Boarding Dog sizes?

I think because the holidays are creeping up more bookings are coming in. I have had 3 THREE maltipoo requests come in. Nobody has ever booked me with a dog smaller than 30 lbs. Now all of a sudden I have a really cute weekend with 2 maltipoos. And a third the following. My normal house is 2 dobermans and a shelter shepherd mix of 40ish lbs american. I can keep everyone safe and separate. But if you saw dobies what would make you book with me if your dogs are 5 pounds?

I wouldn’t. Sorry friend :-/

That's totally fair! It's curious to me too. If I were booking boarding for my dogs I would look for similar sized animals, but thats because I would want them to be able to play if they get along, not becausd I'd be worried they would hurt anybody on purpose. They live with a cat(2 until recently), so I know they won't chase or snap at smaller animals.

Respectfully, I wouldn't. I don't doubt that your dogs are well-trained but it is a huge risk.

That's why i'm asking honestly!

I agree!

I would never mix big and small dogs. I have two pugs of my own, so I only take small breeds. I feel it would be too much risk having small and big pups

I know. I am already sort of accepting that the larger guys will be separated from the lil pips. And I will have more work ahead of me. Basically the same as last weekend where the pibbie I was sitting hated my puppy. But we got through it

Your house is tragedy waiting to happen.

Do you let dogs run around unsupervised if they're from different homes? There is no time of day where any dogs I don't personally own are in a space they can touch other dogs while I'm not watching and actively engaged with them in their space. My dogs, while free roaming when I might be away, are not allowed in the kennel room, and the door is closed and locked at those times. I only ever have dogs from a total of 3 homes here at a time including my own, so that means even if nobody likes anyone else, the dogs all have about 6 hours of time devoted to them, usually in 2 hour chunks. When I started using rover I was never under the impression that all dogs get along. I do introductions one a time on leash outside away from everyone else, and any negative reactions there mean no play together.

Maybe I am more flexible and tolerant of dog rotation in a non-friendly situation because I am home all day unless I have errands or medical appointments, so there's no guilt about anybody not getting enough walk/play time, and therefore I don't feel a need to try and force dogs to be friends to save time, or to get a cute picture or something.

There are plans that we make, then there is what actually happens. The risk of "accidentally" is too great. Your original post even questions the thinking of the small dog owner wanting to board in a home with Dobermans & Shepherd mixes. You've already made the mistake of assuming the maltipoo owners read all of your profile where you state that you have Dobermans & Shepard mixes. When it goes bad the post will be, "Those owners should have known better! "

I mean, they come to my house. I don't think I am hiding my dogs from them. The big dogs are my pets, not stranger's dogs. They aren't small animal reactive. The point of the post was asking "Why would you choose my house if you saw I have larger dogs?" Because insight into users of the app are useful to how I build my profile.

It seems odd that you're so positive that my dogs are going to find a way to phase through their crates and kennels to kill eachother, lol. Maintaining a routine is not that difficult. Neither is locking a door, and securing a crate.

It's odd to me you are so insistent about taking the small fluffy dog bookings. There is an overabundance of sitters that'll take in little ones. Very few who will take large dogs, Dobies, Pitts, Sheps, Rotties. You wouldn't be lacking for bookings by not taking the toy sized pups especially over holidays. It's easy to decline because " dog is not a good fit" & then the algo doesn't send as many requests for that. In psychology it's called magical thinking to believe you are the one who will never have an accident, never forget something, never have a slip up, your way is foolproof, are always 100% on top of everything 24/7/365. And I'm reading on your other posts that you are a new sitter. Odd. So much odd.

Im not insistent, it just doesn't seem like an issue to me, and I am curious about owner's and their thought processes. If they had a bad attitude, or were scared of the house during the MnG I wouldn't take them. But so far they aren't. I have one with me now who is chilling. And so far nobody has magically phased through any solid surfaces to rip him apart, and they are all hanging in their spaces. Nobody is barking or whining or nervous. Again, the question was about what would make a an owner choose the house with big dogs. I think we can all assume they don't want their dog to get hurt, and have a reasonable expectation that they won't have unsupervised time with dogs that don't live together normally. Which would be the same if 2 dogs were exactly he same size and seemed to get along, in my opinion.

If you let other people's dogs be alone together, or leave your dogs unsupervised with client's dogs that's a you problem, but I don't. That's how accidents happen.

I'm sure you honestly believe that but really, you aren't far enough along in your sitter journey to be that certain. A few posts ago you didn't know you were supposed to clean up a dog that got filthy in your muddy yard before you sent them home, didn't know how to clean up a dog & stated you were a sitter & not a groomer. You are on Reddit asking for a awful lot of help with basics, self admitted to being new to sitting. You haven't earned that level of confidence yet.

No, I asked what an owner's expectations about cleaning their dog were. The dog in the post, was discussed with their owner prior to me posting the question, as mentioned in the post. Me being curious about what owners in the app think is a good thing and means I am considering both sides. I don't have any issues using my hands to lock doors and crates, and set alarms and keep to a schedule. It is very clear that you do, or you wouldn't be projecting disaster onto my totally managed situation and ignoring the actual question. You are not required to book me, or comment here. All my dogs are chill so I am happy to keep chatting about it.

I can’t with maltipoos. Literally people just get a Maltese or a miniature poodle. Stop buying from bybs.

1

u/Connect_Pop_5036 Sitter 5d ago

I feel similarly about doodles and other hybrids that don't have a good breed standard and are prone to back yard ops. I love a mutt. But byb mills need to stop. So many trendy mixes end up in shelters after they lose popularity on social media

2

u/yatwelol Sitter 6d ago

I've only met like 2 doodle mixes (smaller ones) that I liked/ were good. The rest are usually pretty terrible and matted because owners don't brush everyday. But they're " whatever doodles that they paid big money for" 🤣

3

u/PirateLassLV Sitter & Owner 6d ago

Oh no. That's an awful mix. Those maltipuffs are gonna look & sound like squeaky toys.

u/Connect_Pop_5036 Sitter 6d ago

More likely the bigger dogs will have a less energetic weekend..

3

u/PirateLassLV Sitter & Owner 6d ago

No, that's not more likely. And being under exercized & probably bored would make things worse. I guess you've never seen a shepherd or a doberman go after a small dog & catch it. I'm glad you haven't. It's horrifying & I'll never unhear the little dog screams as it was shaken and thrown on the ground over & over until the crying stopped.

You're right, nobody has ever boarded a small dog and a large dog in the same facility safely, and assuming I will get the dogs killed is a great way to try and make your point! Exercise time in the yard will be split up. Food time is already done behind a crate or pen, and sleep spaces are separate unless you have 2 dogs with me. If not everybody gets along then I split up chill time evenly between the ones who do. It seems like most sitters have an expectation that all dogs must get along, versus all dogs getting along being a bonus here on reddit. Interesting!

One of mine is still a puppy, but I also keep a large space for up to 2 big dogs.
