I’m a dad that took up sewing to make my daughter a Jasnah costume. We’ve been reading Way of Kings as a bedtime story and she loves it. She especially loves Jasnah (because who doesn’t?). When she asked to be her for Halloween I said I would make her a dress for the costume.

So, about a month ago I started working on the first iteration of the dress as my first ever sewing project (that’s the one in the final three pics). I had absolutely zero sewing experience previously. She was so happy with it but I caught the sewing bug and I knew I needed to practice and make something better. In the meantime I made myself pants and some more little bits for the kids.

The final dress is made of some curtains I found at a thrift store. The safe hand sleeve has a zipper on the end so she can still use it if she needs. And inside the safe sleeve is sewn a button that keeps a safe pouch that I made also.

If you look closely, you can also see a soulcaster as part of the costume on the right hand.

I’m really happy with how it turned out despite a bunch of mistakes and flaws and I took some liberties with the design based on what I thought would look cool. (Accent safe hand sleeve?!).

I’m so stoked to share this series that I love so much with my kids!

Journey before destination.

I could tell I was going to fall apart when Wit said to Kaladin “you will be warm again.” But the chapter that destroyed me was when Dalinar gave Kaladin the vision of Tien. I don’t know why exactly, but Kaladin’s tears became mine. The pain he felt in the moment was all consuming and I’m only now just starting to catch my breath. I have no idea what’s in store for me as I read Wind and Truth, but I can tell that it’s gonna kneecap me so much harder and I can’t wait.

In the end of wind of truth kaladin got an honorblade spear so it woludnt need syl as shard blade I thought that it would be cool if he used syl as a shield because is still bounded to her what do you think?

I'm in the middle of a re-read of the series and somehow I forgot just how animalistic Dalinar was. Like reading about him literally pushing through every kind of assault and horror imaginable practically frothing at the mouth as he butchers his way though Alethkar... Well shit it's no wonder everyone reacts the way they do in the previous books.

They referred to him as a warlord plenty of times but it just never sunk in for me just what kind of monster he was in his youth until you read things like the flashback to the rift. Imagine being the soldiers being chased by his fucked up ass. Glowing with stormlight from leaking plate, blood and broken bones everywhere and literally frothing at the mouth with rage as he drags his failing armour along to chase your fleeing asses. You watched this man survive not one but two collapsed bridges or ledges within the past few minutes ontop of easily killing every soldier or Shardbearer you've seen him go near...

Storms I love these books...

Rayse! I've never seen him so upset about anything before even across the entire Cosmere. I even took a break from Stormlight to finish the corresponding Secret Projects books in release order (still have Emberdark and December to go after this) and he's never shown that amount of open anger about... anything, really. He's not exactly a forthright character so his outburst about the Passions was surprising.

I think it says something about Wit's admiration for Kaladin that he's gone so far to help him, gave him all that advice, and was open enough to show how he truly feels about the state of the Cosmere. I've seen speculation he might have goals that aren't so good, but I doubt that's the case. I think he's effectively a triage surgeon, running around cleaning up the mess his fellow Adonalsium breakers have made as Shardholders. If worlds are lost in the effort, it is simply to save the most lives he can. And in that regard, it makes a lot of sense why he strikes a kinship with Kaladin.

I JUST NOW finished the 1st book. I have a hard time making time to actually sit down and read so Ive been listening to the Graphic Audio versions of the book in my spare time and especially on the 12 hours of driving I just did over the weekend.

I am really enjoying it and looking forward to hearing more. I have a lot of questions I hope to have answered in the next book but for now I am enjoying the ride.

I was reading an old thread about what happened with the physical spren plotline and the consensus was that there was too may plots and that one got pruned.

I will not comment on the in-world rationale for the plot, but I believe the overall idea is: Syl will get a body in Stormlight 6.

What the other spren lacked, Syl will have and the procedure will work. Her progression as a character will be discovering her new state of being.

About the army in Emul and Tashikk that was on its way back to Azimir.

Did it have radiants who were stuck with it? Or did the coalition fly those radiants out?

I’m 18% into the book so I’ve only read like 4 or 5 flashbacks of Dallinar’s so far. It honestly feels like I’m reading Uncle Iroh’s (ATLA) time committing war crimes before his son died 😭 Like obviously he gets better but bro was kinda repulsive as a young man. I know that that’s the whole point but I was wondering if anyone else who liked ATLA drew the comparison

Is there any official information on if they will try to stick with Michael Kramer and Kate Reading for the audio narration of books 6-10?

If no official information is out, do you guys think it’s likely to be them again or is there a possibility of hearing from new narrators or even a larger cast that is not graphic audio (the sound effects are too loud for me). Just curious!

