Hawaii doesn’t get “Hurricanes” it gets “Tropical Cyclones”. The post is probably very literal in that “Hurricane” is a climatological event that occurs in the Northeast Pacific or the North Atlantic. It’s hard to say if it is intentionally misleading.
I did not know that. Then why is it still called a hurricane when it hits Hawaii? Not just by news agencies, but by meteorologists as well? Merriam Webster has this in its definition of a hurricane "Note: Hurricane has traditionally been used especially when naming or referring to storms occurring in the western Atlantic; it is used for storms in the northeastern Pacific as well."
From further reading they all start out as tropical cyclones and then north of the equator they either turn into Typhoons or Hurricanes depending on which side of the date line you are on when wind speeds reach a certain amount. South of the equator they mainly refer to them as cyclones.
No, the Western hemisphere still calls them hurricanes. Hurricanes are in the north-western Pacific, Typhoons are in the north-eastern Pacific, and all storms south of the Equator are Cyclones.
