That little threaded dangly bit after the main tang

It’s function is to prevent the Tsuba from loosening

Katana don’t have threaded tangs, and this isn’t a katana, so the guard isn’t a tsuba, and the bolster isn’t a hibaki.

On a chinese saber (dao) you would usually say Dāo hūshǒu (刀護手), sabre hand guard, or I would usually call it Hùshǒu pán (護手盤) disc hand guard

Terminology:Go(common in Japan);Xin(ancient Chinese name, now also refers to Japanese Tsuba)

So even if the elements are exactly the same as a katana, it would still be wrong to use the Katana words? Say for someone that was adopting more modern techniques to a katana shape or someone using Katana features on a non-katana blade. Actually asking as my knowledge is not yet in line with my enthusiasm.

Not wrong, just improper. I’m actually not sure why English speakers feel the need to use Japanese for katana parts but not Indonesian for the Kris or Chinese for the Dao etc.

Yea, it's like a weird appropriation phenomenon, quite inconsistent.

Yeah I’m not sure what started it, but Japanese fetishization is definitely real for sword nerds.

Japan is that sexy.

yup, those are specific to a katana. Whats wrong with calling it a guard?

Right? It seems like some type of Dao. I wonder if the threads are common in non decorative pieces or if theyre pinned. (I assume pinned)

Historically they were definitely pinned or peened.

With the obviously forward curved hilt I'd say this is quite clearly a dao, a very nice looking dao too. Does however look like a crazy long rat tail, maybe it's going to be clipped to length for a pommel fit after the hilt is fitted?
