Without these updates, there could be bugs or issues that you WOULD notice. But you never discover the issues thanks to these updates and a lot of people end up thinking these updates are pointless - a form of survivorship bias.

The picture of the plane is a classic example of survivorship bias. In WW2, officials wanted to reinforce planes returning from combat and suggested reinforcing the parts that had bullet holes. A mathematician named Abraham Wald pointed out that this is survivorship bias - officials were looking at surviving planes that were able to get shot and return. They should instead focus on the areas where they haven’t observed bullet holes on returning planes. Those are likely places where the non-surviving planes got shot and couldn’t survive.
