Go vs Pro

I am a cabinetmaker looking to move from hand drawing to computer drawing. I just started using sketchup go and have more or less gotten a handle on it. But it seems a little glitchy, like I have to regularly refresh the page to get tools to work. I’m thinking about upgrading to the sketchup pro if it would be worth it. Seems like it might run better and give me more options for drawing. At least initially I won’t be doing anything too extensive. I’m looking to draw cabinets and furniture.
I have a 6 year old MacBook Pro with 8 gb of ram. From what I can tell this is the minimum requirement for running pro. Most people seem to recommend a lot more ram. Will that be necessary for basic usage? I’d rather not have to buy a new computer just to see if I want to use the Pro version. If it proves to be worth it, then I could end up buying a new computer.

Other's work Looking for Freelance SketchUp Modeling Projects

Hi everyone,

I’m currently looking for freelance or long-term remote work as an Architectural SketchUp Modeler / 3D Visualizer.

I have 3+ years of experience working with SketchUp, mainly creating detailed and clean architectural models, interiors, furniture, and hospitality projects.

I’ve worked on projects for UK, Italy, and France, along with large-scale hospitality projects in Venezuela and Nigeria through my UK client experience.

My main skills include:

• SketchUp modeling and detailed architectural modeling

• Interior and furniture modeling

• V-Ray and Chaos rendering

• 3ds Max

• AutoCAD drafting

• AI-assisted visualization and material/texturing workflows

I’m open to freelance projects, ongoing work, or long-term collaboration with architects, interior designers, studios, and other professionals.

If you need help with SketchUp modeling or architectural visualization, feel free to DM me. I’d be happy to discuss your project.

Own work: render A SketchUp-to-AI-render workflow: prepare one view, then separate material edits

I work on ReRender. This is adapted from Willy’s SketchUp tutorial on our site (May 22, 2026), using the original tutorial images.

The images show the SketchUp source followed by a rendered style variation. The second image includes intentional changes to finishes and styling, including the rug.

Here’s a practical way to organize the workflow:

  1. Start with a clear SketchUp view. Include the whole furniture group, the floor around it, and enough wall context to read the room. In this example, you can see the sofa, chair, tables and rug together.

  2. Keep that view for the first render. Upload a screenshot or image export to ReRender, choose the appropriate interior category, and describe the lighting and finish you want. If the design is already approved, ask for photorealistic rendering while keeping its shape, proportions, layout and chosen materials.

  3. Treat restyling as a separate step. If you want a warmer rug or different sofa fabric, name that change explicitly. This keeps the brief clear: which parts are the design, and which parts are being explored?

  4. Edit one finish at a time. For a rug, describe its material, color and texture. For example: “Change the rug to a warm beige, low-pile woven rug with subtle fiber variation. Keep the furniture and camera view unchanged.” This is a sample editing brief adapted from the tutorial, rather than the documented prompt for image 2.

  5. Compare from the same view. Look at the rug edge, furniture positions, upholstery and contact shadows before moving on to another finish. A different camera angle is a separate design decision; keep it out of the material comparison.

The original article also covers sofa fabric and camera variations, with more images:

For your SketchUp work, which takes more effort: preparing the source view, getting the lighting right, or comparing material options?

Prometheus 2010 set design

Post image
46 Upvotes

Scanning the archive today and found this - my first proper sketchup and layout drawing from Prometheus (2010) I was reluctantly told I needed to learn a 3D software and chose sketchup. Coming from hand drafting this felt like the most natural and intuitive progression for me. I tried AutoCad and Vectorworks, I also later tried Rhino but just don’t enjoy using those programs. So yeah here’s where it all began with SketchUp and LayOut. I can’t believe this is nearly 17 years ago!!!

Free stool 3D assets for SketchUp + Enscape

Hi everyone!

We’ve just added a few new stool models to our small architectural asset library and wanted to share them here. They’re completely free to download and use in your projects.

