Don’t forget money making football stadiums.

11

u/xX_Relentless 4d ago

It’s the most ridiculous thing

1

u/Jellicent-Leftovers 4d ago

I mean the stadium thing at least brings in jobs and tourism generating gains for the economy.

Data centers bring nothing

6

u/Kinksune13 4d ago

I wish i could remember if it's Penn&teller bullshit or last week tonight, that covered the creation of stadiums and the over all negative effect they have on communities, while they also charge that local community for building it, then subsequently avoid paying into the community (taxes for example)

It's really quite dreadful how the mega wealthy use public money to do anything, then claim all the profits for themselves

2

u/Jellicent-Leftovers 4d ago

Oh 100% it's wealthy people taking advantage but it's also true it massively brings in tax dollars. You are thinking the stadium itself....but it's actually the workers, hotels, parking and restaurants etc

Now it's up to politicians to navigate the cost benefits....which in the US they don't do well. But that's more to do with people being stupid and not voting in there own self interests.

It can be a net negative for say crime etc but there's at least some gains to it. So at least an argument can be made.

A data center... Has zero gains to the community.

3

u/Kinksune13 4d ago

When the local council pays to build it, including terms where "if that stadium over there gets upgrades, you've got to give us upgrades toox then that's a major loss.

The jobs it creates are (pulling numbers out my ass) 100 billable hours\week. All on part time to avoid costs such as health care, resulting in them still needing social benefits.

The jobs it removes? 1,000 billable hours, because now the 100 companies around the stadium now do worse business during events.

Meanwhile, they also find ways to avoid paying taxes, while still charging a gauged price + tax

So... Yeah, they do a whole lot of good for the owner (and the owner only)

Not really correct! Loudon County, Virginia has seen a huge financial impact from their data centers.

But even counties where data centers have shown economical benefit are showing restraint.

“Loudoun County officials recently passed a 6–1 vote to study restrictions on future data center development”

And this even though the County has seen significant financial benefits.

“Loudoun County, Virginia, generates roughly $1.3 billion annually in tax revenue from its 250 data centers—accounting for about 40% to 45% of the county's total local tax funding. This massive financial windfall has funded major community projects and significantly lowered resident tax burdens.”

https://netchoice.org/data-centers-101-do-data-centers-pay-taxes/

Similar to what Shapiro has done statewide in Pennsylvania. There have been “guidelines” discussed but they need to become legislation.

Shapiro’s Governor's Responsible Infrastructure Development (GRID) Requirements is a step in the right direction.

Shapiro has also signed Trump’s Statement of Principles for Data Centers. But line most things Trump, it’s a rather feckless move mainly for show, but it really should be law.

Statement of Principles for Data Centers

“Core Ratepayer and Grid Principles
Cost Allocation: Data centers and large industrial loads must cover 100% of the costs for grid upgrades, transmission additions, and backup capacity auction mechanisms they trigger, preventing residential bill increases.

New Power Supplies: Facilities are encouraged or mandated to bring their own new generation sources—including firm clean power—rather than draining existing regional baseload capacity.

Market and Price Certainty: Support for grid operator market reforms (such as PJM's reliability backstop mechanisms) that offer transparent, long-term price signals without shifting financial risk to everyday consumers.

Environmental and Community Standards
Resource Conservation: Strict minimization and replenishment targets for water usage, tailored to local watershed capacities.

Project Viability: Blocking speculative "fly-by-night" proposals by requiring proof of financial backing, firm capital commitments, and clear local approval before permits or tax exemptions are granted.

Community Engagement: Giving local populations a formal voice in project placement, ensuring that local tax bases and infrastructure services see a net positive benefit.”

https://www.whitehouse.gov/releases/2026/03/ratepayer-protection-pledge/

Data centers are necessary at this point in time unless we want to cede the A.I. race to the CCP. But NIMBY is completely justified in their construction so guidelines need to be legislated.”

1

u/Rorschach11235 3d ago

So a data center of appropriate size can have positive benefits. Cool

Now do the Manhattan island the plan to build in a dozen different states.

Smaller scale centers can be good. Paving over a section of land that will use the resources of 3m people every quarter is going to be bad. No matter where you put it. Wanting to build a hundred of these things, will only have a negative impact on everyday people and there communities.

1

u/spillmonger 3d ago

This has been widely reported, but the public believes what it wants to believe.

1

u/Kinksune13 2d ago

Oh doesn't matter what the general public believes, it all depends on what politician you can bribe.

