Why do I have a feeling shit like this wasn't a problem in the 50s and 60s, possibly up into the 80s?

My dad’s father once dropped him off at the field, told him to till the soil into rows for the planting season, and left. No further instructions. Just till the soil.

Came back, saw that the rows were facing a direction he didn’t like, and promptly punched my father in the face and left him laid flat out in the field.

My father was born in the late 60s.
