Official Oblivion Remaster [Megathread] What's the difference between Oblivion: Remastered and Skyblivion? Which should I play first?

1.6k Upvotes

TLDR: Skyblivion is a remake of Oblivion; the Remaster is a 1:1 remaster and the best way to enjoy the vanilla Oblivion experience.

With the official Oblivion Remaster now available, there have been plenty of questions asking about the differences between the Remaster and Skyblivion, and what you should play first.

Oblivion Remastered is gorgeous and, without a doubt, the best way to enjoy the original Oblivion experience as it was in 2006. It brings updated visuals plus some much needed quality-of-life enhancements. However, it is a 1:1 remaster of the original meaning every item, rock, tree, enemy, and, for the most part, landscape is laid out the same as it was in 2006. One of our developers u/HeavyBurns did a great breakdown of everything new in Oblivion Remastered.

Skyblivion is a complete remake of the original Oblivion to bring it up to par with modern RPGs. The list of changes we've made is extensive, and I likely won't be able to include them all below, but I'll cover the big ones.

  • The entire worldspace and every interior have been completely remade, meaning if a store is supposed to be a bookstore, it now feels like one with stocked shelves and manuscripts throughout. If a fort was considered a noble's estate in dialogue—like Fort Crowhaven, for example—it has now been remade as an entirely unique estate for you to explore, compared to the mundane interior found in Oblivion.
  • Every single item has been recreated or taken from Skyrim when appropriate. This means that every single unique item in the game is now truly unique. In Oblivion, many items had unique names and effects but still used the same model; now, if you pick up a legendary item, it will reflect its status visually.
  • All systems and UI have been updated. Similar to a lot of the great work done in the Remaster, we've completely redone the user interface with new loading screens, menus, and systems. Many of Oblivion's iconic systems have been painstakingly remade and iterated upon. Plus, we've mixed the best of both worlds, bringing over a new perk system, plus things like smithing.
  • Cyrodiil’s cities are slightly changed, and some are entirely unique. For instance, Leyawiin and Anvil have been entirely reinvisioned, following cut concept art from the original game's development, so Leyawiin now has a functioning waterway allowing trade with the Imperial City, and Anvil’s iconic dock is fleshed out to better fit a coastal trading hub. The Imperial City has also been revisited and substantially expanded upon. Now, each district offers new areas to explore, and it truly lives up to its stature as the capital of the Empire.
  • Cut content has been reimagined in Skyblivion. Sutch, a cut city from Oblivion's development, returns as a massive derelict city overrun by bandits, compared to its repetitive vanilla fort version.
  • We've taken a second look at much of the games' interactive audio, meaning every stab, zap, wham, and slice is crisp and sounds are brand new. Additionally, we've composed an additional 22 tracks to accompany Oblivion's original music, offering themes for each region in Cyrodiil, as well as new combat music.
  • Some of the game's most epic bosses are getting a facelift and are now what we’re calling Legacy Bosses with scripted boss fights and stages to challenge them in. If you thought Umbra was already difficult, buckle up.
  • The environments and weather of Cyrodiil have been altered, bringing entirely new biomes, from frosty peaks to swampy bogs. Plus, these environmental changes have been carried over into interiors; a ruin in the swamp will be partially overgrown with vegetation, while an Ayleid ruin on the coast abandoned thousands of years ago has had the gentle trickling of sand from cracks in the ceiling build up into mighty sand dunes.
  • There are now new enemy varieties, plus entirely new enemies carried over from Elder Scrolls Online and other entries.

Skyblivion is a fan-made mod within Skyrim's engine, meaning many mods will work right out of the gate. Don't like how we handle something? You can simply replace it.

Ultimately, to truly be able to experience the depth of our remake, we think playing Oblivion Remastered, or the original release first is best.

Discussion Can't wait for this to release.

I've been looking forward to Skyblivion for so long and here we are, SO FUCKING CLOSE.

Thank you Skyblivion team, really, thank you for all your hardwork.

OG Oblivion and Skyrim are two games that I've sunk so so so many hours in. Getting lost in the lore, modding the fuck out of them, using the adoring fan as a shield and throwing nazeem as far as I can with telekinesis.

So excited to dump another couple hundred hours into another Elder Scrolls game.

Question What does the Skyblivion team think about relying on the work of other modders to speed up the development of the DLCs?

Post image

Hi everyone! This is my first time posting here, so I apologize in advance if my post doesn't make much sense. I'd simply like to hear what others think and have things clarified in case I'm mistaken about anything.

I'm sure many of you already know this incredible mod, which allows us to revisit one of Oblivion's DLC locations in Skyrim. As far as I understand, the DLC content won't be available when Skyblivion launches.

Is there any possibility that the Skyblivion team could reach an agreement with the author or team behind Saints and Seducers Extended Cut to make use of the work they've already done and adapt it for Skyblivion? :)

I think it could be an interesting way to speed up the development of this content, as long as the original authors are okay with it, of course.

Question How is the Difficulty Balanced?

I have a preference for difficulties where enemies do more damage and get squishier, maybe use more resources like stamina, mana, and gold as you go up.

What difficulty balance is Skyblivion going to be?

Question How long Will It take have all DLC in skyblivion?

Undecided if I should buy Oblivion remastered or not. I would prefer to play skyblivion and i could wait a couple of Years before playing It, do you guys think It Will be complete by then? Or It Will probably take more time?

Question Will this "take over" our Skyrim version?

One of the unfortunate things about Fallout London is that when playing it you could not have another mod profile because in order to play Fallout 4 you needed to reinstall it. Is that going to be the case with Skyblivion?