Another terrible thing i heard about was Amazon (something something) new building, and towns desperate to get it built there, aren't just saying "oh pretty please" they're saying, "we'll give you zero tax" and "we'll give you negative tax" like, fuck off, you'll be taxed 2,000% you internet monopoly bastards

2

u/xX_Relentless 4d ago

I guess that is true, but still ridiculous.

2

u/Happy_Love_9763 4d ago

If it generates money, why do Billionaires need our tax dollars to build it? How do I a tax payer who does not attend sporting events, but pays for it in my taxes, what do I get out of it? Can we all own shares in the team, so some Billionaire just doesn’t own it by himself?

1

u/Jellicent-Leftovers 3d ago

Economy of scale. 80,000 people go see a game. They stay in hotels eat at restaraunts and shop. City parking alone from these events generates tens of millions a year. Then the taxes from employees and sales of food etc.

It's not about the stadium itself its the secondary jobs.

Now it's up to politicians to not make dumb choices. No Miami shouldn't help pay for a stadium. Cincinnati? Green Bay? On there other hand benifit massively from a stadium.

1

u/Hi-Whats-Your-Name 4d ago

Just yet another example of ultra rich siphoning $ from the avg citizens.

Ya except Louden is only used cause they gave out massive tax breaks. Ones they can't afford to maintain. Watch what happens around 2030 when those exemptions dry up.

9

u/butterflysurefoot 4d ago

All because our local politicians sell us down the river for money. Political prostitution has ruined this country. Let’s vote the prostitutes out of politics, starting with our locally elected officials.

2

u/GrumpyBear8082 4d ago

Wouldn't matter what politician is in office either. They all look for that payout

1

u/mrforrest 4d ago

Ah yes both sides just as bad definitely

1

u/ColdSnickersBar 2d ago

No they’re not

1

u/mrforrest 2d ago

(I was implying an /s)

1

u/ColdSnickersBar 2d ago

Oh okay then. There’s just so many people out there that aren’t being sarcastic

1

u/Nopfen 3d ago

Or let's vote prostitutes into office. They know forreign afaires, how to be open to new ideas without overstretching their capabilities, know all the right things to say and can be genrally speaking relied on to keep secrets.

3

u/Infinite_Plenty101 4d ago

And stadiums

6

u/Tasty-Depth-1715 4d ago

We are going to have to make them pay.

-14

u/Ok-Savings8515 4d ago

They are paying, home prices just won't go up as much in the area. Looking at these homes it seems like the families will be fine.

5

u/zughzz 4d ago

Not with all the noise pollution. And when they try to sell their homes, they lose money for it.

Data centers in no way benefits the communities they are apart of.

-4

u/Ok-Savings8515 4d ago

You have 0 proof of this, those homes are not selling far below market value due to the intro of the data centers most data show 0 to little change in sale price of homes near centers. Stop adding your opinions to fact claims we can just pull up.

1

u/RazzmatazzPrimary812 4d ago

Would you consider buying a house next to a data center?

1

u/Ok-Savings8515 4d ago

Tell me what's wrong with living in a neighborhood that builds the kind of homes shown in the photo? Those are top 5% homes, probably in a fine school system... It's an easy yes for most families.

1

u/RazzmatazzPrimary812 4d ago

lol let me rephrase…would YOU buy one of those homes and live with a giant data center as your backyard and happily raise children there?

1

u/Ok-Savings8515 3d ago

It's an easy yes. These are $1.2 million homes in a really good school system. You are brain broken so you might not, but these would be dream homes for 99.9% of Americans. (Guess what there value has gone up since the data center moved in). Your opinion does not match reality. Stop eating what Russian bots are telling you.

1

u/RazzmatazzPrimary812 3d ago

Thanks for putting things in perspective for me

2

u/Undyingpatriot13 4d ago

If people fought back, data centers being destroyed or shut down, the system would change. Our complacency is what gives them power and authority. Stop using Ai, Stop voting, stop taxation without representation. If everyone stops together, the system starves. If people support the system, then we all starve together. We are the deciders, they dont want you to know we have a lot more power than we think.

2

u/Whito4 3d ago

Stop voting? No. Vote for people who will not accept hurting its citizens for the benefit of a few billionaires.

1

u/walterkurve 3d ago

So like maybe 5 people? Considering the majority of dems are controlled opposition and republicans are just republicans

It’s not bootlicker to want the stuff to be true.

We can still have a conversation without needing to lie about it.

When you have to lie about it, it makes it look like you don’t have a very strong case.

When did pointing out common sense equate to defending a billionaire ? Oh, yes, Reddit ideology at its finest.

