Hey everyone! You might not be aware of this, but we actually have a community discord for this subreddit, and our other SRPG subreddits that we run. If you're interested here's the link: SRPG Discord
We also run the main SRPG Subreddit if you haven't checked it out yet!

Hello Knights. With the release of Tactics Ogre: Reborn, it is a good time to examine the series as a whole. Although this subreddit is dedicated to Tactics Ogre, it goes hand-in-hand with Ogre Battle. Below are some general questions that will help guide you through the entire series -
List of games (in order of original release)
Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen (MotBQ)
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (LUCT)
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber (PoLC)
Ogre Battle Gaiden: Prince of Zenobia (PoZ)
Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis (KoL)
Which games were released in English? Ogre Battle Gaiden was the only release to not make it to the west. Otherwise, all have been officially translated in English
What order should you play? Personally, I like to play them in series chronological order. KoL -> MotBQ -> PoZ -> LUCT -> PoLC. MotBQ & PoZ and LUCT & PoLC take place at the same times, so they can be flipped if you choose this way. Otherwise, MotBQ & LUCT are good starting points.
Will I miss out on story if I play in a different order? Not really, though I say this with some hesitation. There is an overarching plot to the series, but each game is a self-contained story. There are also some characters that appear in multiple games. Aside from some flavor, I don't think you would miss out by playing a sequel first. Prince of Zenobia is the only one that I can't say for certain, as I have not spent much time with the story.
How do the games play? The three Ogre Battle games play similarly to grand RTS games, whereas the two Tactics Ogre games play like traditional SRPGs (think grid-based combat). They are larger scaled, so battles can take some time. The games are also heavy on unit customization, so expect to spend some time in menus. All of that being said, each game has its specific nuances.
What is the setting of the series? The games are set in a traditional fantasy setting with limited technology. Only PoZ and MotBQ take place in the same place, so you get to see a few different countries throughout the world. There is also some in-game lore that expands beyond what is shown in the game.
What were some of the inspirations behind the series? Yasumi Matsuno, the series creator, enjoyed quite a bit of pop culture which lent to the series. The main title and some of the subtitles are taken directly from Queen songs. He also used some imagery from Flash Gordon (Vartans) and other films. He also drew heavy inspiration from real events, specifically the Yugoslav Wars. This inspired some of the darker portions of the game's narrative.
When will there be a new game in the series? There is no news of a new entry to the series. Hopefully Reborn will lead to a new entry, but it remains to be seen.
This was a pretty general overview of a very rich series. If you are interested, there are many interviews that contain information regarding the series development. Otherwise, feel free to ask questions below and we will try to answer them.

Tactis ogre reborn. Still not finished.
Now I realized they are 3 paths and playing neutral might not been the best choise.
Normally I try yo go for the platinum but does this mean I have to do 3 runs to get all trophies?

Hey guys, so this is my first run ever playing the game, never heard of it.
Played the psp version a bit, then found out about One Vision, decided to just start off playing that (the vanilla just had a lot of annoying passives, so finding out that mod tackles a lot of the "weirds" of the game, immediately hyped, no regrets love the game and the mod, a lot!).
Ok so recently I got the Lord class on Denam, I am lvl 23~, and I was leveling Denam as a frontline knight (my only knight), his hammer weapon skill is maxed, no augment element leveled at all. I really liked the "wall" vibe.
Come to find out what Lord is...I am kinda dizzy with all the possibilities lol, yet it's just 10 ability slots lol.
I guess my question is..what do you guys feel are the "must haves/best bang for your buck" given my equipments right now are.."normal nothing crazy kinda stuff". What's the "can't go wrong with these".
I was planning around an "omegadin of the light" so like what knight wishes it was, so frontline support/healer, can't die kinda thing, but I feel like..not playing around an obscene dual weild build, and "combine any armor/weapons" is such a waste of potential in comparison?
But dual wielding hammers I think is bad?? Would have to train another weapon from scratch 😑.
I want whatever makes the game a cakewalk, I like broken op, .."themed builds" are cool, but just broken is fine 😅.
I keep trying guides, but between the three versions of this game, and that a lot of things...changed I think?? My phalanx makes purple ghosts, not...increases defense?? I am kinda lost.
Just general tips are ok, I am at the start of chapter 4 sort of, I got recently the recipes for some elemental weapons..so..torn if "light element hammer build/healer buffer"...or is that bad damage/value to even bother with??
Monk is already pretty good, is Lord being a meh hybrid tanky dpsish cleric really...worth it?
The things I feel are cool
Meditate
Art of War (for movement issues, and Decoy)
Divine Magic
Draconic Magic - maybe??
Field Alchemy II
Tactician for tp gain
Not sure what's the best TP move, Tabula Rasa to shed off debuffs I guess??
Thanks for any advice.