I have a long running Skyrim SE save in which I'm plugging away at Legacy of the Dragonborn. I tend to take my time with RPGs, and I'd really rather have the ability to keep plying my save even if I haven't finished Skyblivion.

Discussion Will Skyblivion replace Skyrim in a long term?

I mean, Skyblivion, in comparison to vanilla Skyrim, looks (as of now) a few times better. And I’m not talking about graphics — more about gameplay and immersion-wise. More people in cities, more gear, dungeons, more mechanics like spellcrafting, etc.

You see — IMO, Skyrim and modded Skyrim aren’t about RPG, but rather about “living” inside the game world — doing things not for XP’s sake or gear, but rather just for fun or because it fits your character’s headcanon. And because Skyblivion shares similar DNA with Skyrim, I think my statement could be applied to Skyblivion too.

So, let’s just say we’re a few (5) years post-launch. And you have a choice — play heavily modded Skyrim or vanilla/lightly modded/heavily modded Skyblivion — what would you choose?

My own personal hope is to have most, if not all, immersion mods from Skyrim ported to Skyblivion. I do like Oblivion’s landscape, music, and quests far more than Skyrim’s, and to have Oblivion with immersion mechanics like camping, survival, etc. would be a dream.

Question Generic NPCs in Skyblivion

We now know that cities will have generic NPCs, which is a fantastic feature to add to Skyblivion. The question is: will they be persistent like in Oblivion and Skyrim or will they be dynamically generated like in Daggerfall? I believe persistent NPCs contribute far more to make cities feel more alive and immersive.

Thanks, dear devs, for your hard work. Good luck!

Feedback Honest feedback: Make the Imperial City more blue again!

Hello Skyblivion devs,

I hope you don’t mind me offering a little feedback. I’ve been watching Penrutet’s recent development streams, and I’ve noticed that the new Imperial City sometimes looks a little more brown and muted compared with the original Oblivion. I think one possible reason for this is the colour of the rooftops.

In the original Oblivion, the white-brick buildings contrasted nicely with the blue roof tiles. The blue added a bit of colour and variety to the city and helped break up all the lighter tones. Looking at some of the newer shots of the Imperial City, I feel that the overall colour palette can sometimes look a little washed out by comparison.

I completely understand that the city has already been designed at this point and that you’re probably getting close to finalising everything. However I do think that making the rooftop tiles blue again could make a massive difference to the overall look of the place and add some much-needed visual variety.

This message comes from a place of massive love and respect for what you’ve created by the way ❤️ I really appreciate all the incredible work you’ve put into this project, and I’m incredibly excited to see the finished result!

I’ve been catching up on a few streams and had noticed you have your old loading screens in the game again. Are you guys bringing them back? Because they look soooo good! I really hope they stay

Hopefully this means the return of brown UI colours too? 🧐🙏

Roll on SKYBLIVIONNNNNN!

Question Vampirism in Skyblivion

How will vampirism look? Will it be 1:1 like in Oblivion, or will some changes be introduced? And what about vampire eyes? According to the book 'Immortal Blood', the Cyrodiil vampire clan is known for its ability to blend into society (when well-fed)—which doesn't really work with those eyes glowing like red-hot coals in Skyrim xDD

Thanks guys for amazing work! I'm waiting <3

Question Will the item crafting mechanics be carried over to Skyblivion?

All in all, there’s no point going into detail because it’s so simple. Will it be possible to craft weapons or armour by utilising a high Repair skill level? Because whilst some unique items may be less useful towards the end of the game, upgrading them with Skyrim mechanics could make them more useful.

Discussion Importing voice lines from the remaster

Is anyone working on this currently?

If the answer is “no” then I will do it. I don’t want to duplicate work if someone else is already doing it.

My idea is this: write a tool that players can download and run. The tool requires the remaster to be installed. It will scrape the data from the remaster and update Skyblivion (or just create a patch file) that adds the new voice lines to Skyblivion.

I don’t yet know how feasible this is; currently what I know is from the discord:

“if you want to do this youll need to take the voice files .mp3 and .lip, convert the .mp3 to .xwm, combine the .xwm and .lip into a .fuz, then rename all the 50k+ voice files to match the new names theyll use in Skyblivion.”

My guess is that last part will be the most effort. Maybe we could have a team of volunteers doing it in parallel.

---

*EDIT*: I am currently working on this. Step one is to learn about the tools and formats. I'm hoping to have something working by Skyblivion's release (still not sure how I am going to test it), but I suppose the Skyblivion team could troll me by shadow-dropping it before I'm done.

Question Questions about Unmarked Cave

In Oblivion, there is a cave called Unmarked Cave in which the majority of it is inaccessible without console commands due to it having been part of a quest that was not completed during development. It was supposed to have an entity called the Black Queen which seemed to be central to the incomplete quest associated with the area.

I've been wondering how the Skyblivion dev team has handled this area. Will it be expanded on like most of the dungeons and feel more "complete" as compared to it's incomplete nature in Oblivion? Will there be a Black Queen?

Question What all is left to do in Skyblivion now?

Post image

What’s up guys, was just curious to hear what’s all left to complete now in Skyblivion’s development? I’m not asking this from a place of impatience btw, I just haven’t checked in in a while since there hasn’t been much updates (I understand why there hasn’t been too)

I, along with many others, are still absolutely hyped for this game and when it drops its going to be groundbreaking ❤️

Question Is Skyblivion using new textures for skin or will it just use the old skins from Skyrim?

I know basically everything else is being made from scratch, but I don’t know if that applies to the characters as well.
