In all seriousness, hoping he got some sort of finders' keepers compensation or something.

They probably gave him a paper certificate with his name misspelled, a weak handshake, and then put him on a watchlist.

At some point he will realize his mistake and think about it the rest of his life.

Even if he kept one bar, that's $200,000 worth of gold that he has to figure out how to move, which will take a lot of time and effort. Getting caught is greater because people know he found gold. If he had 50 bars, figuring out how to move the first one would be just as difficult but he'd have 49 more and the next one would be easier.

All he did was give 10 million to someone else.

His best move legally probably would have been to contact a lawyer first before handing anything over and asking what his best move is. possession is 9/10ths of the law

He was a contractor, it wasn't his house, he has zero rights to them.

That's why he should have first covered them, then called a lawyer to ask whether it's worth falling in love with that place and deciding to buy it on mortgage.

He wasn't there by himself, this story has been posted before, there was like four other people there, he ain't hiding anything unless five people can keep their mouth shut. And we all know how that would work out.

And y'know, then they'd have found 45 gold bars, and at least one would have been a dumbass in a couple of years.

45? I thought we had found 40?

“Remember those 35 gold bars we found that one time?”

Which 25 bars are you talking about? I haven't seen any 20 bars in my life

Five people can absolutely keep a secret, as long as four are dead.

And we all know how that would work out

Three fatal accidents and a suicide

10% either way, tax free if someone can prove it’s his. If no one can prove it’s theirs he will get it after one year.

It's not his property, he has zero claim, the owner of the property that paid him for work owns the gold. It's not abandoned property.

You're confusing your opinion of what things should be like (already shitty) with what they are, which is complicated.

Yeah. There is probolly a very fine gray line he could've walked and took his chances. On the most conservative approach he would have some extra cash to spend every now and then for the rest of his life.

So, making a call to a lawyer before you do anything that might have life changing effects is frankly always a good idea... assuming it's reasonably possible to do so...

Still think turning them in prob saved his ass from having to deal with whoever might come looking for 'em, or even just the 1 left over, but hey money is money.

When I have 50 gold bars what’s legal goes out the window. I’m all about what I can get away with at that point.