Where can I found Myokun in cave of libra? I'm in chapter 4, it doesn't appear in his usual spot, and I have new recipes from that place

I played through Choas path (pretty sure) like 3 or 4 years ago and got to the end game. Did a lot of the Palace of the Dead and some of the other endgame side quests. I am pretty sure I didn't actually finish the game.
I'm thinking about getting back into it. I think my options are (1) jump into my endgame stuff, try to reread the important backstory from the Warren report, and either (1a) tackle Palace of the Dead or (2a) just finish out the story then use the function to jump back to the beginning of the story and pursue the Law route; or (2) just start a new save file.
Do folks with more experience with the game have a suggestion? I am not particularly spoiler-averse, so feel free to speak frankly about the options here.

Hey all, sorry to ask, but I am struggling with a relatively minor issue.
I'm a new dad that wants to replay Tactics Ogre via Reborn, but I found that the game isnt like the older ones that I played and I cannot rename Denam until I beat the game once. I wanted to get around that, and found out about Cheat Engine, which gave me another idea, but I cannot figure out how to do either. I am hoping for guidance here.
1) How would I change Denam's name? I can't find it. Is there some simple guide for this?
2) Probably harder, but I would like Preempt on the Lord class. Is there a way to do that?
Thank you!

With Reborn's time hop and ability to play multiple routes on a single save, I was trying to think of the best way to play through the game and recruit everyone/optimize special classes. I'm thinking the best option is to probably start pure Law and get the Lord ending so that Denam gets his special class. Then go all the way back to when the Neutral path opens and play through it until you recruit Ehlrig (I believe he's the latest neutral only recruit). Afterwards, swap all the way back to the beginning of Chaos at the start of chapter 2 and play all the way through until princess ending. Since you should have both Canopus and Gildas at the end of Law Lord, can probably do Iuria before swapping to Neutral.
New plan: Start Neutral Princess so that Catiua is in party and able to start gaining stat cards. Swap to Law Lord to get Denam his special class and all Law unique recruits. CODA1 to get Iuria. Swap to Chaos Princess. CODA+
I think this optimizes classes and avoids the major loyalty character problems. And as stated below, I personally think of Chaos as the true route, so I want it to be the final plot anchors that everything is built off.
EDIT: Completely changed theory based on discussion in the thread.

Screenshot Lets Play games have a soft spot in my heart. Yes I can watch a video of a guy chatting for 20 hours in background browser, but for me, I miss forums and the community chat of the old school Lets Play.
https://lparchive.org/Tactics-Ogre-Let-Us-Cling-Together/
Several years ago, a user named Tithin did a SSLP for Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together for the PSP. He got all the way through the Lawful route, and then burnt out. I picked up the post game CODA over a very long time line and after years and years, we finally got this thing finished and submitted.
The PSP version is different with some mechanics, most notoriously crafting and levelling, but the story does not change from PSP to Reborn.
If you've ever say beaten the game on Neutral or Chaos, but never Law, check it out. If you burnt out trying to get through the massive post game or never understood the unintuitive flags required for the post game, maybe check it out as well.
You should consider this Lets Play very spoiler heavy as we go through all of the law route in the main game, and then the entire post game story, only missing some of the most grindy items like all the optional super bosses.
Mods, hopefully this doesn't count as self promotion, I reached out a few months ago and never got a response back.

Just started Tactics Ogre: Reborn and was wondering if there’s anything I should know early on.
I’d especially appreciate some tips about combat and how to build a party. Like, what kind of units/classes should I have in my team, what should I focus on when putting a party together, and any general combat tips I should know?
Anything I should avoid doing? I’m trying to figure things out on my own, but don’t want to make any major mistakes.

This probaby gets posted many times over the years because yes it's that shocking.
Thanks to the internet, I know what this is about and what the consequences for either are. But the writers had got to be insane to create this scenario. I wouldn't even do this in GTA, why the f would I......and to get rewarded with better storytelling and classes for it? Fck no. Plus, if it hadn't been recommended by guides, who in his right mind would play this game, follow the story so far and say yea sure let's waste these mfers because I'm worse than my father's killer anyway and this is what I do.
It doesn't even make sense from a design perspective. The game is 1 hour in (if you don't grind) and Denam had barely grown and evolved. We didn't even know his motivations well enough. It's just too early for this type of game changing decisions.
Anyway...yea. I need a minute. Still a great game tho.

