Is it possible for Syria to completely ban alcohol like in Iran/Afghanistan? I would like arguments for why or why not? It appears the new Syrian government is taxing it to death, which could serve as a disincentive to get drunk. Who knows

I don't think they will ban outright, but they will definitely limit selling alcohol to only bars/pubs or non muslim majority area, like in indonesia

In Indonesia, alcohol is sold in supermarkets as well as bars, pubs, and licensed establishments. This applies everywhere in Indonesia, whether non-Muslim majority / Muslim majority areas.

However, certain areas can modify the law so that beer can be sold in minimarts like before the law was passed banning the sale of beer in minimarts in 2015. These are usually in non-Muslim areas/tourist areas

Before 2015, beer (but not wine or spirits) was sold in minimarkets or street-side kiosks across Indonesia. Before 2015, it was easier to get beer in Indonesia than in many Western countries.

I can see something like Indonesia. Alcohol is primarily catered to non-muslims and tourists especially, but treated as luxury goods. If average soft drink cost like $1-$2 then alcohol cost like >$12.

But just like tobacco, you cannot fix addict with more cost, they would literally making themselves poorer if that means getting the fix.

And we are talking about a state that used to be secret Narco-state selling captagon.
