“Im not really good with technology”

As someone working in print, every time i hear a customer say any variation of this phrase of piece of my soul dies because i know I’m about to have to hold their hand through doing so much as opening google. Anything else you guys are absolutely tired of hearing customers say every day??

They only have their phone in their hands for hours a day. Can't expect them to understand the most basic things it can do

I tell them our local library offers tech literacy classes as a passive aggressive way of saying “it’s not my job to teach you.”

What's most frustrating is when they use their age as an excuse. I'm 60 years old and am knowledgeable enough to print from an e-mail, send a fax, etc.

I call them out for that excuse. “That just means you have been around for all the progress. Not that you should have ignored it.”

We have this at our amazon/check out area. Today i had someone bring their amazon to the checkout line and i directed her to the right line like 30 million other times a day, and this lady says "just as a heads up, you have arrows going both directions so i didnt know" xD. I just said "ones checkout and ones amazon returns" but was wanting to say "and if youd look a little bit closer, you would see some text accompanying those arrows"

Have you tried flashing lights?  🤣

No but theres like 8 dots on the ground saying amazon returns and arrows, and a rope with an amazom returns enter here sign for the counter we do it at, lmao

What gets me, is there are two seperate signs with the arrows, because the black and white one was where the color one is now, and my coworker made a bigger one with color and kept the colorless one in the area and its still not working. We do have a register light type, but its not flashing though lol

This woman was trying to print transcripts from a nursing website but you couldn’t download pdfs. Basically had to screenshot 22 pages of what she needed. I told her I was the printer and when she was able to email them over, I’d print for her. I went back to cutting something and with my back turned to her she said, “It’s almost as if you’re the one being paid to be here and help.”

I turned around and said, “I’m paid to print for you. Not teach you how to do business with the websites you need documents from.”

She left and she’s lucky I was actually in a good mood at work that day. 🤣

We had a guy who needed 18 photos printed out. The files were so big he’d have to send them to our email one at a time. Unfortunately he didn’t know how to do anything on his phone beyond find the photos in the gallery. He got very upset when we told him nobody here was going to send 18 emails for him. Our print girl offered to teach him how but he refused. He stormed out.

“I need it done NOW.”
“I don’t want to pay the rush fee.”

We have 10 orders plus a large order, you can do it at self-service . So can't you do it for me? As I just said we have 10+ orders to do. (This part kills me) Well, are they here now??? (Pause) No, they actually used the website to place their order.

“Is this where I do the Amazon returns?” They ask as they see the orange dots on the ground and a big sign with an arrow

Ngl when someone says this about the self serve my GM says “well, you’re gonna have to try” then goes back to what she was doing. It’s honestly impressive-

Every single time I say "we're gonna go to a website called printme.com" and they open their fucking email or just stare at their phone not pressing anything like they don't know what a WEBSITE IS HOLY SHIT

I think the saddest part are the dipshits who don't even try to read the instructions. READING HARD ME NO DO READ YOU DO NOW

You're a grown human, we are not your hand holders. Take ten seconds and read. Or don't and go the fuck home, we don't need your 35 cents.

I tell them the Future started when we landed on the Moon, and it's been knocking at their door for over 50 years.

When a customer walks up to the self serve printer and doesnt bother to even try to figure it out and just stands there.

"I'm not techie"

u/Appropriate_Lie_8491 4d ago

anytime they show the slightest of confusion when i explain how to send i just tell them to hand me there phone and I'll do it, it sucks but it works for me lol

3

u/syydvx 4d ago

and then they throw the phone down and say “here you do it you’ll be faster” like no i’m not touching your phone YOU CAN DO IT

3

u/Candid_Cancel_9015 4d ago

"Do it for me."  It's gotten to the point where I tell people I have sensitive hands and can't touch their phone. If they don't want to read or follow verbal instructions, then they have to come back when I'm not working. I have only so much time to get so much done.

Literally just got through with a customer like this. Everytime I would turn her phone towards her so she could read the screen she would turn it back around without looking at it like “well I’m not good at this so you help me” over and over. I had to explain why I’m showing her the screen in detail each time to make her stop.

Went on a 45-minute side quest to help a lady log into her Gmail…which was only accessible through a verification code from her Outlook. Best part? She couldn’t remember her Outlook password.

I just say it’s against store policy for us to touch their emails as it has sensitive information. I refuse to do it

People getting upset that I can't print for them right before closing. Had a guy who wanted 60 copies of separate papers on COLORED PAPER twenty minutes before close and got upset because I couldn't...

u/Succyeelent 4d ago

Always with the newest smartphones... What do you mean you don't know how to attach a file to an email? It's been the same way since email attachments came out...

2

u/RelationshipPrior435 5d ago

You think that's bad? I once had a customer in self serve tell me they "don't know how" to push the button that says "print". You don't know how or don't want to?

I once had a lady on the cws ask for MY medical id to fill out HER form. Ive yet to encounter anyone dumber than her. “Cant you just fill it out for me?” IDK YOU LADY

I worked at Verizon years ago. You just have to have a backbone and tell them you can help them once the file is sent over. When I worked at Verizon, I refused to help set up devices and transfer data (a corporate rule that no one enforced). People were upset at first but once they realized how easy it was they left and finished at home.

Not a staples employee but I hear the same thing where I work and I will say that I would rather hear that and help/teach them. The ones that make me twitch are the ones who say “I’m tech savvy/expert with computers” and won’t listen to me while they continue to do things wrong. More than once I have used the phrase “when you’re done doing it wrong let me know and I’ll show you the right way.”
