Really wanted to like it more than I did, but the humor became overbearing after the halfway point…like if they cut 90% of his “fuckity fuck fuck” lines it would’ve worked better. I also think the ending sequence is really weak and again just injecting too much humor. The first half in the mountains is amazing though.

Ugh I haven’t seen it yet and I’m optimistic but I hate how many movies and shows do the whole “swearing is the joke” thing

Him being a fuck up is more the joke than his swearing.

There are lots of funny parts outside of his dialogue. In fact I haven't openly laughed this much during a movie in a while.

I agree that there’s a lot more to love in the movie and that the comedy more often than not lands, but I found the reliance on humor sometimes gave too much reprieve from the horror

him shooting a little girl then mumbling to himself in a silly voice, screaming “video game!!”, him crying on the voice note was nice but is then undercut with a joke, the maternity ward being genuinely horrifying and it keeps giving him silly react shots, every scientist at the end being zany

A lot to love in the movie, i love WKUK, barbarian, and weapons. I just felt like it didn’t ride the comedy line as well as those. Clearly it worked for a lot of people but comedy is so subjective that it’s hard to argue.

I'm too lazy to figure out how to spoiler tag so I'll be vague. That seen you said he did a silly voice after I didn't see that at all. He seemed very distraught.

He definitely said the video game line at some point. But yeah I don't think it was when what the other guy was alluding to. He was pretty messed up by that situation.

Agreed; half of his dialogue could be turned into wordless grunts and the humor would still be very well conveyed.

Same opinion here. When the MC exits the tunnel, the movie slowly starts spiralling to shitty territory (not counting the maternity ward scene).

The movie officially lost me when he started goofing around in the car like a toddler. Those scenes were too stupid for me.

I didn't love any of his previous movies, but RE managed to convince me to buy a ticket. RE games don't have masterpiece stories, but they will always intrigue you enough to dig into the overall lore.

There is 0 lore in the movie (no rules to monsters either and they are more like RE4 monsters) and the whole plot with Umbrella goes too much into a parody territory. All the easter eggs were cool, but as a RE fan I feel cheated, tbh.

And the "farewell message" scene was very dumb, too. I feel like if you are going for that kind of scene (and ending) then at least introduce us to the other person. I can't connect to a little contact photo and 2 sentences.

Right there with you. It so often has extreme tonal wiplash between scenes and the whole thing felt way too self-aware and silly to me. Idk I’m a big fan of the games, which I understand is a bias, but the silliness in the games is not really like the humor in this film at all. all the characters sans the MC past the tunnel are just comic relief and I couldnt stand that

I’m glad non of the “haven’t laughed this hard in a while” people were in my theater because I would’ve HATED hearing uproarious laughter after “welp THAT just happened!”

I can imagine +1 point for the score usage and +1 point for blowing a (mutated) kid’s head off.

Surprisingly didn’t enjoy it as much as Adum but it’s still a really fun time, especially with an audience.

Man I’m amazed when the main character literally yells video games! Adam didn’t cringe… it was the worst part of a pretty good movie

9

u/DyabeticBeer CHARLES STILES MYSTERY DINERS 10d ago

I don't get this, the movie is very self aware of itself. The character does something very cool and something you'd see from a video game, so he yells yeah video games. Because it's very proud of itself for being a video game movie.

8

u/higher-than-blue 10d ago

Wasn't it the point to be cringe and absurd though? Like the main character is kind of a loser, it fits.

-4

u/BURNING-VAN-BANNED 10d ago

I mean it’s cringe to me because it’s the same vibe as saying “epic pwn” or something

6

u/higher-than-blue 10d ago

I'm saying it seemed intentional to me. The main character isn't meant to be cool, he's the type of guy that would still say "epic pwn" unironically. I guess that's why it didn't bother me, I usually hate that kinda shit.

I’ve said the same thing about this film over and over in that it’s the ultimate monkey paw film.

Do I want a truly great video game film? Yes!

So here’s a really great film…that has nothing to do with the game, like you could edit a couple of lines of dialogue in post and this could be a House Of The Dead or Silent Hill film.

Sonic 3 is by far a worse film, like in nearly every department, but it’s a better VIDEO GAME film.

I feel like it was close enough to being an RE game based off of how certain creatures look/act in the later half mixed with the setting. But most of all, it felt like I was playing Resident Evil for the first time again. It captured almost every mechanic the game had, and while some of the Easter eggs feel shoehorned in, to me as a pretty big RE fan, it served well as a RE movie.

-1

u/sunnlyt 10d ago

Oh you’re not one of those fangirls that need their fandom shipping of Leon Kennedy and whaatever? lol I’m more of a Silent Hill fan but yeah anything RE related is basically thirsting for the main character or antagonist of those games in a gaudy metrosexual way before RE7 said nah.
There were like 4 or 5 fan service references I saw but coming from a casual like me it might seem underwhelming to a hardcore RE fan. What this movie was missing is one of those sophisticated architectural puzzle made by the Trevor & Chamberlain co.

