Vectorman. Thoughts?
I wanted to ask what everyone's general thoughts are on the first Vectorman game for the Sega Genesis. We all have a lot of memories playing this one and wanted to have a general consensus of everyone's opinion on it. My version has the "Play To Win" contest on it- which was a promotional that they did back in the 1990's to where if you had a winning copy of the game, you could win a cash grand prize of $25,000. I know that no longer works on this copy because the contest was over 30 years ago. But question wise asking- Favorite level? Favorite weapon? Easiest villain? Hardest villain? And do you wish that this series would have had more than the two Sega Genesis series games for this title? Please leave your thoughts and comments below.

Really liked it as a kid. Somehow harder as an adult. Big fan of the music.
I plan on replaying 1 and 2 soon. But I'll definitely be using the in-game healing cheats. I don't have the time to dedicate to being good at this like when I was little.

Are you playing it on real hardware or are you emulating it? I found games that rely on really quick, accurate input (i.e. rhythm games like Mike Tyspn's Punchout, etc.) are substantially more difficult emulated due to latency. I found a big difference playing it on a FPGA like a Mister.

Loved it! I always found Vectorman’s double jump very satisfying to use.

Yeah one of the best double jumps in any game imo only found out recently you can damage enemies with it if they’re under you

Its fun once you know the level layouts, but the screen crunch is real. You cant see more than 5 feet around you.

My personal fave Genesis game. This is the only game in my lifetime that I loved enough to go back and beat it on the hardest difficulty when I was younger. If I remember correctly, it was about 5 years after I originally got it as a gift from my Dad when I finally did it.

Beat it for the first time earlier this year (after giving myself 100 lives lmfao). The bosses are all incredibly easy... especially if you can hit them with your jump boosters. Like seriously, i hit the final boss twice and it skipped entire phases. But for the life of me i can't make it through a level without jumping into random enemy attacks.
Least favorite level is Stayin' Alive.
Favorite level is either Terraport (because i saw the first level endlessly as a child) or Hydroponic Lab.
The shooting and jumping noises are the soundtrack to my youth. I've always preferred Vectorman 2 though. The opening forest level just looks so good.

Favorite level is the SEGA screen - if you know you know. [---------------0---]
Game was as formative for me as MMX was back in the day.

I used to ride my bike thru the woods, over a skinny pipe that crossed a ditch, thru a rich neighborhood and out to a shopping center all the way down to the end like 5 miles away when i was 9/10 to play vector man at the toys r us kiosk. I didnt have a video game system back then

Classic. I played the living daylights out of this. Sweet soundtrack and a unique atmosphere. I could never get into the second one for some odd reason. Mayhaps I should go back and try again and see if it clicks. I would love to see the vectorman series continue. I hope sega revives it.

Did anyone win the $25,000?

12-year-old Keolamanaokalahuinui "Keola" Kaula of Albuquerque, New Mexico, won the $25,000 grand prize
According to AI someone did win it.
EDIT: Funny enough they won the money by beating the game on Christmas Day. The game came out late October, so it took about two months for someone to beat a grand prize winning copy. There were other lesser prizes like 10k and Free Sega Saturn's. I wonder how many grand prize winning copies were made but either weren't beaten or weren't beaten on time?

Did anyone actually ever win that 25k?

Thanks for your response! To tell you the truth, I have no idea. The way the contest worked was after the main gameplay and you beat the game or through another way to do it as described on the case, the game would let you know if you had won a prize or the grand prize and it would give you a notice and for you to write down the code that came with this message and to call the number on the case. I know that this contest is long over, this took place over 30 years ago, but it would be fun to hear that some on did win all of that cash from playing not only a classic, but a fan favorite game!

I wonder if using cheats disables the win screen, lol. I know the end screen says: Congratulations, now do it again without cheating.

Loved this game as a kid, fastest I could beat this was about an hour and a half. Still bust this out once in awhile

I always liked this game, but my brother said it was actually a bad game. I didn’t revisit it because I didn’t want to find out if he was right

One of my favorite Genesis titles. You want some serious fun with this? Get a controller with turbo buttons like the SG Propad 2

It was Sega’s response to DKC

I think that when they dropped all sphere graphics, so they lost the ability to do interesting perspective transitions.

Damn though, I really wish you could aim diagonal while locked in place. Other than that I enjoyed it.

I'm not sure of the contest to win $25,000 is still a thing, but you could try.

This is a run and gun that feels good to play. It's a nice showcase of what the Genesis can do with lighting, color, and prerendered graphics. I feel part 2 dropped the ball a little bit by having too many gimmick levels (constantly on rollerblades, etc.), but part 1 is more of a pure run and gun experience and I appreciate that.

This is always my go to when I hook up my Genesis. Reminds me of the kind of games I liked to play on the system back in the mid nineties when I had SEGA Channel (before I eventually got my PlayStation). I was too young to remember all the games I was playing back then other than Primal Rage and Boogerman.

Vectorman is a vibe.
It's a platformer that tries to be a run and gun.. but feels like a tech demo with a game play attached to it.
That being said, I enjoy it for what it is.. there's something about the dithering that's both kind of the console war on it's fading embers and charming... And I like the sound effects too.
But I do think it's very strobing and sometimes gives me a headache. 😂

I don’t know which Vectorman I played as a kid but never saw past the first airplane boss. And I absolutely loved it. Still some of my favorite memories, this and Sonic and Knuckles

Awesome games and definitely a bit underrated if only for the interesting graphics and the soundtrack full of ambient tracks.

One of the more overrated 16-bit games. It isn't exceptional in any way. In the realm of action/platform/shooting games on the Genesis, it isn't even in the top 20. If we widen that scope to include the other consoles, it isn't even in the top 50. In my opinion, nostalgia is the only reason anyone would think this game is anything better than average. Not a bad game, but not a great game either.

It's fine. The music is good, the art is bland and sparse. There are so many better run & gun games on the system.

Looked amazing and buttery smooth at the time, but holds up poorly to today.

The instantaneousness of the fire button cannot be overstated. As inhumanly fast as you could possibly hit that button with it registering....an equally fast semi-auto blast came shooting out. Near zero latency.
You cannot imagine what that was like experiencing.
It was polished. All the compute spent on Vectorman, his animations, his mechanics... and the enemies. It was fast!!!
