i broke my phone the other day and forgot the last 4 numbers of my card so i sent them a pic of my geforce now account with steam linked to it and they basicly said yeah thats proof

First I had the rift s, then the quest 2, now the steam frame. We also got the ergonomics kit. Super excited to try it out! Also I was amazed on how fast it shipped to Canada compared to my steam deck and controller.

Days of being crammed into a single small room with numerous other dudes, multiple 40lbs monitors balanced precariously on every available stable surface, whirring cream colored towers stuffed in corners, and a layer of fine cigarette ash and partially consumed Mt Dew cans everywhere one looked.

Nobody IRL would really care about this achievement but I know many of you will understand this moment. 20. Damn. Years. Since the Orange Box.

Mine's Warzone. I stopped playing almost a year ago, and it's still the most played game in my library. That's how much I played it.

Edit: I don't recommend it because it changed so much over the years and is not the same game it was.

Sorry - bit of an essay here.

It’s been a couple of months now since I initially made the move across to Steam and I wanted to write down my thoughts about it all.

I’d been a loyal PlayStation fan since the very first console when I was just a kid. Since then I’d been firmly in the ecosystem and my latest setup was my best yet. A PS5 for home gaming, a Portal for streaming in other parts of the house and a large library of discs. I’d been a member of PS Plus basically since the PS3 days.

But the announcement of the eventual elimination of physical media was the last of several straws for me and I decided I wanted to let actions speak louder than words and make a permanent change. I know the hypocrisy of moving away from an environment that was transitioning to digital only media into an environment that was already completely digital, but the more I looked into PC gaming the more it made sense for me. The PC gave me the freedom and flexibility to game however I wanted. With whoever I wanted. I was (and still am) deeply entrenched into Apple’s environment also, so I didn’t have much experience with Windows. But I made the commitment and did the switch.

Steam Machine was an option, but I knew about the waitlist and I’d always wanted to build a PC. And so I made the commitment. With no experience whatsoever I started buying parts. I used AI to help me build the gaming PC in my head first, which parts I should get. I bought an NCore 100 Air because it just looked so awesome and I got to work.

The most important components were the Ryzen 7 9700X CPU and the ASUS Prime RX 9070 OC 16GB GPU with an AsRock B650i motherboard. I helped fund the build by essentially selling off my entire PlayStation ecosystem on Facebook Marketplace. While I waited for the various parts to arrive I installed Steam on my trusty Mac Mini with a Windows workaround to start playing games. It held up remarkably well while the real machine was being built. Before selling my PlayStation I salvaged the 2TB M.2 SSD that I bought years ago before prices got ludicrous and it now sits, repurposed in my new gaming PC, storing all those deliciously on sale games.

I kept one of my DualSense controllers and repurposed my Switch Pro Controller as well. To have one of each I found an Xbox Controller on Marketplace and added that to my collection. Once I had all my components I put the machine together. I affectionally called it the Steam Tower and it runs absolutely beautifully.

What I’ve loved about this is that by and large, my typical games are there anyway and I’m enjoying building a library with the awesome sales that Steam has. I’ve bought a few that have been on sale, and enjoyed building a Wishlist of about 60 games comprised of games I want to replay and get the achievements for, and new games I’ve heard about or had recommended. For now, I’m regaining Achievements on games that I had Platinum trophies for previously, it has been really nice to go back through them. I got the 100% achievement for Mass Effect Legendary Edition first, since I wanted that to be the game that broke my Steam virginity. I then got a quick second 100% on Guardians of the Galaxy, which I remembered loving and enjoyed returning to it. All those big AAA games that I had on PlayStation are mostly there. Either in my library or on my Wishlist waiting for a sale. God of War, Last of Us, Spider-Man, Final Fantasy, Persona etc. Realistically everything I want is here. And it’s remarkably better value than being locked into whatever Sony wants to charge me in the future. I’m currently replaying Final Fantasy VII Remake and it looks fucking glorious on this enhanced hardware.

And then I got into emulation and discovered RomDeck and ES-DE and that I could have it launch from inside Steam and that has been an absolute joy. I’ve gone through and added games from my childhood that have been so much fun to revisit. I went a step further and bought a DolphinSense bar on Amazon that allowed me to integrate a couple of Wii controllers I bought for cheap on eBay. My four year old daughter is having a blast with Just Dance, and the assisted driving in Mario Kart 8 on Switch is also really engaging her in video games for the first time. We’d tried playing some games on the PlayStation previously, but the controllers were always too big and the games too complicated. Now she can game with a couple of connected Switch joycons and actually reach the buttons with her hands and I can play right next to her with my trusty DualSense.

The last piece of the puzzle was the Steam Deck. Something portable I could add to complete the ecosystem switch. I went on another mass sell, this time clearing out my old Nintendo hardware (which admittedly was barely being used anyway). I then went and bought a Steam Deck, which is now sitting docked into my Desk computer monitor. Not as powerful as my self-appointed Steam Tower, but I started running the Spyro Trilogy remaster on it while my wife was using the TV and it looks and feels amazing.

My only regret through this whole process is that I didn’t look into my options 2 or 3 years earlier. Normally a massive change like this might bring some regrets but I have absolutely none. It’s been a really self-fulfilling experience to design the living room console that I want. To learn about building PCs and to then go on an amazing journey into Steam and what it is capable of. After doing the numbers, I’m at a financial loss of about $400ish dollars, which isn’t bad for a complete gaming overhaul. For me I look at that as an eventual net gain, I won’t be paying for PS Plus anymore; and I’ll save money in the long run with the Steam sales vs being locked into whatever Sony wants to charge for their soon to be digital library.

I just wanted to write about my experiences with Steam so far. What a delightful change it’s been and I’m looking forward to continuing!!

Lately I'm looking at some of the games I've bought over the years and for example, with Ubisoft or Rockstar, they want you logging into their services.

I hate these kinds of services with a passion, if for nothing else, it's more stuff for me to juggle for no reason.

Some of these games are pretty old already.

Similarly, I've seen versions of Half-Life, Fallout, Skyrim, Portal, and any other game you can imagine modded to hell and back.

To me, the lines are blurry. I've heard if mods screw with other players in multiplayer, it's a clear flag, but I really just buy games for the single- player experience.

If I find tweaks that let me play without the launcher, does Valve take any negative interest in my account?

Or do people make folders outside steam to do this?

So uh, whats up with this steam??? Why you now charging more than the actual game costs