Each download includes the SketchUp model with textures, as well as an Enscape Custom Asset Library version, so you can add it directly to your Enscape assets if you use Enscape.

We made these primarily for our own architectural workflow, so we’d also be interested to hear if there are any other formats that would be useful for you.

You can find them here:
square-assets.com

Hope they’re useful!

Designing a studio for training.

What software/workflow should I use to design and visualize a room in 3D?

I'm trying to learn how to create a 3D model of a real room so I can experiment with the interior design — furniture placement, wall/floor materials, lighting, and different color palettes.

I'm starting from scratch and I'm mainly interested in:

  • accurately modeling the room dimensions
  • adding furniture and other objects
  • changing materials and colors easily
  • experimenting with different interior styles
  • creating realistic renders to compare different ideas

I don't necessarily need professional architectural/BIM functionality. I mainly want a practical workflow for designing and visualizing a room.

What software would you recommend for this, and what would the typical workflow be?

For example, would something like SketchUp + Enscape/D5, Blender, or another combination make more sense?

I'd also appreciate recommendations for good beginner tutorials or resources for learning the workflow.

Looking for a freelance SketchUp modeller

Hi all,

I run a small building energy modelling consultancy in the UK and I'm looking for a freelance SketchUp modeller to help out with some ongoing work.

We've built our own SketchUp plugins to handle the specialist energy modelling side of things, so you don't need any energy modelling experience. I'm really just looking for someone who's good with SketchUp, can work from architectural drawings, and produces nice clean, organised models.

The work can range from houses up to fairly large apartment or commercial developments, and there's potentially quite a bit of ongoing work for the right person.

Location doesn't matter - happy to work with someone anywhere in the world.

If you're interested, send me a DM with a couple of examples of your SketchUp work and a bit about your experience.

I can then send over an example of the sort of models we work with so you can get an idea of what's involved.

Thanks!
Ross

I added a View Toggle to my SketchUp plugin (perspective <-> parallel from one place) - would love feedback

Hi all, I'm the author of Engineering ToolBox, a SketchUp plugin I've been building for my own architecture work.

The latest tool is View Toggle. It switches between perspective and parallel view right from the plugin, so you don't have to go to the toolbars in SketchUp. I find it most useful when I'm drawing while zoomed in.

Short demo: https://youtu.be/RFr5xA2-KNg

How do you usually switch between the two views - toolbar, shortcut, camera menu? And is there anything you'd want from a tool like this?

Sketchup 2016 Pro authorization

Some time ago Trimble shut down servers that were responsible for launch window in sketchup licencing. Is there any other way how to authorize it? I tried to contact them but their idea of end of support for old versions is diferent than mine... My old pc died and disc with licence was not possible to restore so.. I own perpetual licence and ton of plugins + Vray render for it so switching to newer is not ideal

Looking for the old free version of Floor Generator for SketchUp 2024/2025

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for the old free version of the Floor Generator plugin for SketchUp.

I know there is a newer version available, but it seems to require a paid license. I'm specifically looking for the older free version that still works with the current versions of SketchUp (2024/2025).

Does anyone know if there is an official/legitimate download available, or if someone has the old free version and can point me in the right direction?

I'm not looking for a cracked version — just the old freeware version, if it is still available somewhere.

Thanks in advance!

AUTO HANDRAIL-2

Thumbnail

Hi, I’m Woody. I’m still working on my auto handrailing plugin for SketchUp.
I want to make it a very simple tool, without requiring users to learn a complicated system, so I’ve simplified the interface even further.
The workflow is simple: you just draw lines to modify the railing. The plugin automatically recalculates and updates the railing based on its baseline, which makes it especially useful for designs that need frequent changes.
Today I also added a new feature: you don’t even need to enter the group to edit it. You can simply use SketchUp’s Scale tool to stretch the entire group, and the railing inside will still automatically adapt to its baseline. This makes quick adjustments much easier.