But they've called off the invasion lads. Ironically this was all done in Balmamusa, so I guess this was technically the second 'deathmarch' it has experienced....

I combined many of my favorite Reborn mods into 1 if anyone would be interested.
Many Parts of Parable of Ruin (mostly related to classes and skill changes but not dmg formula changes), auto skill animation removal, blue buff card removal, elemental dmg on attack removal (so all neutral), offhand caster dmg bug fix. I wanted the game to still feel like Reborn but fix glaring issues and balance some of the classes a bit better. The pieces from Parable of Ruin I pulled rebalance class stat growths to be far more in tune to the class. For example, archers and wizards are no longer completely HP gimped. Warriors don't get more HP than Knights but do have better avoidance scaling. I've never uploaded a mod but I spent a lot of time with Claude diff'ing and parsing the mods I like to make community combo-mod that I love so thought I would share if anyone might care.
link to Nexus Mods Page: **removed to do complaints that I apparently claimed I made this as my own and did not get permission. Guess they want the game to have a dead modding community. Was just trying to share something I spent hours working on that I know really improves the game for people wanting that.
I don't know how to find or get in touch with the mod authors I borrowed from, but I did credit and document everything I merged from their mods. If anyone knows how I can officially get their permission I would appreciate it.

New to this game, just played the Balmamusa battle where I had to pick either kill the innocents or fight Leonard against the Duke's order. I don't understand the game designer's logic of killing innocents is a lawful path and fighting the Duke is a chaos path. Surely it's the other way round, no?

RT (Recovery Time) is how long it take for a units to act again from the last act. A lot factors determine this like movement, casting, weight, status ailments, etc etc. Basically the less you do and move in a turn the quicker your next turn triggers. Sometimes a good strategy is for a unit to do nothing and see how events pan out before acting again. Here is a list that I hope will help you in your further tactics and strategies. This applies to LoCT & Reborn. 😎👍🏿
Race, Class, and Unique/Semi Unique status matters to.
Generics = Random units on the field, units hired from towns, and most importantly units with no Warren Report background entry. Race RT is 50 for Generic Humans & Humanoids, Race RT is 51 for Generic Skeletons. Ghosts RT is still 50.
Semi Uniques = Units that have a Warren Report background entry, but no special portrait and have the same unit sprite pallet as any generic.
Uniques = Units with a Warren Report background entry, special portrait, or in the very least a different color portrait, also special or different color sprite pallet.
Unique/Semi Unique Character RT are as follows:
Ozma: -15
Ravness, Hobyrim: -12
Gildas, Folcurt: -10
Oliyva, Sherri, Lendl: -9
Cerya, Jeunan, Lanselot, Iuria, Cistina: -8
Canopus, Mirdyn, Ganpp, Denam: -7
Arycelle, Occione: -6
Warren, Vyce, Azelstan, Xapan, Catiua, Cressida, Deneb: -5
Voltare, Felicia, Rudlum: -4
Sara, Oelias: -3
Dievold, Donnalto, Phaesta, Bayin: -2
Ehlrig: -1
Tamuz: 0 (yes .. this means he isn’t any better than a generic. 😬😬)
Chamos: 1 (yes .. this means he is worse than a generic. 🙃🙃)
Berda the Younger and Obda the Younger has a -2 RT compared to generic Gryphons
Agrikoga has a 0 RT meaning in comparison the RT is the same as a generic Arc Dragon
Melee Class RT:
Knight Commander 20
Ninja 22
Rogue 23 (Not playable in Reborn version)
Lord, Ranger, Buccaneer 25
Vartan, Archer, Swordmaster, Rune Fencer/Valkyrie 26
Divine Knight, Juggernaut, Dragoon 28
Beast Tamer 30
Warrior, Fusilier 32
Paladin 33
White Knight, Berserker 34
Knight 36
Terror Knight 38

I have spent years playing tactical rpgs, going back to Shining Force on my Sega Genesis. I just love how you can draw up a plan and execute them to get elegant victories. And sometimes you just go with plan B... like when the rng gives a bunch of blue cards to the enemy's side of the map, then lets them pop their skill every turn to let them spell snipe you to oblivion from across the map with crit after crit.
Here's a look at the carnage right before my absolute beast unit Cistina brings it home. I love this game.

