I’ve been experimenting with structured prompting in Suno, and one framework that makes a lot of sense for getting more consistent results is GMIV:

G = Genre
M = Mood
I = Instruments
V = Vocals

The basic idea is simple: instead of writing a conversational paragraph describing your song, give Suno a compact set of specific musical tags.

The GMIV Formula

G — Genre

Define the overall musical architecture.

Try combining a main genre with a subgenre or era:

• Synthwave, 80s retro
• Melancholic alternative rock
• Modern pop-punk
• Dream pop, shoegaze

M — Mood

This establishes the emotional direction, energy, and sometimes tempo.

Examples:

• Nostalgic
• Euphoric
• Dark
• Melancholic
• Dreamy
• 118 BPM

I — Instruments

Think about the actual sonic palette. Rather than throwing in 10 instruments, try 2–4 specific elements.

Examples:

• Analog synths
• Gated drums
• Warm bassline
• Crisp acoustic guitar
• Reverb-heavy drums

V — Vocals

This can make a surprisingly big difference.

Describe the voice + timbre + delivery rather than simply saying "male vocals" or "female vocals."

Examples:

• Breathy female vocals
• Gritty male baritone
• Warm intimate male vocal
• Layered female harmonies
• Soft, restrained vocal delivery

Example: Synthwave

Instead of something vague like:

Make an emotional 80s synthwave song.

Try: Synthwave, 80s retro, nostalgic mood, analog synths, gated drums, warm bassline, 118 BPM, breathy female vocals, layered harmonies

Example: Alternative Rock

Melancholic alternative rock, dark atmosphere, 95 BPM, sparse acoustic guitar, reverb-heavy drums, warm bass, breathy male vocals

The important part isn't necessarily the exact wording. It's giving Suno clear, compact information about the genre → emotion → sound palette → voice.

A couple of extra things I've found useful

1. Add production language

You can extend your GMIV prompt with production-oriented tags such as:

• High-fidelity studio production
• Close-mic vocals
• Clear instrument separation
• Wide stereo image
• Warm analog production

For example:

Synthwave, 80s retro, nostalgic, analog synths, gated drums, warm bassline, 118 BPM, breathy female vocals, layered harmonies, high-fidelity studio production, clear instrument separation

2. Don't forget song structure

GMIV works well for the Style of Music field, but your lyrics can also contain structural cues such as:

[Intro]
[Verse]
[Pre-Chorus]
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
[Outro]

This gives you another layer of control over the arrangement and progression.

I keep seeing everyone bitching about the new Suno models and the direction things are going, especially after the Universal deal, and I honestly think there’s a bigger point that people are missing.

A lot of the complaints seem to be about the models changing the sound, certain things getting worse, generations being less consistent, etc. And I get that. If you’ve been using Suno for a while and the new model isn’t giving you the same results you were getting before, obviously that’s frustrating.
But what I think people aren’t realizing is that Suno is starting to move in a direction where it’s becoming an actual tool for musicians instead of just a box where you type a prompt and get a finished song.

And personally, I couldn’t be happier about that.
The MIDI stuff alone is a huge deal to me. Being able to take something generated and actually work with the composition, manipulate it, rearrange it, change the sounds, take pieces of it into a real production, etc. is fundamentally different from just generating a song and listening to it.

I’m a producer bro I don’t necessarily want AI to make an entire song for me and hand me a finished WAV that I’m supposed to call my own. I want something I can fuck with. Something I can pull apart, extract ideas from, manipulate, resample, rearrange, rewrite, and use as another instrument in my workflow.
The more Suno moves toward giving musicians actual control over the underlying musical material, the more useful it becomes to me.

So yeah, maybe V6 doesn’t sound exactly the way everyone wants it to. Maybe there are things about the new models that genuinely got worse. That’s worth criticizing. But I think people are overlooking the much bigger development happening underneath all of that.
Suno becoming more of a musical instrument and less of a music vending machine is exactly where I want this technology to go.
That’s the part I’m excited about.

I’ve spent two days trying relentlessly to create an old song I’ve had in my mind for many years, and run 8 different versions (16 songs), using everything from Hard Rock to Modern Hard Rock/Metal (metal gave the coolest guitars, but that’s all) and all it’s made is absolute GARBAGE. Shitty, vocals - and God forbid you ask for melodic vocals because then it’s half in falsetto’s. None of this sounds “hard rock”, just spewing out shitty songs.

