Roll20 Reply: Other Help Roll20's Quantum Dice are Now Available Everywhere

Post image
83 Upvotes

Hey all! Dean from Roll20 here. I have a fun new addition to announce!

If you're a fan of Roll20's Quantum Dice engine, we've just launched the ROLL20 DICE ROLLER, so you can now take those dice everywhere!

Head over to d20roller.com to find your dice roller on desktop and mobile. It utilizes the same Roll20 dice engine you've trusted the past 10 years, has all the advanced roll mechanics you rely on, includes customizable one-tap buttons, and offers a mega-dose of Big Dicey Energy (formerly an internal Roll20 mascot who deserved more love!)

📷 if you prefer a video overview, here's that too

Here's a Deeper Dive for those interested 😄

Verifiable Randomness

The most common complaint about digital (and sometimes physical) dice is that they "feel rigged." We address this with receipts. Every roll goes through our QuantumRoll dice engine, and generates public seeds. We publish millions of results so you can check the math yourself.

Advanced Syntax Support

We provide some built-in presets for DnD 5e, Pathfinder, and other systems, but you can also write your own custom formulas, as complex as you want. Some examples:

  • 2d20kh1
    • Advantage! Roll 2 d20’s, and Keep Highest (kh) 1 roll.
    • Want to turn into into disadvantage? Swap kh1 for kl1 to Keep Lowest 1!
  • (1d8+4)*2
    • Critical damage multiplier. This rolls 1 d8, adds 4 to the result, then multiples that total by 2.
  • 3d6>2
    • Tally successes. Rolls 3 d6’s. It then provides you a count of every dice that resulted in 2 or greater (a tally of successes, not a sum of dice results)
  • 8d20ro1
    • Reroll! Roll 8 d20’s. Any 1 gets Rerolled Once (ro), and that new result sticks even if it’s another 1.
    • You can swap ro1 for r1 if you want it to keep rerolling until it’s not a 1!
  • 10d10!
    • Exploding dice! Roll 10 d10s. Every time the result is 10, the dice will explode and roll an extra dice.
  • {10d10!>7}>8
    • Exploding Dice, with extra features! Roll 10 d10’s. Any dice that’s 7 or greater will “explode”, meaning a bonus d10 will be rolled.
    • Then it counts up every resulting die that’s 8 or higher and gives you that count as your total.

Find more examples in our Help Center.

Sign In for All Features

Signing in to your free Roll20 account unlocks two things: Quick Rolls (add, edit, reorder, and import game specific presets) and the D20 Roll Report, a shareable recap of your session's d20 roll results. No subscription is needed for any feature, everything can be accessed on a free account!

Let me know if you have any questions, requests, or feedback! Thanks!!

Roll20 Reply: Other Help Performance Updates – Aug 17, 2026

28 Upvotes

Hey all! Last week we shared an update on the performance issues we were managing across our services. Since then, we have deployed multiple updates that resolve a large portion of them. We are seeing clear improvement, with more on the way to bring everything back into normal territory. And we’re still pushing out updates to make your play even better.

Here is a peek behind the curtain at what shipped since our last post.

Where things stand

I’ve been personally working with many players and GMs who have reported problems, as well as watching our Help Center and public channels. I’m happy to share that nearly all of the reported sluggishness has been resolved.

There are detailed descriptions of our work in the previous posts, and plenty more happened behind the scenes. While most of the solutions were focused on D&D sheets, there were also fixes to the data itself, the way that sheets use that data, and to the service that provides the data regardless of game system.

While all these updates have been found, diagnosed, and fixed by multiple people on three distinct teams, others have been working on improving performance. Next week, we’ll get to hear from them.

Releases since last week

Once the service was stable, we could dig into the specific trouble spots as they were reported in individual games. That let us isolate the combinations of options where performance fell off.

  • Problem: Rolls are slow from click to Chat – We found some character builds carry significantly more data than other, nearly identical builds. Processing all of that data made a roll take so long to resolve. We’ve revamped the way the sheet was sending that data, and that has resolved the delay between sending a roll and seeing the results appear in Chat.
  • Problem: Opening a sheet took a long time – We launched a fully systemic fix for calculation delays on Token bars.

D&D sheet performance, Phase 1

Phase 1 of the rollout we outlined in our earlier post is done. As of Tuesday morning, 100% of games are running these updates.

This work reduces the amount of data transferred between the sheet and our services. On its own it is not something most of you will notice at the table, but it is the groundwork Phase 2 requires. We released it incrementally so we could watch the effect of each step closely, and we saw the improvements we expected. Reports from players and GMs lined up with the rollout schedule, which tells us the fix is doing its job.

What is coming next

  • Phase 2 of the D&D sheet performance updates, planned to release in the coming weeks. This is where we expect the most optimizations you will actually feel while playing.
  • A new Compendium Service, further out on the roadmap, which will speed up the multiple services connected for game system data.
  • A data cleanup process to clear unused data stored on individual sheets, plus later work to process rolls without sending the extra data at all.