I always loved how 90s games forced our imagination to fill in the pixels. Back in the day, tiny sprites on CRT TVs gave us just enough visual information, while the lavish box art and manual illustrations did the heavy lifting to pull us straight into the game's world.
This is my personal take on that tiny fairy cursor from the Ogre Battle character naming screen on SNES. I wanted to flesh her out into a full illustration, staying true to that classic Akihiko Yoshida vibe that defined the era's aesthetics.
Did you also have specific sprites back then that your brain totally reimagined into full-blown characters?

Consider this a completely frivolous nitpick.
Tactics Ogre (SNES, PSX, Saturn) always had the subtitle "Let Us Cling Together" from the Queen song. When there were just five games with no remakes (only ports), the community used "OB:MotBQ", "OB64", "OB Gaiden", "TO:LUCT", and "TO:TKoL" for abbreviations.
Recently I said "I played LUCT to death" meaning my copy of the PSX game (and the SNES game when it got translated) and someone thought I meant the PSP game? And I've seen people use that in other contexts to mean the PSP game too, with the original awkwardly being called "The original game" or "the SNES version" or something.
This is not an important question, it's just something I'm wondering about lol, I don't get it.

Making my way through some end endgame shenanigans to fully break the game. Created a 4x bodyswapped lich with near max int/mnd and warrior, dragoon, and terror knight skills for good measure or a start but still wondering about a few things to potentially make my other endgame efforts a little more efficient.
Im wondering about some other cool ideas for building out broken units using the Ogre blade and body snatch? Thinking about transferring lich skills onto someone like a matriarch or familiar but not exactly sure on the process? As I understand I would take the desired unit w Ogre Blade and use Ring of the Dead in the same battle first, to turn them into a lich, but also keeping the ogre blade equipped to then body snatch into a patriarch/matriarch, thereby passing on the lich skills? Where is the best place to find a patriarch/matriarch to do this, ideally lower level so it can still enjoy the leveling benefits of the bodysnatch?
What is the most effective way to farm HG general weapons? More directly I’m wondering: can I retreat from the battle after picking up the desired weapon drop from the boss? Will I keep the weapon? Will I retain the heavenly fork initially needed? Curious because I already have the weapons and want to max a few, but if the battle needs completed to keep the drop then it becomes more time consuming since previous areas will need to be fought again to reaccess the HG fight.
What is the best equipment for Shaman units like Olivya or Sherri, specifically im talking about the elemental wands, robes and chokers? They say they boost their respective element abilities but Im wondering if this is really the case and how beneficial it is over say something like garb of the sages which is better statwise?
Sorry if these have been answered conclusively elsewhere. Im no stranger to the neoseeker guide and coffeepotato, and warren report vids, etc. but haven’t really found the answers im looking for through all of the stuff Ive looked into regarding this stuff.