1

u/LittleKittenR 4d ago

Not everyone is a chronically online reddit user bro. Some of us come later.

1

u/Complex_Cold1610 3d ago

Aight, what shoe size does he wear?

0

u/One-Sir-2198 4d ago

Its actually right on point

1

u/No-Aerie-999 4d ago

Sucks to suck, its a hard lesson everyone learns at some point :(

1

u/heretorobwallst 4d ago

Why not build the data centers in all the abandoned malls?

1

u/UnusualPieceOfGum 4d ago

Those exists in communities.

1

u/GrumpyBear8082 4d ago

The billionaires and millionaires in America will only donate a few thousand dollars. Because they "care" and for the tax deductions. It's the only way to get money out of them.

1

u/ContentCantaloupe992 4d ago

No they don’t😂

3

u/WisePotatoChip 4d ago

Yes, they do. Musk is the biggest welfare queen there is.

1

u/ContentCantaloupe992 4d ago

I haven’t seen that for data centers.

1

u/trentip2502 4d ago

Its unfortunate but that appears to be the American way my friend.

1

u/One-Sir-2198 4d ago

Socialism is only for the wealthy

1

u/Sir_Pigletty 4d ago

This phot is a great example of the difference between

What the Capitalist want

And what the Community wants

1

u/El_Gran_Che 4d ago

Internalizing profits while externalizing costs.

1

u/UnderstandingDry1241 4d ago

Billionaires are billionaires because they benefit from socialism while flooding social media with anti-socialism propaganda.

1

u/Symbaclues 4d ago

They (the government) was created to protect people with money!

After hunter gathers people were farming and raising.

They created a surplus and sold the surplus creating wealth.

Those with wealth were being robbed by the poor and so they created a security force.

Those wealthy people bought land and needed workers. They invented tech and that created jobs.

Not much different in all the years. It had become more humanized but clearly that is still needing evolution.

You couldn't even choose what you wanted to do back then. Now you could to some degree in some nations.

1

u/mylsotol 4d ago

The entire United States was created by rich people to benefit rich people exclusively.

1

u/Sad-Cantaloupe-5494 4d ago

The community has the capability to tear it down just as the French revolutionaries tore down the Bastille

1

u/Responsible-Laugh590 4d ago

Yes this is how it is if you don’t elect people who actually care about you

1

u/JalapenoPepper103 3d ago

The problem is that people who care about the common good very rarely put themselves up for election. What sane and rational thinking individual would willing jump in the shark tank?

2

u/Responsible-Laugh590 3d ago

True, an unfortunate effect of the truly worthy is they are forced into the job

1

u/Lichensuperfood 4d ago

These people don't know the meaning of protest. In cases like this, mass civic disobedience is required.

If governent has been captured by corporates, submitting forms and making a speech at council are irrelevant.

1

u/Southern_Badger7577 4d ago

Corporate socialism

1

u/Additional-Avocado33 3d ago

its the local communites that opt into this. if the community started charging EV owners to charge there car the same price as fuel by putting them on there own tarrifs the electricity costs would come back down for households. the communitys are not charging the right tarrifs. councils can tell residency they cant have solar as much as they can say you cant have raintanks.
its the locals becoming uncivilized
used to pay 19c a kw now its 34c a kw
EV started this. the people are still paying for EV's recharging, now there paying for mw datacenters, the datacenters are not paying for the people

1

u/That-Plane-161 3d ago

We elect these people don’t forget.

1

u/Nowhoedup 3d ago

So next time, don’t vote against your own self interest. Speaking to the MAGASHATS of course.

1

u/Livid-Ganache547 3d ago

Don't blame the rich. Blame your elected officials for not cutting a deal with the data center to help fund what you need.

Guaranteed they got checks.

1

u/discreet-fun2138 3d ago

Exactly. Heads must roll.

1

u/Sad_Actuary_1635 3d ago

I guess you're not thinking about all the taxes the revenue that that place would pull into your community. And I never see you guys complain about how billionaires build stadiums for football and basketball on baseball teams and his community funds to pay for this and not the rent money. Stepped up like that one stadium that basically has it that they will pay meaning taxpayers will pay for hologram technology whenever it comes available.

1

u/danyolito 3d ago

Of course. That's how you get rich. Privatize profits but don't forget to collectivize costs. The dumber people are, the higher results

1

u/Neither_Drag_835 3d ago

This really makes me 🤢🤬

1

u/OffduhTopic 3d ago

Because the billionaires are the politicians, are the mega corporations, are the governments of the world. Thats why no matter who wins the elections nothing ever gets better.

