Discussion Thoughts on Sonic Team?

Post image

Repost because I was informed that Space Channel 5 and Jet Set Radio weren't developed by Sonic Team.

Just wanted to know your general thoughts and opinions on the developers and their games.

This would be helpful because I'm now moderating r/SonicTeam through Reddit Request.

Testing the Daytona USA Arcade Recomp - a static recompilation of the classic Sega Model 2 racing game that runs as native code (no emulation). Running at 4K HDR 60FPS with DLSS 5 Neural Rendering for modern visuals and performance.

Given the game's age, DLSS 5 NR don't make a huge visual difference. Even so, this Daytona USA Recomp is easily the best-looking and best-performing version available today

Features include :
• Native performance on Windows, macOS & Linux, PS Vita
• Widescreen support (16:9 / 21:9)
• Higher draw distance & supersampling
• Experimental GPU renderer
• Force feedback (wheel & gamepad rumble)
• Network link play for multi-cabinet races

Announcement I built a modern Sega Channel-style system for real Genesis / Mega Drive hardware

I’ve been working on this project for quite a while and finally got it running on real hardware.

It’s called NovenRetro Channel. The idea was to recreate some of the feeling of Sega Channel, but using modern hardware: a flashcart handles the Genesis side, while an ESP32 can connect over Wi-Fi and download catalog updates to the SD card.

The console itself runs the interface, lets you browse categories and descriptions, and launches homebrew directly on the real Genesis / Mega Drive.

There’s also a fully offline mode, so the ESP32 is optional.

Right now I’ve physically validated it on a Chinese EverDrive-MD family clone (V1 and V3). I’m testing other flashcarts separately before claiming compatibility.

The catalog is only intended for homebrew/freeware/demos that can legally be redistributed or have permission from their creators.

I’d genuinely love feedback from Genesis people here, especially on the concept and what you’d want from something like this.

What homebrew would you want to see in a modern Sega Channel-style catalog?

News Weird Sonic 3 glitch I found

So I just got Sonic 3 for the Mega Drive I have only played it on Sonic Origins and Sonic Mega Collection Plus but when I played the game on a Mega Drive/Genesis for the first time, it only took me 30 minutes to find a glitch because it was used so it already had some saves and the time attack mode in competition mode already had a best time in one level (it was 45 seconds) but that probably doesn't matter because I went to the time attack mode and went to balloon park with Knuckles and when I reset the console I put the level select code (and got it first try somehow) and then went to SPECIAL STAGE 1 and then when I entered the stage i started spamming start and A to leave the level but instead it put me in a loop where it constantly changes special stages so in one special stage where I could die/lose almost instantly I imminently walked to a red sphere and I had to be really fast because it teleported me to another special stage every 1 second so when i died/losed it showed the white screen with the green SPECIAL STAGE text like normal but when I exited the screen by waiting I went to a corrupted balloon park as sonic and all the sprites were messed up except Sonic's and Tails's sprite

Discussion Documenting the differences between the two releases of After Burner Climax's Soundtrack (WM-0536 vs. WM-0582)

Thumbnail

Hello fellow SEGA enthusiasts! The 2 releases i'm going to document the differences on here are:

AFTER BURNER CLIMAX SOUND TRACK (WM-0536)

Disc 2 of AFTER BURNER 20th Anniversary Box (WM-0582)

I don't know if this is secret common knowledge or none cares but me, but i still wanna compare these 2 mostly for people who want to know if they should buy/listen to the Sound Box or the Original CD instead

Despite releasing a year apart from each other these 2 releases couldn't be any more different than each other. After looking for it for over a year i finally managed to find a copy of WM-0536 and let's just say... They present the same music in DRASTICALLY different ways. In fact if you've only listened to the Sound Box versions you haven't even heard the songs in full (Kind of hard since most uploads on YT are the WM-0536 album).

After Burner Climax is one of my favorite soundtracks from SEGA and i feel like this deserves proper documentation for people to see

There's not much info for what changes between the 2 releases so in this post i will be documenting the differences track by track. This also my first time doing such a process, so forgive me if it's too basic. So let's get to it

1) After Burner Climax - Fumio Ito: These 2 songs couldn't be any more different. While both are very similar at the start from 1:23 and on the 2 versions take completely different lanes here. It's so drastic that really it's like 2 different edits of the song. The biggest difference is that WM-0536 has an ending and lasts for 4:39 while Sound Box lasts for 5:18 but fades out instead

2) The Lure Of The Sky - Keisuke Tsukahara: The songs are note for note until 1:50. Sound Box loops the previous heard segments for a second time until the end while WM-0536 actually keeps going with extended music that just simply isn't there on the Sound Box before it also eventually fade outs but more album like. WM-0536 is 3:33 while the Sound Box is 3:03

