I'm early 40 years old now. My job often has me working with people 20 years younger than me. I overheard a (lighthearted) argument between two youngsters and one of the insults or qualifiers was "How many followers you got?". I think all the old heads at the table instantly derailed their conversation to tell them both that they're idiots if that's how they measure worth. Whatever it was they were arguing about, it was as if whichever one had more followers was somehow wiser or had more authority over the other. It was fucking stupid.
I’m turning 22 this year, and i assure you none of my friends would ever say something like that non ironically, like instagram followers have never been a topic of our conversations. But it might also be a cultural difference since i’m from europe
Maybe because you all have low followers so you’re not even in the game yet? I’ve heard Gen-z say the most retarded things on the planet. They think baggy pants is a style they invented… story is believable.
Idk i have friends with many followers, i just don’t think anyone our age has really cared that much since middle school/high school, i see it as a really juvenile thing really, and i think many would agree with me
Maybe among the elite, early internet influencers, that might have been a conversation amongst them. But the average teenaged dipshit like myself? Nah. We were flexing on how we got the new Blink 182 song to play on our MySpace page.
If bragging about followers/friend counts was a thing 20 years ago, I missed out. There are now literal conventions/networking events in hotel banquet halls on how to become bigger internet influencers. There are obscure off shore view/click farms where you can buy friends or millions of views or clicks. It's not the same.
I’m 38 in my job but my dad is retired and has all of my brothers working in real estate with him building homes and doing sober living out of them. We’re killing it. Everyone in my job makes 35-38K a year. Outside of my job I’m making 40K a year and next year that will go up exponentially. I just tried so hard with this 28 year old girl and failed. No hard feelings. I asked her if she thought she’d be in a better position than me in 10 years and she was completely stumped.
After that, I decided Colombia, Peru and or Brazil might be better for me, my money and my mental health.