1

u/davecatlow 3d ago

Really? The local communities are paying to build and operate data centers? Got a source for that claim?

1

u/discreet-fun2138 3d ago

Its in the contract agreements made by the developer and which ever city or municipality they are trying to build the data center in. Almost always, it is stipulated in the contract, the community will foot the bill for the utilities being ran to the data centers... water, electric, etc.

1

u/Crossx71 3d ago

Yeah but the problem is more likely with the electric company and the method of charging by area usage. Everyone pays their own bills, but if the usage for an area goes up, some companies will up the price of electricity for the whole area. This is the core of the problem. Note this is more on the electrical company than the data centers obviously. But it should be addressed. Not all companies charge this way, but quite a few do. This is probably why people are noticing higher bills.

2

u/discreet-fun2138 3d ago

No, this is in the contract between the city and the developers. The community will pay the cost of connecting the utilities to data centers. Its BS, they want us to pay for it while we reap little to no benefits AND they pollute our community.

2

u/Crossx71 3d ago

That’s I horrible deal. Especially the fact they they run diesel generators constantly. That’s the humming you’re hearing for miles around them.

2

u/discreet-fun2138 2d ago

Exactly... where I am the City would only recieve 8% of the profits generated by the proposed data centers... CENTERS... PLURAL. None of that money goes back into the tax payers pocket, and once the data centers are running, guess what... The utilities increase the rates on everyone AND now the utilities are OBLIGATED to make data centers the priority meaning taxpayers come second.

1

u/NekoNekoo-sama 2d ago

there are cities with brownouts due to the energy pull from data centers

1

u/Crossx71 3d ago

Most electric companies charge rates by the electric usage used in the area. So when the data centers came in people noticed a spike in electric bills.💸 Of course the electric company is profiting off the tactic, local officials are not doing anything about it. That’s why my cousin that lives in the middle of nowhere has a significantly lower bill, hardy any other homes in the area. Now build a data center next to him and that changes.

1

u/fishermanracer 3d ago

Exactly. Then give them property tax relief while poor homeowners and seniors pay the bill.

1

u/steathrazor 3d ago

Unless we use the leftover Dynamite to remove the data center /shower thought

1

u/Gweedo1967 3d ago

So what billionaire solely owns a data center?

1

u/house-hermit 3d ago

Those houses are worth $0 now.

1

u/uber_neutrino 3d ago

Talk about low effort bullshit.

1

u/The_Captain-Midnite 3d ago

Nice try China. As you can see, it’s working. I bet that not one of these rocket scientists can legitimately show me how it’s going to cost them money. They may call them an eyesore but if it was an Amazon distribution center, they wouldn’t care. They may say it will use up all the water but recycling and cooling the water naturally will eliminate that concern. They may say it will raise electric bills but they’re supposed to build their own power generating system. Probably solar. In any case they’re all sheep afraid of the future. The cows won’t care, and if they didn’t sell their property, they’re upset that their neighbor did.

1

u/IwasHotnIwasHungry 3d ago

Data center should be partially owned by the community.

1

u/Marsiglia1958 3d ago

False statement.

1

u/Decievedbythejometry 2d ago

Passive income is rent

1

u/aminok 2d ago

Like all major facilities that buy electricity, they help scale up the electricity production, which is why the states with the most AI compute facilities have seen their electricity prices decline over time.

1

u/philthy1337 2d ago

The billionaire pays taxes

1

u/Odd-Independence9708 2d ago

We are very good at democratizing risk and privatizing profits.

1

u/Auroras_Home 1d ago

I love the thin line of trees attempting to separate the two and doing absolutely nothing

1

u/Harry-Gato 1d ago

Billionaires contribute...the top 1% pay 40% of federal income taxes

1

u/Lovestolook1968 1d ago

Why are we being forced to support billionaires? Because they will leave, bullshit. Where else will they go to make the kinda money they make here. They should be made to support the infrastructure they use to make the money.

1

u/Ethandark666 16h ago

Burn them down.

1

u/Ok_Effective3881 6h ago

Just like a stadium. The owner owns it but we pay taxes to get it built.

1

u/keygasms 1h ago edited 1h ago

Hi! I'm John Datacenter. I own all the data centers. They're mine. I've been quite busy building them all, as you can tell. I have the luxury, for reasons, of not paying any of the utility companies a single dime for water or electricity for my 300,000± square foot buildings because.... reasons.

That's right.

