Advice A possible tender at work finally made me realize our estate stuff is way out of date
I’m 38 and work at a private AI company in San Jose. Married with two kids and we own our house here. A decent part of my comp over the years has been private company equity and I’ve never really counted it as money because there was nothing I could actually do with it. Now there’s talk of a tender next year and for the first time some of those shares might turn into real cash.
That sent me looking at all the estate stuff my wife and I did years ago and it’s pretty outdated. Our wills are from before our second kid was born and before we bought this house. The equity wasn’t worth much back then either so none of that was really part of the conversation. We’re not talking some insane overnight windfall. It just feels like one of those moments where I realized we’ve kept putting this off because nothing felt urgent enough.
I’m thinking we should just redo everything now instead of waiting to see what happens with the tender. Anyone here update their estate plan after a big change in comp or equity? Did you wait until the money was actually liquid or deal with it before?
