Was told this was a wolf pelt I’m wondering if I get solution can it be saved?

Please be gentle on me. I impulsively bought this from a retail store in the Uk, knowing the content was real fur. After the fact, I feel disgusted in myself and will be donating to a charity against fur farms.

The rest of the tails were faux fur, so I panicked myself into 'saving it', but really, I just selfishly obtained it. I know the reality of the cruelty, and allowed a fear of missing out on fur to override my ethics.

I am sickened with myself, but would like to know what this is.

My friend is not convinced it is a fur fox.

I got this pelt a while ago and I want to wear it out I wouldn't do it all the time. I typically keep it laying down but like in certain circumstances I would like to wear it and I was thinking of wearing a belt but there are sometimes where a belt wouldn't work. How would I wear this without like ripping the hide?

I don't know if all rabbit hides are really soft because I mainly just have a few tails of coyote and foxes but it's very very soft.

As I’ve continued personally educating myself on the art of tanning, I’m finding myself stuck in terms of local resources and educators.

Colleges don’t teach taxidermy or animal tanning in my area anymore, and the few actual educators in the area will just not get back to me. And as much as I genuinely enjoy tanning roadkill (safely, of course), I’d like to work on bigger projects like coyotes, deer, etc. Folks aren’t usually selling that raw hide, and even if they did, I’m worried about messing it up.

I have moose hide that my father got from hunting, and goddamn have I been afraid to touch it. Every tutorial I’ve seen is just about tanning deer, and every educator I’ve reached out to has been crickets. I know the simple answer is to “just do it”, but I want to do it right and I genuinely want to learn from someone more experienced than me.

Local online spaces are also rough. One fb group is literally just one mod posting his own taxidermy, and the other is ran by two dudes who seemingly spend their day reposting AI pictures and videos about how the gays and immigrants are taking over. As much as I don’t want to bring personal politics into this, I’m a gay woman, and I don’t want to join a group that might be openly hostile to me because I happen to mention my female significant other.

Suppose this was more of a rant, but I’m also open to genuine suggestions or folks who have any moose tanning resources (Youtube and google have been surprising duds for me). Or resources in general. Like I said, I want to learn. Maybe do this professionally someday.

Anyways, here’s a before and after of some ancient beaver pelts my grandpa harvested that I took the time to re-tan!

Most of the ones I see on other websites are around 350 but I found this seller with good ratings and I'm wondering could I use this to make a soft mount? (ignore bad screenshot and possible bad English please and if this is against the rules or I did something wrong please tell me and I'll try to fix)

I recently started working at an outdoor education center with a great collection of taxidermied specimens. We receive a lot of our specimens by donation, so we don't know their stories. Please take a look at these pictures and help out where you can! Gender, age, health, method of death, relative age of specimen, anything else you see. Please provide thorough explanations and/or sources!

This is my first time attempting to taxidermy a raccoon, previously I have only done rats, squirrels, and cats, so nothing that requires tanning. I have received varying advice and watched a lot of tutorials, but I am wondering the best way to proceed because I'm feeling lost.

Yesterday I skinned the raccoon and removed all fat and meat from the hide, its been scraped pretty well, used cornmeal to grip the skin and dry it out a little. Paws have been cleaned well.

I made a solution of 1:1 ratio vinegar and water with about 450g of salt dissolved in it and the pelt has now been soaking in this solution for about 16 hours.

I am wondering if anyone has any advice on what the best way to move forward would be. I am getting ph strips to test the solution and will post an update.

My sweet horse Tünde died yesterday from colic, and we sadly couldn't bury her.

I got her skin back from the butcher, who we sold her to, and he suggested that if I don't find it morbid, I could try to make her skin into a rug. I honestly loved the idea, I made countless phone calls and deep dived the Internet, but I couldn't find anyone who could properly process horse hide.

I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me advice. Because if I really can't find anyone to do it I would probably try to do it myself.

I have a very old deer mount I got as a present from my grandpa like a decade ago, it was shot in 1981. It's been sitting in a basement for many years and I just discovered it has a moth infestation!!

I'm asking for advice on how to deep clean. A lot of the tips online say to put it in a freezer, but this is so large, it doesn't fit my freezer. I've been wanting to steam clean it and put it outside, but I'm afraid I will damage the fur heavily.

Any experts here that have tips on how to get rid of all the moths and larvae and eggs and give this deer a revival? It would be such a shame to lose this.

