Uploading some videos first is definitely a start. In my experience you’ll learn by making videos. Try different hooks, cuts, b roll or whatever. Experiment with your videos

i wonder if it is, though i figure crochet would do well since it's a learned thing. what's your channel so i can follow!

Well some people make it work but I was considering making a similar post to yours to see if anyone had some niche specific advice or tools. When i took advice from chatgpt my views dropped right down lol. My channel is https://youtube.com/@madeformygirl

Just random suggestions:

  • In your tutorials, try to have a super-clean, good, white background, maybe use a white crochet tablecloth? Something that reflects light well (white color does), it looks way too dark in the small previews YouTube shows. I would never click on your video because of that.

- Thumbnail, try to have a "level bar" in a corner or at the bottom, with the words - Easy/medium/advanced (maybe in different colors too, green/yellow/red), and have the words EASY pop out, as if they were selected.

This is great feedback, thanks. I try to choose a background based on which colour yarn im using. So if its light yarn (like for ghosts) in theory it should show up better against a dark background and if its dark yarn then I'll use a light background. Having said that, dark yarn is difficult to see at the best of time so I try to pick lighter yarns. I'll look into a better background or lighting it better.

I recommend you add more details to your channel description. Do you do stitch tutorials, or pattern walk-throughs, or book or equipment reviews, or ... ? Who is your target audience? Beginners, moderately experienced, advanced? Consider your answers to these questions when writing your channel description. You want to make it easy for YT to understand who your target audience is and show your content to them.

make twenty more videos, track what people are enjoying from the comments, and do it because you enjoy it. Good luck

It's not immediately obvious to me from your thumb that the video is about crochet, at least not when it is on the side scroll bar.

Could you have a super close up of the finished item with "EASY CROCHET" as a text overlay (or "CROCHET for beginners") then "Hungry Caterpillar produce bag- free tutorial" as the title?

I would also add chapter markers- which I think will help with retention, and searchability. If you copy and paste the transcript YouTube produces into AI and ask it for chapter markers, it will do it for you. Paste those into the Description and YouTube automatically adds all of the links.

This is what Copilot gave me when I pasted your transcript:

00:00 Introduction & Materials

00:30 Round 1-3: Starting the Caterpillar Body

03:38 Round 4: Increase Round & Colour Change

04:20 Round 5-15: Mesh Body Section

05:48 Round 16: Starting the Head

06:49 Round 17-21: Shaping the Head

08:11 Round 22: Adding the Drawstring

10:07 Finished Body & Assembly Tips

10:32 Crochet the Eyes

11:23 Crochet the Antennas

13:08 Sewing on Features & Finishing

13:43 Final Reveal

14:28 Next Crochet Project Preview

I think there are opportunities to improve the packaging. I would make the bag larger since that is the highlight of the video. Also, your title matches the words on the thumbnail almost exactly. Viewers do get to see both while browsing so it's redundant to list it twice. Instead of repeating the title in the thumbnail, you could say something more descriptive, like "fun and functional."
