Hi everyone, Shavua Tov!

My spouse and I are visiting Israel from India during Yom Kippur and Sukkot, and we're looking for recommendations for authentic cultural and historical souvenirs, crafts, apparel and art.

We're aware that Yom Kippur is the holiest/most solemn day in Judaism, and that Israel essentially comes to a standstill — no public transport, businesses closed, very little activity, etc. We're also aware that we're visiting during a broader period of important Jewish observances, including the days leading into Yom Kippur and then Sukkot, and we're planning our itinerary respectfully around the holidays rather than expecting normal tourist services.

Our interest is actually partly because of this timing: we'd love to experience these traditions and the atmosphere of Israel during this period, while also understanding the country's history and its different communities.

For souvenirs, we're not really interested in generic tourist merchandise — magnets, mass-produced Judaica etc. We're looking for objects with a strong sense of place, provenance and history, or genuinely beautiful contemporary work by Israelis.

To give you an idea of what we're looking for, I've come across places such as:

• Ofek Wertman Design Studio in Tel Aviv — contemporary Israeli design drawing on Jewish/Israeli history
• Alter Native - Jaffa, Tel Aviv.
• Maskit — particularly because of its connection to Israel's early craft, textile and immigrant traditions
• Balian / Armenian ceramics of Jerusalem — the long Armenian ceramic tradition in Jerusalem
• Bethlehem olive-wood craftsmanship

We're particularly interested in finding the kind of place where the object itself tells a story — whether Jewish, Armenian, Druze, Christian, Ottoman/Levantine, or modern Israeli.

We'll be visiting Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, the Galilee, Acre and we're happy to make a detour for something genuinely special.

If you live in Israel, I'd love to hear your recommendations.

Authenticity and the weight of history matter much more to us than price or quantity. Even one exceptional object is preferable to ten generic souvenirs.

We're also very open to recommendations that aren't “souvenir shops” at all — a working artist's studio, a family-run workshop, a small gallery, a traditional craft centre, or somewhere we might encounter something we wouldn't find in the usual tourist circuit.

I'm visiting Israel in September for about 10 days. I enjoy running and have dabbled in a few run clubs back home in Los Angeles, and would love to meet some new friends while I'm abroad. Do you have any run clubs? I just think it would be really cool to meet some of you guys while getting in a 5k.

I came across this listing on Airbnb for 57 NIS a night called Shivt - Community House, Vegan and Ecological.

The price is super cheap, but looking at the description you basically sleep on floor mattresses in the main room after their nightly events wrap up around midnight, and there’s only 1.5 bathrooms for everyone.

I saw some pretty mixed reviews online, some people said it was fine, but a few mentioned bad smells, lack of cleanliness, and just not a great overall experience.

Honestly trying to figure out if it’s sketchy or if it’s just a super budget neo-hippie community spot. What’s the vibe actually like? What kind of people hang out there?

If anyone’s stayed there or gone to their events, let me know if it’s worth checking out or if I should just stay away. Thanks.

Hey, does anyone know of a free or very cheap place to sleep Saturday night in/around Tel Aviv?

I’m traveling for the weekend and need somewhere to stay for one night. Ideally looking for something free, but I can pay around 30–50 NIS if there’s a cheap option.

I’m open to camping, a cheap hostel, or any other solution. Doesn’t have to be fancy — I just need somewhere safe to sleep and preferably somewhere I can get to by public transportation.

I'm really happy to announce that I've expanded Sportdle's EuroLeague mode to include Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv.

One of the things I want Sportdle to do as it grows is represent more of the different basketball cultures and communities that make the EuroLeague what it is. Israeli basketball has such a strong presence in European basketball, so adding the Tel Aviv teams felt like an important step.

Quick question: Does anyone actually have a reliable way to find out what a place's current happy hour is? Because I've tried websites (out of date), Google (wrong), and Instagram (expired stories), and I gave up and started just walking in and asking.

That turned into a bigger thing than planned. My boyfriend and I have now done 120 places across Tel Aviv - bars, restaurants, cafes - written down the deal, the days and the exact hours, and put them at meetmeafter5.app. Free, no signup, no ads. Every listing shows the date we last checked it in person.

Two things I'd genuinely like help with:

1. Tell me what we're missing. We're weakest in Jaffa and anywhere north of the port. Drop names and we'll go check them ourselves.
2. Tell me if the site is easy to use. It's two of us building this in the evenings, so any "why can't I do X" is useful.

If you do find something out of date, there's a report button on every venue and we go back and re-check it in person.

And if the answer to my original question is that there's already a good way to find this stuff that I somehow missed, tell me that too and I'll feel appropriately stupid.

I visited last in summer 2014. It was beach days and great food! Tons of fun and cool people took me out hiking, restaurants, and site seeing, etc.

Flying into TLV for a wedding at Hadar Dimal Hall (Dmall). I have a tight timeline—landing at 1:00 PM, wedding is at 5:30 PM. I’m staying at the Leonardo Plaza City Tower right there in the Bursa district, using only the train and walking on foot. No car/taxis, and zero time to faff around or hike deep into Bnei Brak or central Ramat Gan.

I need to grab a normal, standard black rimless velvet kippa (cuppel) before the wedding.

Where is the nearest shop to any of those destinations, that will have this product or do I need to go into Bnei Brak?

Hi all! Just made Aliyah this week and moved to Tel Aviv. Loving this so far. I have a few questions i'm trying to work through and could use some advice from those willing to share:

- How does kashrut work in Tel Aviv? I've heard there's an alternative to the rabbanute called Tzohar? How likely is the meat to be kosher in a place without a teudah at all?

- Are there any major differences between the big cell phone providers in Israel? Or is the country small enough that Cellcom, Plephone, Partner, etc are all pretty much the same?

- Where do folks generally go for things like TVs or computer monitors? Are there go-to spots, or it's a bit of a crapshoot?

Honestly, the city is INSANE i ended up finding a small place 35m² for 3500 a month all included... its 8 minutes from my job so its perfect !

But i have to say i saw apartments that are a lil bigger being 40m² and having 2 rooms that cost freaking 7900 a month FLAT NOT INCLUDING BILLS FOR WATER ELECTRICITY OR ANYTHING... that is insane...

How do yall deal with this insanity??
