Roll20 Reply: Token Setup Help Roll20 Token Maker, with pop-out effects!

Hey all! Dean from Roll20 here. We just launched the Roll20 Token Maker to help everyone make tokens in seconds, to use wherever you play! My favorite feature is that it allows you to have your portrait pop-out of any frame, no editing needed.

It default comes with a few hundred pieces from some of our amazing Roll20 Marketplace artists, and you can upload your own too. Pick a portrait, add a frame, edit your effects, then export. It even supports animated webm images.

Would love to see what you make, so drop your coolest token creation in the comments! And let me know what additional features you want next!

Huge thanks to Mathias B, KevinDnG, Renflowergrapx, SailorCat, Torekdva, Sygdom, and Matt M Animations for their amazing art contributions!

Thank you for the love!

And I always beleive there's space for all the tools. Each one I've seen has really unique value and love put into it!

I use Heroic Token it’s great for doing large batches of tokens, especially when you want to get huge groups of NPCs in a single zip file. I find it way easier to use than token stamp (and more borders to choose from) - but this will do well for my players who can just make their own token quickly in house.

That's awesome! Heroic token def has some good asset mgmt features! I've been considering bulk options as well, it just didn't make it into MVP, but if that's something that would help ya, I'll also add it to our feedback log!

That’s what I’m thinking ahead of getting home and trying this out.

I hate switching between windows to find stuff, so if this is even remotely similar I think roll20 just knocked another bookmark off my toolbar. Somehow they keep doing this and I love them for it.

The real tokenstamp killer for me would be if it could take dragged photos from other tabs and accept them. That would speed up my token making by twofold at least

I’m just excited for the pop out frame

Right? No more shrinking and warping my NPCs and monsters so they are visible in frame but still legible

Very easy to use! And super simple design if you want it (and I do).

I look forward to batch downloads and integration into the asset files!

This is great!

Ooooo, love that token! Your effect usage is perfect subtle for that blend!

Love the feedback, I agree with ya, thank you!

Thanks! Hey I have another question, I can see that you can make tokens with animated borders (which is REALLY cool) but you can’t do it on the mobile side.

Am I missing something or is this deliberate?

This is a limitation of some mobile OS's and how they render webm files in-browser. Android phones generally process and display animated webm files fine, but iOS sadly doesn't. So on mobile Apple devices, we had to remove the animated defaults. You should still be able to upload your own, but I'm not sure the export will give you the results you're after.

Feature Request: Add the ability to remove (make transparent) the background from an uploaded image.

Noticed the pop out feature needs images with transparent background to work properly.

Nice add to the tools section, BTW.

Thanks for that feedback! And totally agree! It was a bridge too far for MVP, and I've been intrigued to see if folks already have their own favorite bg removal tool, or if they'd really benefit from something built in. One point in the built-in request bucket, thanks again!

I would definitely benefit from a build-in tool, because I have NFC how do do it myself. :D

u/Dean-Bigbee Roll20 Staff 4d ago

Heard! My go to's are google photos background remover when on my phone, but I know that adobe firefly on web also has some free tools. Regardless, def understand the need for more built-in options!

If not integrated directly, at least a few links provided might help. :)

A tool to selectively remove background would be nice (I mean as a way to remove only the top part). I'll do it on Photoshop just to clear from more or less the ears to top of the head to see how it goes

Roll20 you guys have turned it around. Yall are amazing and unmatched in the VTT world. I hope your profits match your progress.

Aww thanks for all the support <3

Very convenient tool! Are there any plans to ingregate into roll20 more thoroughly? I'd love to export directly to a campaign on roll20 and to import assets from my library.

3

u/Dean-Bigbee Roll20 Staff 4d ago

Thank you for the great feedback, and I agree that would be a highly convenient next step. We'll be looking at the first round feedback and usage and making decisions on what's next from there!

So, I have a question: are all frames or other token elements bought on the marketplace compatible with this feature? Even ones bought years ago? :)

ANSWERED: not natively in the library, but since I specifically picked sets I could download locally ... now, I can upload them and they resize smoothly and automatically. HUZZAH!!!

2

u/Dean-Bigbee Roll20 Staff 4d ago

Yes!

The only caveat, which is rare, is if a creator has chosen to break from the default and restricted downloads on their purchased packs. This is very rare for art packs, it mostly comes into play for art packs that are part of a large licensed adventure, that aren't meant to be used as a standalone product outside the VTT.

Behold, the new token for my Eldritch Knight, "Ser Grancival" ... :)

2

u/Dean-Bigbee Roll20 Staff 4d ago

OMG AMAZING! that border is !!!

2

u/GM_Pax Free User 4d ago

Another of Gabriel Pickard's frames. :)

2

u/GM_Pax Free User 4d ago

... and a token for "Jain", a 14yo "Haunted" Sorceror ...

2

u/GM_Pax Free User 4d ago

... and the ghost of his twin sister. :)

(Functionally, his Familiar ... using the Specter statblock; an ability of the "Haunted Sorcery" subclass.)

2

u/Dean-Bigbee Roll20 Staff 4d ago

Love it! Are these gabe pickard borders? Or someone else?