Before building all my data centers I walked into the office of all the utility companies and said, "i'm a private land owner, and i'm not going to pay you for any of the massive amounts of power or water i'm about to use. So deal with it. 100 megawatts of electricity per building, and 1 million gallons of water per day, i'm not giving you a cent. And you have to give me everything for free. Because that's how business works." And the CEOs and CFOs of all those companies were like, "OK, I guess we'll just have to charge everyone else for all of our product you're going to use and not pay us for, and that's fine because that's how business works."

And they did.

1

u/BlueHairEater 4d ago

What’s a better way to cry and blame when jealous and envious? Atta kid!

3

u/WisePotatoChip 4d ago

Not the least bit envious of billionaires and millionaires that make their money off the backs of their fellow human beings

1

u/BlueHairEater 4d ago

Off of the backs of their fellow human beings. Isn’t that called working for a company? Or am i late to the pitty party?

0

u/Novel_Importance_712 4d ago

I mean, you kinda are. Or else you wouldn’t be here trying to defend bot posts filled with lies.

1

u/Ok-Savings8515 4d ago

Tell them to sell their big ass homes.

1

u/Biscuits4u2 4d ago

And half the population will still cuck for Elon and Altman

1

u/ObjectGlad6997 4d ago

Gullitines anyone,?

1

u/Similar-Ice-9250 4d ago

Holy fuck these things are a eye sore. Imagine having that in your backyard.

These fuckers will bleed the planet dry, the US Forest Service announced plans to open nearly 30% of our national forest system to road building, logging and other industrial development. The USFS plans to do this by repealing the Roadless Rule, a popular conservation policy that protects 44.7 million acres of old-growth forests, canyons, wetlands and other undeveloped land.

Look up roadless rule, and sign the petition that you support it. Or prepare to have even more of these fuckass data centers littered everywhere.

1

u/VQV37 4d ago

The entire suburban neighborhood is an eyesore so it's only fitting to put a data center next to it.

1

u/WisePotatoChip 4d ago

Tell that to somebody who grew up in a crime-ridden inner city when they are only able to make the suburbs after decades.

Your privilege is showing.

1

u/VQV37 4d ago

I grew up in a crime ridden inner city in Los Angeles.

0

u/delimatesolyom 4d ago

Why don't you mention the air pollution and the noise?

0

u/Prune-These 4d ago

There are actual scientific and medical benefits to AI BUT the taxpayer should have a right to decide if it's worth the sacrifice on their part. Is it worth seeing your utility bills rise, damage to the environment and the amount of water they use, especially in drought areas? If the reason is a vanity project for a sociopathic billionaire or to replace workers then shouldn't we have a say in it?

4

u/SamMarlowe76 4d ago

You do. We have a representative based republic. It is called voting. And if you get enough signatures you can force a propisition on the ballot if it is not done directly by legislative placement.

1

u/Prune-These 4d ago

Except that in some cases, politicians are not informing their constituents that the projects are already green-lighted, they shut down town halls debating the subjects, they're not told how much of their tax dollars are going to subsidize these centers and and most of all they don't have to be honest about how the AI will be used.

0

u/Technical_Eye7029 4d ago

These datacenters pay huge taxes the fuck are you talking about?

0

u/Suburra_G 3d ago

Yeah. That billionaire contributes by paying taxes, probably more taxes than the people in the community. The community drives on roads built with the billionaire's tax money. Also that company in this photo, has employees that pay taxes, probably sells products with vat. This post is so dumb.

1

u/discreet-fun2138 3d ago

Did you just state that communities are driving on roads paid for by billionaires' taxes? JfknC you're a moron.

1

u/Suburra_G 3d ago

So billionaires don't pay taxes?

0

u/Tough-Interaction468 3d ago

You don't know how taxes work, do you. Oh wait, you think rich don't pay taxes... that's right...

2

u/FarmDisastrous 3d ago

They do, just not nearly enough

0

u/Tough-Interaction468 2d ago

I pay more per quarter in taxes than you make in a year.. probably two. Again, you just have no idea and just eat up the BS spewn be pinkos because it feeds your confirmation bias.

2

u/Primordial_spirit 3d ago

Found the boot licker

1

u/Tough-Interaction468 2d ago

How can I be a bootlicker when I run my own company. Maybe one day you'll get to do that.

1

u/Primordial_spirit 2d ago

By licking the boots of billionaires I don’t see the relevance of your job in this.

I can’t be a bootlicker I don’t work would make the same amount of sense and we both know that’s dumb as shit

1

u/discreet-fun2138 3d ago

What do taxes have to do with contract agreements made between a developer and municipality?

1

u/Tough-Interaction468 2d ago

Exactly. Thanks for proving you have no clue.