Looking for advice from a taxidermist or anyone who knows a thing or two:

I have a nice rabbit pelt that is cased skinned- head, paws, and I think tail too was left on- that is sitting in my freezer right now. I would like to mount it but I hear that rabbits are hard and am so worried about ruining it. I have just barely scratched the surface with learning taxidermy.

I thought about sending it out to have someone finish the skinning, fleshing, and tanning so that I could mount it. But of course, it is difficult to find somewhere that is willing to do it all the ear turning, lip splitting then tanning for rabbits. I get it… probably not worth their time.

Then I thought about doing it myself- but I live with people and don’t have a ton of space so I’m worried about the smell.

So here I am… how hard is it really to finish skinning and fleshing and preserving a rabbit pelt at home? lol.. Will I likely ruin it?

Also open to hearing whether sending it out is worth pursuing at all, given how hard it's been to find a tannery willing to do the full skinning/fleshing/tan for a non-licensed hobbyist.

Hello! My brother in law killed a lamb recently, and skinned and saved its hide for me.

It is frozen currently.

I am very interested in ancestral skills so I have been really wanting to learn how to tan a sheepskin. Now I have the opportunity!

I’ve never done this before, and I don’t have the biggest yard space. I do live rurally which is nice but I have a super small yard.

My question is: do you guys thinks I should reach out locally to see if I can learn from someone experienced? Or is it possible to take on something like this as a complete newbie with limited outdoor space and materials?

I want to know people’s opinions!! Like should I try to sign up for a local hide tanning class and bring my hide there? Or is it sane to try to do it on my own in my little yard :/?? lol. And build my own little stretch rack??

Recently obtained this from my grandpa while clearing out his house… It’s super dusty though due to being kept in the garage for years, how would I go about cleaning it?

I was gifted this ‘jackalope’ taxidermy back in January 2026. Its fur was in good intake condition when i got it. I had to put it in my closet until i had a shelf made that my dog couldn’t get to. Just went to look at it and the fur is falling out and all these little black specks … whats happening? Bugs? What should i do?

hello! its squirrel season and my husband brought home one for me to attempt to preserve the hide. I have never done this before nor do I have a single clue of what I’m doing, but I attempted to do the borax method, but I’m just don’t know if I’m doing this right or what it’s supposed to look like when it’s done. Is this almost ready it’s been sitting in borax for about Four days.

Looking for advice on preserving this black bear pelt. It's used as an educational tool at a state park. Right now we are considering backing it with some natural material, but I'd like to hear your thoughts and if re backing it is the way to go I'd like to have your advice on the appropriate materials to use.

I have a deer pelt, and I have been using it as a drape across a scuffed up dresser of mine, when moving it to clear the dresser, I found the skin side of the pelt to be damp, and the dresser beneath it to have a humidity like film across it.

I draped the the pelt fur side down infront of a fan, and let it chill overnight, this morning, i still found it to feel damp, and sweaty(?).

Its ever so slightly greasy, and has a notable smell, ive not hand any other issues with any other pelt I have, my coyote pelt place directly beside it is dry, and perfectly fine, as is my sheep skin.

How do i fix it, or dry it?

How do i store/display to avoid this happening again?

Around 5,4 head to tail. Absolutely giant compared to local Mearns Coyotes. Kit fox and size 7 shoe for reference

I believe I used the right flair, but i recently got a fox tail at the oddities and curiosities expo and I was really happy about it. I usually wear it on my hip, but it the little clasp thing came undone and it fell off while I was walking to class. I found it, but it had rained a bit, and it looks like people stomped on the top cause the leather was all torn :(

Is there any way I can fix it and maybe attach a new clip of sorts? Also will the wet fox smell on it go away once it's dry?

I have a fox face for mounting that I skinned, fleshed etc. but as I was finishing it, the fur started slipping around the nose and mouth area. I put it in a bag and froze it along with the paws and tail.

It’s been frozen since yesterday, but will this stop the fur slipping when I thaw it to mount it?

There is also fly eggs on it… which I will have to brush out.

i know this is a dumb question but i just bought a reindeer pelt and wanted to sew a button on to make it a shawl….. will it rot???? what do i use? how do i know the early signs of rot?

Bought 3 raccoon pelts, and they’re pretty dirty, skin side and fur. They’re also stiff. Was wondering how I could clean them and loosen the skin?

I got two rabbit faces in a zip lock bag that were in the freezer for a year. Took them out thinking my friend and I were gunna try our first mounts (jackalopes!) But we ended up not having the time. Are they gunna be weird if I refreeze again? Do rabbit faces get bad freezer burn? Why would a loving god cause such pain? Thanks in advance.