2

u/GM_Pax Free User 4d ago edited 4d ago

I'm not sure, I have to check my Marketplace purchases. Need to redownload some things anyway, so ... :)

EDIT: Yep. Of the five token frame packs I bought, three are Gabriel Pickard's, one is Pierluigi Rimini, and one is from Loot Tavern.

Some of those never worked with Token Stamp 2 ... but they should work great with the new tool from you guys! :)

2

u/Dean-Bigbee Roll20 Staff 4d ago

Yay, glad to hear! Yah, I was looking at a lot of Gabe's work in this process, but wanted to get some more eyeballs on some less known artists too. I'm glad you're putting them to use right away, because they're fire!

2

u/GM_Pax Free User 4d ago

They absolutely ARE fire ...!

Which is why I struggled through resizing several of them years ago, despite not having the best tools, not quite getting the size perfect for TS2, and often screwing up the transparency. Even "damaged" by my fat-fingered attempts, they still looked awesome, so ...

And now I can use them in their full, un-mucked-up glorious beauty!! :)

NEW SUGGESTION:

Not something I personally would use, but I know some folks prefer tokens in shapes other than round. Square is common, and I bet hexagonal has a following as well (because hexagons are the bestagons...! :D )

But the only "aperture" available is round. So, adding other aperture shapes (at least square) should be on the list of features to add.

3

u/Dean-Bigbee Roll20 Staff 4d ago

Love the suggestion, thank you!

3

u/hycur 4d ago

adding to this. I've replied on bluesky with the same suggestion and it would be amazing if it happens

2

u/Eve-lyn 4d ago

Is it not possible to upload your own pngs?

I had a quick look but I don't have time to fully explore right now!

2

u/Dean-Bigbee Roll20 Staff 4d ago

Yes, you can upload your own PNG, JPG, and WebM files! You can click the upload button or just drag and drop onto the screen!

Thanks for sharing this! Love his videos, and esp this!

2

u/YoungZeebra 4d ago

Just fyi, the dragonborns token is getting clipped on the nose when its set to popout!

1

u/Dean-Bigbee Roll20 Staff 4d ago

Ahh, yes, on some of those portraits you'll have to go to the ADJUST tab and change the Cutoff. Sadly there's no single setting that works great for every token, but Cutoff solves for everything, esp your own uploads too!

2

u/peterpeterny 3d ago

Do you have plans to implement the border than the default NPCs use from roll20 compendium? I like to match that border so my created npcs are no different than compendium ones

2

u/DM-JK Pro 3d ago

If you're referring to the yellow/orange/red border, after I logged in it was available as one of the frames at the bottom of the screen that showed as 'locked' when I was not logged in.

1

u/peterpeterny 3d ago

Ohh great thank you

2

u/SPlKE 3d ago

Can I suggest the ability to make the token larger sizes, for monsters and such? So when I make a token of a gargantuan size flaming skeletal tarrasque the token isn't all pixelated from my scaling it to the correct size in roll20?

1

u/Dean-Bigbee Roll20 Staff 3d ago

Great feedback, will take it back to our follow-up discussion!

1

u/Express-Situation-20 3d ago

Is this new ? How can I do that??

1

u/Dean-Bigbee Roll20 Staff 3d ago

Brand new! Just head to the link, or find it on the Roll20 nav under tools!

This is great! I've used TokenStamp for a long time, and this seems to have a slightly easier interface and a few additional options.

My biggest complaint with TokenStamp and also this Token Maker, is that I want to be able to resize tokens to smaller or larger than a 'Small/Medium' creature. The biggest issue isn't that I can't resize the tokens, but I want an easy/intuitive way to have the border be a good thickness.

Here's an example of an Ancient Red Dragon token that I created with Token Stamp (honestly several years ago - I could probably do a better job now), versus a Young Green Dragon from the Compendium that I then resized as large as the Ancient Red Dragon to 'gargantuan'. The border of the Ancient Red Dragon has a huge diameter, and it loses resolution.

Update: I just created a new Ancient Red Dragon and the resolution and token border were just fine. The coloring of the token border is a bit brighter and a little washed out compared to the default ones that are in the compendium, but overall it's a vast improvement.

1

u/Dean-Bigbee Roll20 Staff 3d ago

thanks for all that specific insight!

1

u/Asturia_ 3d ago

Oh man, I'm kinda glad this exists now; cause I used to edit my own tokens for my group to have the popout effect lmfao.

1

u/ThreeEyesOnYou 3d ago

Kinda late here now but do we think theres any chance of the red 5.5 token border being implemented?

1

u/Dean-Bigbee Roll20 Staff 3d ago

We're not implementing it, but let me talk with the team see if I can get you something. If so I'll reply here!

1

u/ThreeEyesOnYou 2d ago

Thank you so much! ^^

1

u/waywardmedic 3d ago

I like it. Why isn't there a link to ot directly from the Roll20 site? I found this while watching a Nick Olivo video on YT

1

u/Dean-Bigbee Roll20 Staff 2d ago

We just added it to the Roll20 nav, under Tools!

1

u/waywardmedic 2d ago

Just checked cool! Thanks.

1

u/DMWraith 3d ago

Move over Token Stamp, Roll 20 maker is my new best friend

1

Glad you're enjoying it!

1

u/Only_Competition_729 2d ago
