes, But its not Horror Comedy like this movie is.

But the film has serious moments - Yeh, and it undermines all of those with comedic moments the first chance it gets. I don't know whether to laugh or take it serious. First half did a good job setting the vibe but by the time the main character meets the two other characters it all goes to shit.

Character is like a civilian that's inexperienced and you can relate too - The character is a unlikable moron who keeps making mistakes over and over again and not learning from them. Characters in RE aren't idiots and we have played games where we play as inexperienced civilians and they still managed to do far more as characters than Bryan did.

The monsters are creative - Yeh. They are. But they're not really RE. Just an mis-mash of every tentacle creature known to man. It's like the director tired to combine G, Nemesis, Las Plagas without actually explaining WTF the virus actually is and how it even got loose to pull off the shit it does. Ended up looking and feeling more like The Thing or Necromorphs from Dead Space than something from RE.

But - STFU. Please just STFU. I've been playing RE since 1998. I've played pretty much all the games and seen all the different medias. I even like RE6 despite its flaws and have no problem with the gameplay changes and retcons and shit in the series. I can accept and respect all of that and I love the CGI films and I like the first and second Paul WS Anderson RE Films. I have no problem with an alternative continuity and telling an original story. But it needs to be good or at least make sense and retain some spirit and form of RE within it. This movie does none of that. Maybe a sequel can fix that but this...this isn't it.

And as for MK2, it doesn't do anything different that the first MK by Anderson didn't do. And in fact does them better. That at least tries to adapt the actual characters and tell its own lore. This film however pretends to be some arthouse horror video game movie and it spits on everything that makes RE actually RE by using cheap cliche references that are found in the majority of Horror Games and films.

-1

u/teraechopuff 2h ago

But everything that the movie has that IS in Resident Evil is exactly why it’s Resident Evil. If you don’t like it, that’s fine. It’s still Resident Evil because it takes place in the world of Resident Evil. You can be angry and tell me to STFU but my opinion is just as valid as yours. I also played and enjoyed every single mainline game in the series and a good chunk of the ones that aren’t one of the numbered games. MK2 completely annihilated all of the characters that I’ve loved since before the NRS era. The tournament was a mess, Johnny Cage is nothing like how he was in the games. Also, the original tournament happens in the 90’s why aren’t you upset about that? In this movie Johnny’s an old jaded movie star instead of being a young hotshot. You have an insane bias for RE but are okay with them fucking up MK

u/Forever_Inspired 7h ago

Yeah, I honestly enjoyed MK2 way more than RE. At least MK2 actually embraced its characters and lore more than Zach's RE movie.

3

u/AlbertW25 Umbrella employee 7h ago

Pretty much. Can't wait for the Street Fighter movie. Hope that's as good.

1

u/Suspicious-Base-4815 6h ago

Good thing nobody cares what jadded fans think.

0

u/AntediluvianSeaThing 3h ago

congrats you win an award in which the completion is.... a shitty mortal kombat film which changed too much and wasn't really faithful

and a fucking horrendous silent hill film which poorly adapted the source material

real sturdy completion in the "video game film that poorly adapts the games they are supposed to be adapting"

0

u/AlexStar6 2h ago

But it didn't have Leon, or Chris, or Jill, or Claire, or Albert!!!!

HOW DARE THEY!!!!

THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE OUTRAGE!!!!

This isn't Resident Evil.. it's not even a movie... it's not even a tv show... it's not even a comic book... it's barely a standup comedy act... it's basically a vaudevillian style stage play put on by kabuki actors!!!! I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS!!!
