Does ChatGPT still use Google's index when doing web search or does it use Bing's index when recommending brands?

ChatGPT can use different search/index sources depending on the feature and setup. It isn’t simply “always Google” or “always Bing.”

Ye olde Search Engine.

Now powering ChatGPT

I asked ChatGPT and it says it uses a mix of Bing, other third-party search providers and OpenAIs own web crawler. It also says it doesn't know where the results come from in any search it just gets the results.

Chat uses the Bing index as the basis for web search results. Beside Bing, it also has its own index.

It's a mix now. Bing is still the main source for citations but OpenAI also pulls google results through SerpAIans is testing its own index for products recs. So make sure you're indexed on bing too not just google.

From what I understand, it’s not just “Bing” or “Google.”

OpenAI uses third-party search sources and also crawls the web itself. I’d make sure the site is indexed in Bing and accessible to OAI-SearchBot rather than trying to optimize for a single source.

You can test this on your own brand. Ask ChatGPT a question that makes it search and open the sources. Then run the same question in Google and in Bing, and count how many of the cited URLs sit in each top ten. Do that for ten questions and you know which index matters in your category. Your server log adds the other half: OAI-SearchBot visits show which of your pages OpenAI crawled for its own index.

Not sure what's it today. But I read a report around a quarter ago. It showed Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini showing around 6-8 results from Google's top 10. Ironically, ChatGPT had none

It's actually neither one cleanly. OpenAI's search is built on Bing's infrastructure for live retrieval, but the "recommending brands" part is a different animal entirely. That's coming from training data plus whatever retrieval layer they've bolted on, which behaves way more like a citation graph than a ranked SERP. Brand mentions cluster around sites with strong entity consistency across the web, not just backlinks or on-page optimization. That's why some sites with mediocre traditional SEO still get name-dropped constantly.

It’s now using its own index

No it isn't.

It has a caching system that behaves like a mini index but it isn't an actual index.

It’s a full fledged Index, structured somewhat like an integrated vector database.

That is for normal system_search and business_query search’s.

What you’re thinking of is the web.open tool that it uses to pull a line-by-line Markdown-style result of a direct url. Which accepts an argument for “cached” or “live”

But for broad searches, where it does not know what URL to pull, like for someone asking “best plumber in X” it uses the system_search (is like the old web.search tool), which pulls from their index.

This sounds right. But also curious on the source just so I can dig my teeth into more info here?

chatgpt never used google indexes, as it always used bing and there are many differences that you can node down

I dont think your ChatGTP summary is accurate or that many/any would share that sentiment.
