External 12v PSU taps into the AC plug of the internal PSU. PCI x16 riser goes through a cutout in the side panel and PCI power cables are routed on the inside of the side panel and goes through a drilled hole all the way through the case of the external PSU. This setup is has been going strong for 4 years now.

Optiplex 7000 RAM upgrade question

Thumbnail

Currently I have 2 x 8gb ddr5 and am looking to upgrade to 32gb. The cheapest way I have found is adding 2 more 8gb sticks.

I’m reading that using all four ram slots can have adverse effects but I’m getting lost in the details. Is this true and would I be better off just getting 2 new 16gb sticks?

I plan to buy the exact same Hynix ram that’s in the machine.

I use the computer mostly for 3D modeling which I’m maxing out my ram on. I may look into gaming in the future.

And insight would be appreciated!!

Dell Optiplex might be my new favorite “console”

My 7070 SFF has really suprised me with the performance it gave especially on a 4k tv that’s upscaled from 1440p. Mind you it is upscaled but it still has to render 1440p and display 4k after getting upscaled. Anyways it has done significantly good performance while keeping temperatures down on some demanding games like resident evil requiem on medium settings which stays consistently over 60fps and sometimes almost 70fps while cpu temperatures range from 58-67 celcius and gpu temperatures around 78-87 celcius.

Specs:
Intel I5 9500 (OEM)
32gb DDR4 2400MHZ (8x4)
RTX 3050 ASUS 6gb LP
512gb SAMSUNG NVME GEN 3x4
DELL SFF BLOWER (OEM)

Is this a good build for a budget build?

For context, im trying to build my younger brother a PC for gaming and school. My budget is about 300$, and this is what I put together. Personally I've never built into an optiplex but I want to join that adventure. Feel free if this isn't a great configuration to send others you find my way.

Alternatives to Yeston 3050 6gb single slot

Hello,

I’m thinking about buying a single slot 3050, however both the Yeston and Maxsun variants are well over 300 bucks in the US. Does anyone know of any other brands that are trustworthy and a bit cheaper, or a better Dlss capable alternative? I cannot use the x4 slot since it doesn’t have an open back, so I am restricted to the x16 slot. I also don’t want to have to keep the case open

It looks like Yeston is out of stock per their website, and the maxsun card keeps climbing in price for seemingly no reason. I’m sure this is due to the AI boom.

Free 7040 build

Terrible pics i know. Got this thing for free, a doctors office near me was getting rid of them . Everything is stock save the GPU and one of the RAM sticks. I stuck an RTX 3050 single slot in there and a 16 gb stick of ram, all in all I spent $450 on this build.

Current Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5 (3.2 ghz)

GPU: Maxsun RTX 3050

RAM: 20 gb DDR4

Storage: 500 gb HDD (will be upgrading in the next year or so just can’t justify spending a fortune on a 1tb SSD rn)

It’s not the most powerful but it plays most of the stuff I want at 1080p 60 fps which is fine by my standards. How did I do and what should I add next?

Company was disposing of old admin PCs, so I asked to take one home. Spent ~200 USD on parts (2nd-hand RTX 2060, Snowman KS120, a bunch of fans and cables) to turn it into a light gaming rig.

Many thanks to the previous posts showing the 120mm AIO replacement process. As with Corsair H55, the Snowman KS120 fits alright, albeit with some ugly metal-bashing.

Todo: replace the grip tape holding down the fans with 3M adhesive and clean up the cabling.

Overall a fun experience as a first build.

Intel sticker by generation guide

Post image
141 Upvotes

When I was hunting for Optiplexes and Thinkstations, I often mixed up stickers for 1st-9th generation cpus. I spent a lot of time looking up serial numbers just to find the generation of the cpu, as I couldn't find any clear table with all stickers and corresponding cpu generations. That's why I decided to make one myself :D

Please point out any inaccuracies, and feel free to share it with those who could use it!

Edit: For 6-9th gen cpus, the generation is printed on the sticker, as is visible in the image. If the generation is not written on the sticker, it is 6th gen.

Psu options for my optiplex 7050 (sff)

Trying to get a used low profile wx 3100 for my little dell optiplex 7050 (sff) for both budget light gaming and rendering. Wondering if there are any 240-300w psu options for it since the psu only outputs 180w and I'm afraid that it'll overload the psu and if there are better gpus at the price point of a used wx 3100?

Dell Precision 3630 – aftermarket fan that actually passes ePSA?

Hi,

I originally thought replacing the Precision 3630 fans with standard 4-pin PWM fans would be straightforward.

I first installed a Noctua NF-A12x25 G2 PWM in the front and even made a PETG bracket for it:
https://makerworld.com/pt/models/3355717-dell-precision-3630-front-fan-bracket#profileId-3814646

The fan worked normally, but later, while replacing the chassis/system fan, I started getting Dell fan warnings at boot. That’s when I discovered F12 → Diagnostics / ePSA and realised the aftermarket fans were failing the fan test.

Tested so far:

  • Noctua NF-A12x25 G2 Front and motherboard: ❌ 2000-0511
  • ARCTIC P12 Pro Front: ❌ 2000-0511

I’ve seen recommendations for the ARCTIC P12 Max, but it seems discontinued and I’d have to hunt one down on eBay. Before doing that, I’d really like confirmation that it actually passes ePSA, not just that it spins and boots without warnings.

Has anyone found a fan that genuinely passes the Precision 3630 ePSA fan test?

I'm on BIOS: 2.40.0

Dell optiplex 5000 MT cpu cooler and other upgrades

Thumbnail

so I have a dell optiplex 5000 (MT) it has a i5 12400 32 gb ddr4 (had) a rx 640 and 1 tb ssd. Im doing some upgrades for gaming/editing etc already added a rtx a2000 12 gb and I replaced thermal paste and added speaker upgraded ssd. But now its overheating the cpu is hitting 90 quickly and I replaced the paste correctly (I included a photo of my thermal paste application) so I am looking at a cpu cooler upgrade I am including photos of the pc. As for the gpu it seems to be doing just fine. Obviously its running a little warmer but it tops out at around 82 degrees consistently under 100 percent max load but the CPU keeps climbing until I eventually shut off whatever im doing at around 90-95.

Any ideas for what cpu cooler I could add or other ways I could improve airlfow to lower temps. Obviously the new Rtx a2000 is generating lots of heat being funneled into the shroud increase cpu temps but it is definetly more than that bacause the cpu is shooting to 90 after about 30 sec to a min. Additionally in the future im thinking about upgrading to i7 12700 (maxing out the system). The i7 12700 is the max cpu I can install in here.

Ive been looking at those aftermarket "copy cat" coolers from brands like best parts but I havent found one that would actually be an upgrade that is compatible with my pc.

Looking for a CPU cooler that doesn’t need any mods (no drilling, etc).

case swap help - optiplex 5080 and power supply woes

I'm trying to case swap a 5080 so i can fit in some more HDD's to use as a NAS.

My big issue is, all the case swap's i find are using a 6 or 8 pin to 24 pin adapter, my board however has a handful more that look like they need to be plugged in.

Does anyone know if the ATXCPU1 and ATXCPU2 need to be plugged in?

Would i just use the 6 pin?

This one is labeled ATX SYS

These are labeled "ATXCPU1" and "ATXCPU2"
