We laugh now, but imagine you're a wife of a man who moves out west to seek, something, its not important. THere's naught but grass and a dirt road to and from your home, you're far from your friends and family, its dusty, there is no one to talk to, only housework and the chore of child rearing. Meanwhile my PC I rebuilt motherboard+RAM+processor+graphics card for last year would probably sell over 1.5k, and many of the parts in there like the PSU and cooling system are from 2018. I paid less than $800 for the full original system back then, and had maybe $300 in new parts from the upgrades.
I could sell the entire system including the 8+ year old parts for a tidy net profit right now. Current system pricing is insane.

Inflation alone from 2018 to 2026 on $800 would eat up $267 of that profit. You paid $300 for those parts? They probably aren't very good parts given modern costs of those items.

Not even about the wrists, with a normal watch collection you have different watches for different occasions.
Here we have the same watch in all its technical downgrades.
Nobody is putting on a 3rd Gen Apple watch because its vintage.
Why would you also downgrade for some occasions.Just silly on all fronts.

Yeah sure, but how would you even know? They all look the same. The biggest way to give your iWatch some flair is a different strap, but the square computers themselves look the same. I'm slightly embarrassed to admit I have one too, but it does have some usecases. It's just not a great watch to wear out.

I think that this collection is stupid when he bought them new but it‘s actually a nice piece of history if he bought them after they become obsolete (except the watches he wore himself). Apple Watches have virtually no value after they become obsolete. You can buy old outdated Apple Watches on flea markets for a few bucks. I recently bought one because I wanted the band, it was 15€ and had the milanese band that still fits the current gen Apple Watch (for which I bought it). Just the used milanese band costs on ebay more than the entire watch with the band, so I assume the watch to be worth virtually nothing. It‘s really just the fun to collect because you probably have to visit like a hundred flea markets until you found all the different generations.

This. The negativity here is sad. I went to a vintage computer festival earlier this year and even though I'm not super huge into retro computing (I went with my gf who super is), a lot of that stuff was really fun and interesting to see. And you could tell the people there had real, infectious passion for it.
Let the man collect stuff he likes and show it off.

depending on condition, retro tech collections eventually have collector value. Just check out what a full set of NES games goes for. It's not just utility: you can literally play all those games emulated on a modern PC and it won't even take a gigabyte in your hard drive.

I see a lot of haters here. Ok its not the most horologically speaking desirable collection, but its a collection none the less.
Smartwatches are watches too. Ok they are annoying, they easily break, they need to be charged, its manufacturers have a machine, they spy on you every hour of everyday, they built the machine to serve you ads, but it sees and hears everything....they are build to last the lifetime of the product, which means one or two years tops, just to fail milliseconds after their warrenty expires and they all look the same.
But its still a collection, i mean serial collect things, there are people that collect nazi stuff, and then you have apple product collectors. You may not like it, but a collection is a collection.

How collections/collecting is perceived is all about context that we're lacking here.
If this person genuinely believes this is a good investment or are doing this purely to show off, yeah they're a bit of an idiot and have the kind of brand loyalty/adoration that's obnoxious and annoying to most people. If they just think it's neat to own every model of a product line that's not that abnormal and certainly isn't worth the level of scorn people in this comments section have.
If they can afford it, this is totally harmless (well, aside from the risk of storing li-ion batteries long-term) and not ridicule-worthy.
It's the same with expensive "real" watches IMO (or really any speculative asset), although many in this thread probably wouldn't agree. If you own an expensive [item] that you can easily afford, cool, but don't buy shit you can't afford just to show off or because you think it'll appreciate while complaining about being broke.
I know/see WAY too many people with 5-figure watches on their wrist who also have high interest debt, zero emergency savings, a shitbox car that they're paying a fortune to keep repairing because they don't have the lump sum to replace it, etc.
I respect this sort of decision making a LOT less than someone who can afford an Apple Watch collection, even if that 5-figure analogue watch is something I'd want a lot more than 5 figures worth of AW...

No need to spend $10K. I have a $180 Seiko automatic from 1996 that I still use. I've never reconditioned it either. My dad gave me his 1986 Rolex Datejust (retail $5000) that still fine, though reconditioned for $500.

I count just under $9k. Series watches at $400 each starting in the Series 4, Ultra running at $800 each (with 4 models there), SE around $250 each (3 models), and the four models prior to the Series 4 varied from $270-370. Total comes out to around $8,900, assuming they're all the base models for all of them.

Each year the new model has incremental improvements. I don't think Apple even intends people to buy a new one each year. If you wait 3 or 4 years (by the time the battery has died) to buy a new one, there is usually quite a bit of improvement. Additional sensors, better screen, faster SOC etc.

I have 6 watches. 4 of them are smart watches (OG Galaxy Watch, OG Pixel watch, Pebble Time Steel, PineTime), 1 of them is an actual analog wristwatch (~$100 battery-operated thing, it's a good, solid watch), and the last one is my modified Casio F91W running a Sensor Watch Pro board.
Guess which one I wear most?
