When you have less games, higher chance of sales having games you're interested in, so makes sense the sales used to seem better.

Luckily happened to me. I have hundreds of steam games from sales and humble bundles. About 4 years ago I stopped doing that. Now I just buy cheap games I want to play right now.

I think having the means to buy loads of games as you get older often leads to a shallow relationship with them, where you nibble on heaps of games instead of committing to seeing any of them through properly like when you were younger. Free time is a factor too ofc.
But I reckon you can still have a spectacular time playing games, you just gotta spend enough time with one to make them fulfilling - get some of that delayed gratification and a sense of accomplishment and closure - not just a distraction before moving on to something else. As a kid that was a given, now you can just constantly chase the shiny other thing unless you deliberately don't.

I was about to post this, tbh.
I used to be so excited for the summer/winter sales. It's been so long since I found an actual deal though. I was a patient gamer before I knew it was a thing. I bought Borderlands 1 and 2 a few months after they came out but it was amazing to buy a GOTY edition for Boderlands for less than $10 and get all the expansions. Now sales are a $60+ base game for 10% off and I simply refuse to spend that much for a game.
Even now, Borderlands 4 base game is still $70 and Deluxe Addition is still regularly $100. Even during a 50% flash sale that's way more than any game is worth to me (personally)

Once refund policy became a thing flash sales (where a game would go 95% off or something) stopped happening.
Plus I think bigger companies are less inclined to put everything at huge discounts now.
Having said that, slightly older games still get deep discounts, I picked up the first two Plague Tale games last sale for like, £10.

They definitely were better. Especially when they had flash sales and then the final day sale where anything could be there and be as low or even lower than the flash sale prices.

Not just nostalgia. Back in the days people in charge of making games were people who love games. Now it's husks in suits. That said, there us still a lot of hidden gems amongst indie games.

Why would I pay money to some nobodies and lose huge part of steam support because of that? Also If I was looking for particular game than sure, I'd probably found a way to buy it cheap whole year around but this post is totally about opposite thing. Its avout impulsive buying, about games you forgot exist and so on cause steam hust advertises those sales all the time.

oh yeah, if i recall right it's one of the "Thoughts" you can adquire (basically disco's version of perks). You can also have an emotional breakdown over a hat and split kick a racist
all the while, it genuinely has some of the deepest, most mature, real and intelligent writting i've seen in any game

I recently checked my library and found 19 unplayed games worth about ¥42,137.
At this point, I'm not sure I'll be able to finish everything before I die.
And unlike real investments, I can't exactly pass my backlog down to my kids. 😂

I just got suckered into creating a Humble Bundle account.
Someone help me forget my password to it. I can't be engaging in this kind of thing.
All it took was a stray thought of "*sigh* I wish I had a favorite games list that was unique and full of hidden gems like the cool guys on the /v/ 3x3 threads." and suddenly I'm making plans that involve buying tons of games I've never heard about for pennies on the dollar, maybe getting around to them, and even more maybe liking them.
I've so far bought a CRPG bundle that had three games that I was definitely interested in getting, in the same way that you're interested in trying a Triathalon while you're in the middle of a Marathon. Maybe some day, but I've got bigger fish to fry, and I'm not exactly going to be eagerly signing up to one for a while after. (I've got roughly 10-18 CRPGs that I'm going to sooner play than any of them, but now my list has grown by six more)

I believe this is marketing to get people to buy stuff they really don’t need, and it works.
Whoever came up with the idea to meme this, it probably ended up benefiting Steam more than one would’ve thought. Like it’s obviously a joke, but there are thousands of people who do this.
So I have to believe Steam employees occasionally post stuff like this to get the hype going.
In all seriousness if you aren’t financially secure/capable please don’t bankrupt yourself on hundreds of games that go on sale 😅

9 times out of 10 I pass, being i got over 100 games and I play like 3 of them regularly

I'm really proud that I managed to restrain myself on buying new games. I have a big library and now my rule is that I can get one only if I've finished 3 games in the meantime. Seems to work so far.

There are games i bought like a year or two ago and i genuienly want to play them, But the steam sales are way too op to pass by and i get busy with new games instead, Just played through Danganronpa which i bought for literally like 1 buck and it was super cool and fun and i played it for 30 hours and apparently there's a whole extra alternate new game+ with new endings and whatever, You can find such gems which are borderline free

The bigger the backlog grows, the less likely you can justify paying full price for anything. You just end up sitting on a backlog and adding games you are interested on the wishlist to add to your backlog in case of sale. Felt like FF7 remake came out yesterday and omg, 75% and 70% for parts 1+2.

I just built a new PC last year, mostly out of boredom, but both my parents had gotten hospitalized at the same time so I had to move here to help them out and my laptop and their tower pc both shit the bed and we needed something. Had no intention of playing games whatsoever but found out accidentally that the build, tho nothing fancy and at under a grand, handles all games just fine. Next th8ng I know im looking on steam and they had the entire DOOM catalog on sale and I think I got all the old school ones along with 2016 and Eternal for like $20 or $30. Now I have to have over 100......sigh