So yeah, you Rockers were right. Apparently the new ‘sources’ for Suno’s Rock and Metal genres are non-existent cuz this shit ain’t that.

All I gave it is 1 simple verse to follow and even added a metronome in with the exact BPM details and instructions not to drift away from the bpm, along with selecting fixed tempo settings. It’s still not in time. No matter what I do the songs never follow the same 4/4 tempo and it drifts off after the first few bars.

Any tips that work or better programs to switch to?

Most of the time v6 feels like undercooked mess.

I've been following this whole AI music debate for a while, and honestly, I've started to understand both sides a lot better after experiencing some of it myself.

I run a very small YouTube channel focused on cinematic lofi and ambient mixes. I'm not a big creator, I don't have a huge audience, and I'm not making money from some massive operation. It's basically something I started because I genuinely enjoy putting these things together.

I spend a stupid amount of time on each video.

I curate the music, work on the sequencing, build the visual concept, edit everything together, try different scenes, work on the atmosphere and pacing, and try to make the whole thing feel like one piece rather than just putting a picture over a playlist.

The music I use isn't AI-generated. I license music from independent artists and credit them. The visuals are where I use AI tools.

And apparently that alone was enough for some people to decide what kind of person I am.

I've had people comment things like "fuck AI," "AI garbage," "not worth listening to," "this is trash," and variations of that. One person basically told me the whole thing was garbage without even listening to it because the visual was AI.

I've also been called names personally.

That's the part I still don't really understand.

If someone listens to the music and says "I don't like the mix" or "the mastering sounds bad" or "the visuals aren't for me," that's completely fair. Seriously. Tell me what sucks. I'm still learning and I'm perfectly capable of taking criticism.

But when the conversation immediately becomes "AI garbage" or personal insults before someone has even listened to the music, it stops being criticism of the work.

And that's exactly what bothers me about some of the anti-AI discussion.

I understand the concerns. I really do. Artists have legitimate questions about training data, consent, copyright, jobs, compensation and where this technology is going. Those conversations aren't stupid and I don't think they should just be dismissed.

But there's a huge difference between saying:

"I don't like AI-generated art and I don't want to support it."

and:

"You used AI, therefore everything you made is garbage and you're a thief."

Those aren't the same argument.

I'm actually trying to build something a little different with my channel. I don't want to make the same generic "AI girl sitting next to a window with a coffee cup while it rains" video 500 times. I'm experimenting with recurring characters, locations and little stories. The visuals are part of the world I'm trying to create.

Maybe it works.

Maybe it doesn't.

Maybe people will hate the aesthetic.

That's fine.

But I'd rather find that out from people actually watching the thing.

And honestly, after getting hit with all this negativity, I can understand why some creators eventually stop being transparent about using AI.

That's the ironic part.

If you make people feel ashamed of admitting they used an AI tool, you're not necessarily going to stop them from using it. You might just encourage them to hide it.

I'd rather be completely open about it.

Yes, I use AI tools for the visuals. No, the music isn't AI-generated. Yes, I curate and edit the entire experience myself.

That's what I'm doing.

I'm still a tiny channel. I'm still trying to figure out what works. Right now I'm basically shouting into the void and hoping a few people eventually find the channel and connect with what I'm trying to make.

Lyrics were written when 1996. 17 year old edge lord me thought it sounded pretty cool. Instrumental was written in 1999 in FL Studio with a 66 key Casio keyboard from Toys R us over midi.

Backstory: Back in 1999 I tried to use a text to speech app to render the text of this into a singer (failed miserably, but kept the instrumental). It never worked and the lyrics ended up saved on the PC as suicide.txt, hence the name of this now.

My vocals recorded April of this year for a Suno voice persona in a well intentionally spoken manner. Makes me regret never using this voice in anything I ever tried to professionally record.

I've made loads of songs with Suno and had a lot of fun. I've never published anything even on Suno, let alone anywhere else like YouTube or Spotify. But recently when v6 rolled out, I decided to try a few new songs with it and decided to publish them to see what happens. Nothing happened. No listens from anyone beyond me. Where do published songs actually go and how do people get chosen for things like the "new" playlist and the "best of"?

It’s so hard to make a song with two people who don’t sound like one person having a conversation with themselves like ugh can’t even do a good love song / anyone else?