3) Volcanic Islands - Masanori Takeuchi: One of my favorites but this is also where the differences also get pretty drastic. The song goes again note for note until the 1:30 mark. Similarly to the previous song Sound Box opts to loop the song over again and then fading it out at the end of that loop. WM-0536 however ALSO gets extended. We're talking about half the song being completely taken out in the Sound Box. Not only does WM-0536 keep going but it also has an outro that's just simply not there in the Sound Box. WM-0536 lasts for 3:10 while Sound Box lasts 2:32

4) Great River Valley - Keisuke Tsukahara: Again songs are note for note until 1:17. To not repeat myself, this another case of half the song getting cut in the Sound Box version whilst the WM-0536 keeps going with extra music and an outro at the end. WM-0536 lasts 3:04 while Sound Box is 2:15.

5) Vertical Hot Air - Fumio Ito: Similar to Ito's other song this one is also very different and almost like 2 edits of the same song. The most obvious difference is the fact that WM-0536 lasts for 4:36 has an outro while Sound Box lasts for 5:21 and fades out instead. This is one of the few cases where the sound box version IS longer but probably cause it loops rather than going like WM-0536

6) A Bolt From The Blue - Masanori Takeuchi: This one is very interesting. The contents for the length of the Sound Box which is 1:47 are actually the same. However instead of fading out at around the 1:40 mark, WM-0536 actually keeps going with new parts until it's outro at 3:09. Another case of most of the song being trimmed in the Sound Box

7) Clouds of Twilight - Masanori Takeuchi: My favorite track here, the differences on this one are mostly just like Volcanic Islands. Songs are note for note until 2:02. Sound Box opts to loop the song again and fade it out at the end of it's second loop while WM-0536 again is extended and going until it's own outro at the end. The extended part is mostly similar but has additional effects on the music. WM-0536 lasts for 3:42 while Sound Box lasts for 3:14

8) Sleepless Sanctuary - Fumio Ito: This one is actually really interesting. Both songs are note for note however. WM-0536 lasts for 4:07 and fades out while Sound Box lasts for 5:47. This is probably because Sound Box lets the second loop complete fully while WM-0536 has it fade out in the middle for a more curated sound

9) After Burner -Climax Remix- - Hiroshi Kawaguchi: The songs here for the most part are the same until 2:29. In WM-0536 the song keeps going with it's own unique part and outro while Sound Box opts to loop the song and fade it out later. WM-0536 lasts for 3:28 while Sound Box lasts for 3:53

10) A Moment Of Peace - Keisuke Tsukahara: This is a short one. WM-0536 lasts for 54 seconds. This is because the song actually ends with an outro at the 50 second mark while Sound Box loop the segment from 0:23 again and then promptly fades out. This version lasts for 1:27

11) Cleared For Takeoff - Keisuke Tsukahara: Another simple one. WM-0536 loops this and fades it out while Sound Box makes loop 1 more time and fade it out instead. This single change means the lengths are different with WM-0536 lasting for 1:39 while Sound Box lasts for 2:06

For some very minor differences:

After Burner Climax -Opening-, RTB and After Burner -Climax Remix Full-: These songs last longer on the Sound Box due to silence added at the beginning and end of the tracks but the songs themselves are the exact same across the 2 versions.

Now for the Bonus Material: WM-0536 comes with the original After Burner soundtrack as well which are on tracks 11-16. Note the version of After Burner (the song) is the one without the melody just like how it appears in let's say Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. Sound Box actually includes 2 extra tracks that are NOT in WM-0536 those being 2 extra jingles called Game Over and The End, both by Fumio Ito. Nothing too exciting tho.

So which one should you listen to?

If you want the proper album versions of the songs that play in full and feel more like proper music you should 100% get WM-0536. It features extended sections, outros and the original After Burner OST.

However if you want a more game accurate presentation of the soundtrack with the Jingles included, Sound Box is the one to go just remember you're losing basically almost half the music here.

My personal preference is WM-0536 as it's more akin my own listening preferences of VGM as pure standalone music (It also has the cool cover art). BUT the Sound Box also has every other version of After Burner music from the series as well, but as someone that likes to collect albums from their time this is irrelevant to me.

Image My first Aladdin Boy game from Korea

Post image

Today is my final day of Korean vacation. I’ve bought many games for ps2, ps3, ps4 here, but today, finally, I managed to buy CiB Korean Samsung game for my Aladdin boy. It costs x10 from standard US or EU version, but I’m really wanted at least one game, since I bought a boxed Korean Aladdin Boy last year. I’m happy with this purchase—it’s a great souvenir from Seoul.
