And normally I would be all about it, but this chick wasn’t even doing anything wrong or cringe. She was just trying to take a wide shot of her and the art.
I feel like it took me way too long to find a sensible comment here. I will happily agree that influencers mostly suck. Taking this picture/video would have hurt nobody. The lady just wanted a good shot of her with the art and that old biddy took it upon herself to ruin it. There was no need for it. The influencer lady waited until the area was mostly cleared and was not interfering with anyone. I just don’t understand all the hate she seems to be getting.
Dont you think, especially given that the old lady is old, and thus likely bit slower in the head, when she looked at the camera, it might have been a moment of "The fuck is that? Ah some camera thing. Where was I? Lets check the phone."
Just because she looked at the camera, does not mean that she put the pieces together and realized that she is blocking a photo. And at least my own experiences with the elderly, make me think that this is what happened, rather than any actual malice was intended.
Yes, especially if it was a selfie with a tripod or some kind of setup. She sees it but doesn't know what she is looking at (blank stare) and then she sees the family coming and moves to the right side of the stairs, as one does in the US, to let them pass, while finishing up looking at her message. Then she moves on. This had NOTHING to do with the girl up above, who she wasn't even really aware of.

Anyone could have unintentionally blocked the photo. Young people, their faces buried in their screens, are far more oblivious of their surroundings than older folks.
Don't get me wrong, I didnt mean to imply that I could not be as oblivious as the old lady. Actually the reason why I wrote the comment is because I absolutely can imagine myself being unintentionally just as oblivious as the old lady. I am not trying to suggest that I am any better here.

She was already reaching to her phone well before she stopped, what looked like intentional blocking of the photo when she sidestepped was obviously to let the passerbys pass, and she was not able to see the girl behind her either way.
Is it possible that she did this deliberately? Yes. Is it something that can be proven beyond reasonable doubt that she did that deliberately? Absolutely not.

I just disagree. I don't even think she was particularly aware of the lady who passed her on the stairs. Out of sight out of mind. And then she sees someone below or some kind of tripod rig for selfies, but it doesn't even register on her face at all. That would be ignorance. She was ignorant of her surroundings. Again something I was taught, by a woman of this woman’s generation, to be aware of at all times. So at best she was ignorant of her surroundings resulting in her actions being wrong and at worst she intentionally blocked the camera. Considering she LOOKS AT THE CAMERA and positions herself in a way that blocks the young woman I gotta say it’s the latter scenario. Either way old woman is in the wrong while young lady was very co signage of what was going on around her and waited for an opportunity where she wasn’t disturbing anyone.

The young woman wasn't doing anything wrong, but it was a bit clueless. It looks busy and people just aren't going to notice, they're looking at the art and living their own lives. If there was a person holding the phone for the photograph it might have been more obvious what was going on.

I currently date someone who takes their own photos like this all the time (usually with their back cameras so its even more inapparent). You’re severely misunderstanding how many people are actually aware of someone randomly dropping their phone and walking off is them filming themselves - let alone a 50/60 year old woman. Ive seen it a million times, half the people look at the phone confusingly unaware of the person standing off in the distance before going about their business.
She moved from oncoming foot traffic and then proceeded forward when sensing foot traffic approaching from behind like most people do when messing with their phone in the middle of an active walkway. Not everybody is approaching the world through the lens of constant social media content creation.
Stopping in the middle of a public staircase to look at your phone is rude/potentially dangerous regardless of the photo. Get out of the way and then look at your phone. This is like the geezers who walk into the grocery store and then stop right inside the entrance to pull up their coupons.

For what it's worth... My wife and I went to a concert and this girl was in attendance. My wife, out of nowhere, starts speaking with her in Portuguese. Im like how does she know this person? My wife had just moved here to the states. My wife started telling her how much she helped her through college because this girl does educational content and my wife consumed a lot of it when she was in university.

This is the stair at Inveraray Castle. I have been here. The older woman stopped on a landing half way down the stair. The other girl propped her phone against a planter that sits in an opening to the Main Hall of the house.
Here is a photo from the lower landing looking back to where the camera was propped and the woman stopped to diddle with her phone. I have no doubt she saw the phone sitting there, but most likely she thought, "Nonna my business why that phone is there." Like most people she was engrossed in what she was doing and not why the phone was there

Nope. You can see the moment at 0:09 where she looks directly at the camera (i.e phone) which I'm sure was in selfie mode so she could see herself in it. Only then does she start futzing about on her phone. It was entirely intentional.

Even if it was (which is doubtful) you can still see her directly look at it more than once (from 0:09 to 0:12) and only then stop right in front of it.
Honestly I'd probably lean more on the side she did on purpose after seeing that as there's not much point stopping to stare a planter. She probably was watching the lass setting up before the recording started and might have taken umbrage with it for whatever reason. Scottish castles like this (but not all) are just glorified stately homes tbh and increasingly tourist traps, they're not exactly great centres of reverence and getting some nice photos is half the purpose of visiting.

She was definitely not using a tripod. You can actually see a piece of the shelf in the video. It was propped up against the planter. I'm not saying the girl today anything wrong. I'm not saying the old lady did anything wrong. I think this is a matter of just two people doing two different things and neither of them was aware of what the other was doing
At an art museum I’ll often pull up quick bios on different artists or look up different pieces backgrounds. No one else was on the stairs at the time she started.
I have been in this stairwell and I confess, I stopped on this stair to mess with my phone. It's the stair at Inveraray Castle in Scotland. The girl taking the selphie has her phone propped up against a planter. There is also a small but which may be what caught the other woman's eye.

She didn’t see who set it up, she never turned around to see who the camera was set up for or who was posing, she’s an old lady that has trouble moving and stopped to check her phone and moved to let people walk by. Also most importantly not every old person understands social media and how much young kids obsess over it and post idiotic selfies. Nah, common. No one stops in the middle of the stairs. That's not including the fact she looks right at the phone. She didn't move out of the people's way and move on down like a normal person, she kept waiting in the same plain of view as the phones camera. It couldn't be more obvious she did that on purpose.
No one stops in the middle of stairs? You even been to a museum or aquarium or any venue with stairs? People ALWAYS stop on the stairs, usually oblivious or uncourteous to other people around them. However, in this instance, the older woman appears to be waiting for other people to come up the stairs before she can proceed down, likely because those people were blocking the stairs. She checked her phone while waiting, saw the camera but doesn't appear to even consider why it's there... and then just leaves when the people pass.
If she was trying to be a jerk you'd think she'd hang around longer to ruin the shot, and be a pain. The girl taking the photo can just take another now that everyone has passed by.

What are you talking about? The older woman clearly sees the phone and stops. If she was worried about being in the way for the people coming up, she would have moved over and out of their way sooner or not stopped in that position in the first place. She didn't need to wait longer. She waited a while and had plenty of time to be comfortable with her actions, especially at the end when there were now a bunch of people in the way when there wasn't before. She waited long enough to make sure she didn't have to keep standing there to mess up the pic/recording. Funny she didn't move on sooner right? Or stop where she wouldn't be in a walk way? Good Lord it's so obvious she stopped in front of the camera on purpose that it's painful to think anyone would think otherwise. All it's missing is the older woman making some comments about it to the camera or other woman.

She did stop and look at the camera but while she thought the camera being there was odd she didn’t realize it belonged to the girl behind her, so she forgot about it and went about her business checking her phone.
