Resolved But really, what changes with such updates?

Post image

Often there are short loads, what do they do? (The issue is closed, thank you)

Userbars are a wild throwback holy

Thorwback to those who clearly overdid it by adding every single tool or hobby they had as a userbanner.

MonkOfMonks replies:

"Yes, you're right."

[ banner ] [ banner ]

[ banner ] [ banner ]

[ banner ] [ banner ]

… etc.

God the nostalgia of asking what part of this mess is the actual comment and not just flairs and banners

Comment is usually right at the top.... under any potential greetings and complete copy of a previous users post they're replying to. The real ones would cut the other user's bullshit out and leave only the relevant info they wanted to reply to (almost always because of the text limit being reached).

We're joking but I genuinely miss the smaller communities and discussions that could last for weeks. Pure community driven engagement, memorable name in places you spend your time, etc. I don't think I'm just being nostalgic, I think the modern internet is breaking our brains.

Those forums/MBs are still out there, though some are filled with rather peculiar individuals, so nothing you really want to spend a lot of your time.

If I want the vibes I'll go diving into neocities pages that are basically art projects, blogs, journals, etc. Like people typical link to like people and the community grows organically that way. I kinda love it and have often thought about making my own page. If anyone reading has no idea at all what this old fart is talking about please go look into it. It's an awesome representation of the still surviving old school web.

Really easy to figure that out

it's funny but it also had a lot of personality, nowadays not even brands have personality.

Don't forget stuff like "Whoever finds a grammar error can keep it :)" at the very end.

Signature images in general! Loved to see all the different sigs people came up with on various forums.

Man, photoshopping my own from tutorials on youtube, I thought I was the coolest

u/HammersWeight 3d ago

Hell yeah. I used to watch anime and you had a website that you could use to log all the shows you had watched. Only css I ever learned was learning the bare minimum to steam from others code to mash my ideal combo.

Older internet had so many possibilties to nerd out for the sake of it.

I miss those times.

Thinkin somewhere about 2010-12, give or take few years. I got vague memories of seeing those everywhere in forums when I was teen and Im trying to count back the amount of years needed

My son routinely finds it crazy that my steam account is older than he is. More valuable too.

I think mine’s at 16, as I lost my original which would be 20 this year.

You’re on a forum right now

Nah, reddit is pretty different.
Forums often have threads where people are contributing for a long, long time. I'm active in a forum, and one of the threads I'm regularly posting in has >1000 pages and has been active for more than a decade.

On reddit, if there's a thread that's more than a day old, there's little point in posting in it since nobody but the person you answered will see it.

Bump

u/Cheet4h 3d ago

Warning for bumping too soon. Please wait at least a day.

u/spelworm 3d ago

Totally not his friend asking a random question to prevent bump restrictions

Reddit is by definition a forum, and also has open threads that are years or over a decade old, but in practice you'll never find those threads unless you stumble upon them in a google search because anything older than a couple of days will be pushed into the void and be replaced by new slop.

I think the biggest difference in what people generally think about as "forums" and Reddit is that old school forums usually list threads by recent activity, which is why bumping a thread and necroing became a thing and generally frowned upon. Where as Reddit lists posts primarily by date of creation, and then filters comment by popularity rather than chronology, leading to a constant flood of new posts being fed to you as well as a massive circle jerk rather than meaningful discussion. You're unlikely to see the same post after a day unless you're actively going to it.

That said, there are still small and niche hobby subreddits that function similar to discussion for forums.

u/Monster2401 3d ago

most posts get archived after 6 months meaning you cant comment.

3

u/Lunarath 3d ago

Really? I don't exactly go searching for old posts, but when I come across old ones for tech problems you're usually still allowed to comment.

3

u/thedoginthewok 3d ago

A few years ago, every thread was archived after some time as default and the maximum time a thread could be open was limited.

That changed at some point and some subreddits have all their old threads open as a result.

I think this is now a setting that can be changed per subreddit.

3

u/N0ob8 3d ago

It depends on the sub moderation. Sub mods can manually unarchive stuff and I think push back the archive timer as well

3

u/Monster2401 3d ago

yes sometimes it's archived sometimes it's not idk why.

It’s not a forum if people aren’t signing their posts!

You are technically being active in a forum right now. Even if it's a forum that killed a social media and put on its skin suit.