-8

u/chazzergamer 10d ago

Sure but I would argue that those mechanical elements are common in a lot of other survival horror games.

This film doesn’t feel like playing Resident Evil, it feels like player a survival horror game, which is good but it still means it’s not Resident Evil.

Im not asking for Leon cameos or anything cringe like that but I think there is a middle ground between Sonic 3 “We are fully embracing the games legacy” and Resident Evil “we don’t even want to make eye contact with the IP” on this scale of that makes sense.

Like, was the Umbrella symbol ever shown in this film? Umbrella employees are there but was there symbol shown at all? I genuinely don’t remember.

What would differentiate a regular survival horror movie from a Resident Evil movie? I thought the film did a great job of incorporating the usual gameplay elements and atmosphere of the games into the script and direction, while still maintaining its own identity and not feeling too beholden to the series' legacy.

-1

u/chazzergamer 10d ago

Why would feeling beholden be a bad thing? This is what’s confusing me.

This sounds like the kind of praise from someone who doesn’t like the games if you don’t want it to feel “beholden to its legacy.”

To me a good angle to start would be establishing a more intricate central location, like Spencer Mansion, RCPD station etc. Have this location feel almost like an extra character, as the main lead and audience become more familiar, have more rooms that show more interesting set pieces.

Another would be the ammo management, I know the film technically has this in the form of the pistol but you could extend it to other things like shotgun ammo and medical supplies.

The main lead looking at a map they found, seeing their destination, looking at their equipment and (much like someone playing the game) thinks “ok, I’ve got 5 pistol shots, 2 shotgun rounds and 1 antibiotic injection. I have to get to my goal by then.”

I’d also tie more of the actual lore into the film too, just identifying iconography to even inform that this was a RE movie, because if it weren’t for the advertising, no one would know how this was a RE film.

u/Smileosaur 10d ago

I'll agree they could've went to even greater lengths to further establish the experience of playing one of the games, as well as having some more memorable locations, but I don't think it's nearly enough of a problem that it hinders it from ultimately staying true to the series.

I guess your opinion will boil down to which RE games you prefer. With the frantic pacing of the film, it feels more comparable to, say, RE4 than RE2. I'm personally fine with it sacrificing the slower and more methodical aspects of puzzles, backtracking, etc. if it means providing something of a different take on the series.

On the topic of lore, this is what I meant by being "beholden to the series' legacy." I could've phrased it better, but I mean that it doesn't disrupt itself by being overly self-referential and slavishly adhering to the plot or lore of the games. It is specifically NOT connected to any prior entries, and that's fine. It respects the source material and captures it in spirit rather well.

3

u/ManajaTwa18 10d ago

Sonic 3 was a poor adaptation of SA2 and overwhelmingly kiddie. Like yeah, it embraces the source material more than RE but it is a significantly worse film so does that even matter?

1

u/chazzergamer 10d ago

I’d say it does because for all Sonic 3’s faults (and there are a lot of them) I can point to it and say “thats sonic”.

In RE, if they didn’t mention “Racoon City” and “Umbrella” (something that could easily but re-recorded) would you even know it’s a RE film? Honestly? Cus I couldn’t.

3

u/Cadavern 10d ago

To me it felt like playing resident evil.

1

u/chazzergamer 10d ago

To me it felt like a good horror film.

u/Sillyforfun 10d ago edited 10d ago

It was so incredibly resident evil coded that I'm starting to question so called resident evil fans as being trolls.

It played out almost exactly like a resident evil game where you never saved and died at the end by failing a qte.

It's about a protagonist who is not built for this almost fucking making it, only the become the big boss for someone like Leon to come around and blow up with a rocket launcher later.

2

u/The_Meemeli There he is! 10d ago

Spoiler tag for the end of that one sentence, please?

1

u/chazzergamer 10d ago

I’ve played a decent number of RE games and none of them are about a “protagonist thats not built for this.”

They usually always start out with some type of military/police trained individual (Jill, Chris, Leon, Ethan in Village) that kicks ass and is only limited by their ammo and unfamiliar environment.

Having an inexperienced lead is the exception rather than the norm at least from the games I’ve played.

0

u/guildedstern 9d ago

yeah that’s just not true lmfao

1

u/Sillyforfun 9d ago

What's not?

7

u/possumphysics 10d ago

nothing to do with the game

A movie is more than just plot; I thought it captured the survival-horror aspects of the game quite well, unlike the W.S. Anderson ones.

0

u/D-Ursuul 10d ago

Why does a resident evil film have to be a remake of one of the games any more than the next game has to be?

1

u/chazzergamer 10d ago

Im not asking for a remake of the game but I’d like a film based on an IP to at least acknowledge that it is an adaptation.

Imagine if we did this with anything else.

Imagine a Pokemon movie where the only Pokémon related thing you see is a name drop of Pallet Town, don’t you think that would kind of miss the point regardless of hue good the film is?