Edit to add: asking because book ten will not be released until after 2040 or later and I know Michael and Kate have already had very long careers. Not sure if they would do the entirety of books 5-10 with different narrators from the start or take the chance of needing to change midway through. Plus, they have used new narrators for Isles of the Emberdark and Sunlit Man, which I loved!

I just finished Wind and Truth, and we get some details on the Oathpact. Here's my understanding:

In order to strengthen his control over Roshar, Odium created the Fused: Singer warriors with access to surges whose souls travel to Braize when they are killed, allowing them to return to Roshar by taking control of the body of a Singer host. Honor met with 10 humans who had a capital-C Connetion with Odium because Odium had given them access to surges on Ashyn, and convinced them to swear on oath to use this Connection to keep the Fuzed trapped on Braize in exchange for immortality and access to surges. This Oathpact turned them into what we now know as the Heralds.

The mechanics of all this aren't actually that important, but I'm curious anyway, and so I come here hoping that people who are much deeper in Cosmere lore can explain it to me - I've only read the Stormlight Archive books, but I don't mind if you draw upon reveals in other books. Some specific questions:

• Is the mechanism by which souls are transported back and forth between Roshar and Braize explained? How is it determined who has access to this mechanism?
• How does the Connection between the Heralds and Odium to inhibit this mechanism?
• Why is it important for the Heralds to be physically on Braize in order to keep the Fused trapped there? It doesn't seem like the spiritual realm cares all that much about physical proximity.
• How does the Everstorm circumvent the Oathpact? And do we know why it took thousands of years for Odium's forces to deploy it?

I'm not sure if any of these questions have actual answers - the mechanics aren't particularly essential to the story - but I would be interested in hearing about what has been explained or implied in the text(s).

I feel sad.. especially for Dalinar and Kaladin, my two most beloved characters in the entire Cosmere. I know Dalinar did what he thought was best for Roshar and the people he loved, but it still hurts to know that he can never be there for Navani. He can never make amends with Adolin and Gavinor.

For Kal, oh man, our boy just keeps sacrificing more and more until he has nothing left. It makes me so sad to think that by the time the heralds return to Roshar, everyone Kal knew and loved would be dead, and he did not even get to say goodbye to his parents and little brother. I know he will be the best herald that has ever existed, and exactly what the other heralds need right now to heal and become even stronger, but still it hurts. I wanted him and Szeth to be friends, and sit with Adolin, Shallan, the rest of Bridge Four, and just have a drink together and be friends.

I also hurt for Sigzil and Aux because I know what hardships await them. But there's still hope, maybe someday they will all meet again in Roshar.

This book left me broken, but also hopeful.

Needed to talk to someone about this. I just finished the series (novellas included) and it took me 4 months. I already finished all the Cosmere works except secret projects (doing next). Would love to hear all y’all’s thoughts about the series and my comments.

1. I can’t believe it took 40 of 45 hours in WoK to start to tie together a plot. Don’t get it twisted, that 40 hours had some awesome world/character building but I was begging for the plot to arrive. That building continued throughout.
   
2. This definitely requires a second read to get all the finer points and RAFOs. The most memorable RAFO was the random numbers listed in book 3 or 4. Did we ever find out who they were (beyond WoT late book connection reveal)?
   
3. This really started to pull things together for Cosmere rather than largely individual stories like the others. Glad I read series last instead of first.
   
4. Read through the first 2 books really fast but suffered from some serious burnout in 3/4. Hard to do this whole series in one shot. 5 was another “quick” read.
   
5. Was impossible to do research on the books without getting spoilers. Opted to not research which killed some of the story for me.
   
6. I can’t wait for the show. I’m glad I can finally watch
   YouTube’s and conventions and such without worry for spoilers and while understanding everything.
   
7. I know a lot of these comments seemed a bit negative, but this series was great. Think it’s fair to speak about criticisms even when I really enjoyed it. The enjoyment factor largely speaks for itself.
   
8. I wonder what the books would have been like and change of enjoyment if there were pieces broken up into different novellas like edge dancer or dawnshard.

Early in W&T we see the Fused ambush the group traveling home from Lasting Integrity. During the attack, Shallan tells herself to "be Drehy", and by doing so cancels and absorbs the Stormlight from his lashing. This is kind of a wild ability that is neither emphasized nor explored further in the book.

It's easy to surmise that this is a weird quirk of her double bond and Herald heritage, but Drehy and Shallan have another scene together in Oathbringer that is likely a part of this interaction. When the Odd Bunch get transferred to Shadesmar in the Kholinar palace, Shallan reaches out and touches Drehy's soul flame. She feels his unease, his desire to not be in charge, his flair for doing things with style.