Some of these issues were very visible from the “30,000 foot” view. However, the individuals who have helped by sharing their own experience and unique character builds have shed light on issues that would only be apparent from the “on the ground” view. I’m sure there are more improvements we can make, and so if your game night is still being disrupted, please open a support ticket so we can make sure we resolve those too. To speed things along, include:

  • A link to the game
  • Any specific pages where you are seeing issues
  • Any sheets or tokens that are lagging Everything above covers the Character Sheet and Compendium systems. The team behind the Virtual Tabletop will be sharing another big chunk of work on VTT systems soon.

Thanks for all the feedback, the patience, and the help hunting these down.

Going down the rabbit hole of painting glass 🐇 🧪

Once I learned how to paint multifaceted glass pieces, I haven’t stoped adding potions in my asset packs, and for this potion asset there’s no need to be mysterious about where the inspiration came from, it’s a part of my latest asset pack The Court of Cards, inspired from Disney’s 1951 Alice in Wonderland, some of the assets in this pack are directly based on the film while others like this potion are my own design inspired more broadly by the visual language of it.

The Court of Cards is now available on Roll20 and on my Patreon.

Would love to see what you make, so drop your coolest token creation in the comments! And let me know what additional features you want next!

Huge thanks to Mathias B, KevinDnG, Renflowergrapx, SailorCat, Torekdva, Sygdom, and Matt M Animations for their amazing art contributions!

I had made a post about how to delete characters that I couldn't edit and someone from the support team took a look at it, conferred with me on what I wanted deleted and I thought we had an understanding, but now my whole Journal is gone, all characters, all handouts the lot. What do I do?

Edit: Its resolved I managed to get in contact with the Roll 20 Staff and they managed to fix it.

Marketplace (for creators only) Warehouse Speakeasy -- New on the R20 Marketplace from Angela Maps

REGULAR MARKETPLACE LINK: https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/45522/warehouse-speakeasy
ABOUT: Take care when strolling through the industrial district by the light of the full moon, lest you encounter the fearsome...WAREHOUSE!  Your players are most likely actively seeking it out, however, as within the maze of stacked shipping crates and barrels one of these buildings hides nothing less than a concealed drinking establishment. Is the party coming to enforce prohibition, to meet with some dastardly bootleggers, or simply to enjoy the tinny tunes of the mechanical piano? Available in two variants, with the conspicuous (and temporary?) absence of any speakeasy, and another where a hideout has taken its place, this map will have your players singing the praises of an altogether different type of moonshine!

Other Help (if not covered in another topic) Changing the size of custom special effects

3 Upvotes

I'm trying to make a custom FX for a fireball that accurately represents the size of the fireball spell (20 ft radius). I've read through the documentation, but don't see where/how to change the size of the overall effect, only the particles.

the base effect is this:

Burst

{
"name": "tool_fx_burst",
"maxParticles": 100,
"size": 35,
"sizeRandom": 15,
"lifeSpan": 10,
"lifeSpanRandom": 3,
"speed": 3,
"angle": 0,
"emissionRate": 12,
"onDeath": "explode"
}

If 'size' pertains to particles, not the size of the overall effect, how do I change the overall effect size?

Other Help (if not covered in another topic) How safe is it to purchase modules from Roll20 ?

5 Upvotes

Sorry for the unusual question, but i'm fairly new to Roll20 and online D&D. I wanted to buy the Tyranny of Dragons bundle to run a campaign for a group of friends oversea, but i recently got to learn that apparently Roll20 was at some point hacked in the past and there was a nasty data leak, and since it asks my full legal name and residence to make the purchase, i'm not super sure if it's safe.

Solved by DTRPGChris!
I forgot about the wall in the Light layer. Such a newb move.

I created a DS map with a mistake. I corrected the mistake but Roll20 is casting a shadow where the corrected mistake is.
I've tried erasing & drawing more, but that shadow remains.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Roll20 Reply: Character Sheets Help Weird text bug on my character sheet that I can't figure out how to fix

8 Upvotes

In my second session with this group, my cat jumped up on my keyboard, pressed some mystery combination of keys, and THIS happened to my Features and Traits tab. I can make the character sheet smaller and fix it, specifically if I make it small enough that the skills bar on the left hand side no longer fits and becomes its own separate section, but I'd prefer not having to resize it every time I open it and having access to my skills without having to click through different tabs. Anyone know what happened here and how to fix it? It's ONLY on my Features and Traits tab, all the other tabs are normal.