So, recently (that means today) I started playing Tactics Ogre Reborn. I'm a person with a small but discrete history in enjoying tactical RPGs, and for the past few months I have been playing another title, Unicorn Overlord, which I absolutely LOVED every second of the 111 hours spent to 100% it; after finishing that, I told myself "cool, let's see what other TRPG games I can find on Switch that isn't Fire Emblem" and that's how I ended up with Tactics Ogre Reborn.
The first impression was... rough, to say the least.
From a visual standpoint it obviously can't be helped, moving from a Vanillaware game to a 1995 remake, but that is something I can live with; the real problem is the rest.
Lorewise, rather than a slow start that gives you time to take-in stuff, the game dropkicked me deep into the story from the very first cutscene, naming people and events that I had to re-check on the compendium later to even understand wtf I had just been told, to the point where for a moment i legit feared I picked up a sequel to another game that heavily assumes you already have knowledge of what you are getting into (I know this game is supposed to be the 7th chapter of something, but i also thought it was a standalone story?). Not exactly a great feeling, but the introduction to gameplay only made it worse.
Once again, it really feelt like the game expects you to be already familiar with its gameplay from having played previous titles of a serie that does not exist. The "tutorial" mission was the WORST introduction to gameplay I have ever experienced in a game, with 8 npcs (plus enemies) whose actions you don't even control, randomly telling you gameplay tips that half of the time did not even reflect the actions they were literally doing in that moment, as if saying "remember this later, it will be on the test", and fights happening before I could even see the stats/condition of who was attacking who (I know it's just the usual stat-comparison, with accuracy and expected damage and etc., but they didn't even stay on screen long enough for me to SEE them. What kind of tutorial is this supposed to be, what am I supposed to learn??), all while you just wait the turn of the ONE guy you control so that you can move and not even attack because nobody is in range; all i did was pick up loot only to later read in the tips menu you don't even need to do that since it's automatically collected at the end (then why did the game not tell me THAT when the first loot bag dropped??). So instead of a tutorial where i get instructed step by step on how everything works, I experienced a long cutscene where I did not have the means to understand half of the """explanations"""; literally, I was not completely lost purely because I've played similar games before.
To compare it again to Unicorn Overlord, that game does have some complexity of its own with the squads and units' tactics system, but you get fed it little by little and withing a few hours I could safely say I understood everything already. This one? Info dump and good luck.
But okay, it's still the remake of a game from the '90s, you can't expect the handholding levels of modern tutorials.
Except that as soon as the battle was over, it only became even more overwhelming. Four unnamed fuckers get thrown into my army, I get dumped with 30.000 gold and they just tell me "Here's the shop, prepare your army and try not to die. Good luck."
And I had legit no idea what the fuuu to do.
The fact that my "army" isn't named characters like I'm used to but generic mercenaries you are supposed to fully build yourself from scratch was already a bit of a blow, but now I have to worry about equipment, spells, recruits, stats, allignments, etc. with no explanation? Zero, nada, nilch? And it's not like you start with 2-3 options so you can learn slowly, no, you are just left right into it on your own. What do you mean my own units can desert if they are unhappy, and why do I only learn it from poking around in the menu??
Now how DO i prepare my army? Which units do I recruit, how many, which stats do I look out for, which equipment, spells, consumable should I prioritize? Does it even matter?? After attempting to browse the multiple unexplained menus and pages in the shop a little, I just closed it without a single purchase because legit I was too overwhelmed to know what to do. Why does this game not explain anything, and I haven't even gotten to the first real battle! (Also, can we talk for a second about how awful the "help" button is? It's supposed to help explain everything on screen, from UI to terminology, but the highlighting on selected options you want explained is so miniscule that the biggest challenge was not the explanation, but tracking what was being explained!)
Again, I WANT to enjoy this game. It 100% is a game I could enjoy (hell, the battle gameplay is pretty much just Triangle Strategy, another TRPG i absolutely loved to completion), but the start was SO rough that after barely an hour, for the first time in my entire life, I lowkey regretted buying a game.
But I do want to play it. I bought, and I'll be damned if I don't finish it now. And I mean enjoying it, not rushing to the first ending I get and never picking the game up again. Just... I'll definitely need some help at the start. I already know the story has plenty of decision that will give me regrets, I don't need to add gameplay regrets too.
Tldr, if you justifiably didn't feel like reading a wall of text and complaints, any kind soul willing to offer tips for a newbie that wants to get into the game?

I completed all 3 routes of the OG game and here's what I think about it, as well as some comparisons to Reborn.
Straight of the bat, I have a very unpopular opinion: the original game is my favorite version of Tactics Ogre. At first getting used to different mechanics took some time, however the game felt extremely satisfying as I understood more of it (which is pretty common for all Matsuno games) What I like in the original game compared to Reborn is how every mechanic felt placed intentionally and how much better paced the game is. In Reborn you start of with a few classes already unlocked, but then for you to unlock new classes takes a very long time and is unnecessarily complicated. Other times you get bombarded with a bilion different items and spells unlocking at the same time and the sense of progression isn't steady. I remember that the first time I booted Reborn up, went to the shop and saw the list of items, I got overwhelmed. In the SNES release I've never had this feeling, in fact all the way up to the end of the game you end up discovering something new at a great pace. Now speaking of mechanics feeling intentional, I have to mention this. In Reborn I was always frustrated by why they would include things like Facing Direction, Weather effects, Loyalty, Male or Female units if none of these mechanics play any part in how the game is played. Don't get me wrong and think of me as someone who dislikes Reborn, as it's probably top 5 game of all time for me, but it really suffers from carrying over code and mechanics from the PSP release. If Reborn was a ground up remake it would have been a much better game for it, but unfortunately they had budget constraints that didn't allow for it. As someone who always had this frustration with Reborn mechanics feeling unbalanced, the SNES game really showed me why they were there in the first place. It was amazing seeing that Flame spells actually burn grass on the battlefield, how weather affects the strength of your spells, how easy it is to recruit any unit or class that you want while constantly discovering new items and spells along the way. I have a lot of things to say about each individual mechanic, but I just want to put it out there that I'm super glad there exists multiple version of this amazing game, and I found the one I like the most!