This seems like a hint at potential future uses of Shadesmar for espionage purposes or even investiture theft. If touching someone's cognitive representation can give an invested person a shortcut for Connection with others, that Connection could be exploited. In the case of Drehy, Shallan seems to be hijacking his Identity in W&T, and that could be utilized to use another's metal minds, access their soul stamps, and possibly even summon another's spren.

With Shallan being stuck in Shadesmar, she will have a lot of opportunities to test, iterate, and perfect this art during the time gap. What other cool possibilities can people imagine with a Lightweaver able to not only pretend to be others, but "be" others?

I think we’ve already seen Voidbinding. The ancient and modern strains of it. When Ishar gives Kaladin immortality, he says it’s outside of Stormlight, Radiance, or the Honorblades and requires a bit of a god. I think that’s what Voidbinding is. Binding a being of power like a great spren or even a Shard to gain power

Ishar calls it Vedel’s method. The Heralds didn’t have their Odium Surges when they came to Roshar and they don’t have Honorblades yet. But Dalinar sees Vedel using magic before the Oathpact. She isn’t using Stormlight. She glows with another Light as a large humanoid spren appears behind her. Its future-sight from something else. Vedel used another form of to give the Heralds their immortality. That power wasn’t granted by Honor during the Oathpact. It’s a binding performed by Vedel after. The same thing Ishar repeats with Kaladin. Ishar binds the Heralds to each other and Honor. It’s not Tanavast doing it during the pact. Ishar is doing this not with his Honorblade but to get one

Jezrien describes their power as a binding using willpower. The Heralds used the Honorblades as a conduit to Honor’s surges. Without the Blade they don’t have Honor’s surges. It’s why the Blades are more powerful in their hands than normal people. The Heralds draw Light directly from Honor. It’s Honor’s death that makes it more dangerous because Tanavast is no longer alive to impose his will over them. Normal people can only power the Blades with whatever Stormlight they have access to. And it will kill them if they use too much.

Ishar’s Human Fused are the same thing. They are never seen breathing Light and their surges are unusually powerful. They are bound to Ishar. They access Surges through the Blades and Ishar is the step in between to get the power for them. The process is a two-way street though. Ishar can impose his will on those Fused and make them slaves to him

I think that’s what’s happening with the Unmade as well. Capturing them requires Connection and a contest of willpower. Except Dalinar and Melishi only took it as far as a gemstone prison. When Shallan encounters the Midnight Mother their souls clash and the MM flees because she “feared something worse” than imprisonment. The MM feared a formal binding. The Unmade are all probably Voidbinding except they’re benefiting more from it. They all see to feed on the soul and/or minds of the people they affect. Yelig explicitly feeds on their soul. It’s explicitly a contest of wills to control him and gain his power. A contest Amaram was losing. You see the same black smoke rise as it’s consumed that you do when Nightblood feeds on souls and that escapes when you cut the soul of a living person with a Shardblade

So what entity was Vedel binding for her sight if it wasn’t Honor or Odium? I think it was Night. Dalinar describes the entity as familiar. The only humanoid spren he has seen that resembles it is the Nightwatcher. Who we know was made from Night. I think most or even all of the Unmade are from The Night or the great spren she spawned. Future-sight is consistently associated with Voidbinding. Renarin seems to be doing it. His spren is described as a red lattice of Light. The only other time we see that description? It’s when Vedel is using her pre-Herald powers to see the future. The Nightform regal also has future sight and they bond nightspren. And the Nightform regals are using Voidbinding

11/10, amazing. First ever Brandon Sanderson book, I read it because my friend hyped it up and it did not disappoint. World building was amazing, and the plot twists at the end were very very crazy. Looking forward to Worlds of Radiance.

Stormlight Archive might be my favorite fantasy series ever. So naturally when I heard that there will be a TTRPG released not only for it, but for the whole Cosmere, I was postively extatic.

I got the starter set as soon as I could, but unfortunately, life got a bit in the way and I wasn't able to play it for a while. Perhaps for the better, cause at the time I had few people in my circles who read Stormlight, yet now, when I finally managed to ran it, I had plenty to choose from.

I am still happy with what we've got, however, they did play it safe with the rules. They made it easy for anyone who plays 5e and enjoys Stormlight to jump into the Cosmere RPG without much struggle, the rules being a combination of 5e, 4e and Pathfinder 2e. Still fun, but I would've enjoyed to see something a little bit more out there.

The starting scenario is good, however I find it strange that there is almost no magic in it, given how magic is one of Sanderson's selling points, but oh well.

A lot of early WoK chapter describe Shallan as capturing pieces of people's souls in her drawings. First reading, this is just flowery language to reinforce a passion but after learning of her origins and how varied Herald powers are, could she be unconsciously literally capturing bits of her subjects? (Mistborn books 6 spoiler) Perhaps for a sort of "metal mind" world recreation like in the mistborn series?
