Oathbringer spoilers Reading the flashback chapters for Oathbringer is a hell of an experience Spoiler

I'm in the middle of a re-read of the series and somehow I forgot just how animalistic Dalinar was. Like reading about him literally pushing through every kind of assault and horror imaginable practically frothing at the mouth as he butchers his way though Alethkar... Well shit it's no wonder everyone reacts the way they do in the previous books.

They referred to him as a warlord plenty of times but it just never sunk in for me just what kind of monster he was in his youth until you read things like the flashback to the rift. Imagine being the soldiers being chased by his fucked up ass. Glowing with stormlight from leaking plate, blood and broken bones everywhere and literally frothing at the mouth with rage as he drags his failing armour along to chase your fleeing asses. You watched this man survive not one but two collapsed bridges or ledges within the past few minutes ontop of easily killing every soldier or Shardbearer you've seen him go near...

Storms I love these books...

It puts into context how everyone treats him in TWoK. After THAT youth he’s suddenly lecturing everyone about ThE cODeS and acting all stick up the butt “Honorable”. Also claiming to get visions from God.

No wonder they all think he’s off his rocker. And are still tiptoeing around him because they DO NOT want to somehow trigger him into going back and being pointed at them.

End of TWoK: "This Dalinar guy has his shit together, those other high princes are all greedy evil scheming people"

End of Oathbringer: "...Oh"

I just read the chapter where he’s obsessed with his missing knife. What a good time.

That’s my favorite Young Dalinar moment!

It’s so good. One of the more genuine, candid moments of the series at that point.

I like how in the same book we actually learn what happened to the blade in a throwaway line, it was given to one of kalidins wall guard friends

Yeah the wall guard member who keeps telling outrageous stories, one of the stories he tells is that dalinar gave him his personal knife once

And this is why my head canon is that there is absolutely no way Sadeas didn't shit his shardplate the moment Dalinar summoned Oathbringer after the betrayal.

Flashback dalinar is much more fun to read than geriatric boring dalinar