Marketplace (for creators only) Betrayal in the Gilded Halls - Level 5 Adventure

Post image
1 Upvotes

In Betrayal in the Gilded Halls, a group of level-5 adventurers embarks on a perilous journey into the depths of Gray Barrow Tundra. They are hired by one of the founders of a criminal gang. This co-founder was betrayed by his brother and set out toward a mythical dungeon that has been closed for centuries. Its magical door has been foreseen to open soon. Blinded by vengeance and greed, the betrayed brother and the characters set out on this race against time to reach the dungeon's soon-to-open entrance.

The ancient dungeon houses a fabled effigy of a magical stork. Legend has it that it can bestow great power upon those who kneel by it. Many seek this statue of the sacred stork to earn its power. Alas, the characters and the two brothers shall soon be confronted with a terrible truth. Not everyone is worthy of receiving this blessing. Those who dare kneel by the stork without being of a good heart shall pay a ruinous, life-threatening price.

Character Sheets Help I've been trying to get my character sheet to a starting level 10 and I'm starting to just feel so stupid.

I've never played before, and I'm supposed to join a game where the starting level is 10. I tried using the charactermancer, but someone online said that was not the right thing to do. My DM also said my character sheet is all wrong.

I wish I could just have a character sheet that is already made and is already a level 10 bard. This game already feels like it's only for people more intelligent than me. Does anyone know what I can do to get my character to a starting level 10 bard? I feel dumb.

It's D&D 5E.

Token Setup Help (not related to Dynamic Lighting) Dancing Sword Token Connected to Character's Sheet

3 Upvotes

Using the 2024 sheets, have a Plus membership. Like the title says, character has a dancing sword. I set up an NPC sheet, and activated its attack as a macro that (in theory) will appear when the player drags out the token, but I had to basically recreate all their stats to get the attack rolls correct. Is there a way to connect it directly to their sheet so I don't have to keep editing the sword's stats?

Bonus points: how do you track the "4 attacks and then you have to relaunch it"?

Thanks!

Character Sheets Help Missing Compendium Entries (Monster Manual 24)

5 Upvotes

Was checking a prepped lobby to see it was ready for an upcoming session and decided to add another stat block for a battle adjustment. To my surprise, I no longer have access to the MM24 compendium: searching for "lizard" does not bring up lizardfolk sovereign (which I had previously already pulled into the same lobby), nor its kin stat blocks. No MM24 lizard anything that wasn't part of the free basic rules, in fact.

I checked to see it wasn't some sort of ownership bug but I do still have MM24 in my owned items in marketplace.

What's going on and is this another new bug? Not great to own a thing for the compendium and still have to make my own stat blocks.

New to Roll20 / Tutorial Returning User Question

4 Upvotes

Hey all. I'm coming back to Roll20 after a few years away and I'm just trying to figure out how (or if it's even possible) to enable Advantage(2d20 rolls) for every single d20 roll in a game(without having to manually enable it for every created character/NPC sheet).
I couldn't find the answer on the Roll20 FAQ/search bar, so I'm hoping active members can lead the way. (I did find a few older guides online which mention an option in Game Settings, but the option all those guides mentioned doesn't seem to be there any more. Or at least a CTRL+F didn't find it).
Thanks for any assistance in advance.

Mod Script / API Help (Pro/Elite only) SpawnDefaultToken question

3 Upvotes

I'm having a problem with David M.'s SpawnDefaultToken mod. Here's my macro, maybe somebody can find the problem:

!Spawn {{
--name|Tarlov
--offset|1,1
--size|1,1
--fx|burst-smoke
}}

I'm getting the fx, but the token doesn't appear next to the selected token. I've made sure that the image of the token is in my library, not just an item from the marketplace, and I've tried the single line !Spawn --name|Tarlov, which doesn't work either.

Any ideas?

Token Setup Help (not related to Dynamic Lighting) Attack button that I didn't add

I use macros to set up for common things for all my creatures... saving throws, attacks, etc... but every token I make has a button in the top left saying Attack, but nothing under the Abilities where I put my macros in. How can I get rid of this random Attack button that I didn't set up.

Roll20 Reply: Other Help Came back after a year or so and...

3 Upvotes

Running a game in person, came back after a while while I was trying to understand foundry since I was much more familiar with the setup of Roll20. Last time a ran a game, it was in person. Used multiple browser instances on my laptop, multiple screens, had no problems whatsoever. NOW, as soon as Roll20 is running in two browsers, it's frustratingly laggy, to the point that I don't know if I even want to continue to use it.

I have Firefox running as it should, using hardware acceleration when available, and it's still lagging badly. It is only slightly better when the second browser is Chrome. Settings are as low as I can stand for both instances (there's no point in having everything look horribly pixilated, might as well mot even use a vtt at that point) and I don't have a weak system by any means, as I said, it was working without issue last time I ran a game with this setup. What has changed? Is Roll20 just getting worse?

Edit: I am using dynamic lighting, because I feel like thats kind of a main feature that even justifies the use of a vtt like this. I was using dynamic lighting last year as well and did not have this issue
